So my first baby is due in a few weeks. I am about to book in for a pre birth hollywood wax Shock but i also planned on having a pedicure and manicure just to feel nice. Everyone is saying ooh no i wouldn't in case you need an emergency c-section! They'll literally stand over you and make you take all the nail polish off before theatre?! Is that true?! I planned on having shellac on fingers and toes which i couldn't get off even if they stood over me so what should i do? I am not hugely vain etc i just wanted to feel nice before going through child birth. AIBU?

Lol my consultant admired my pedi! Do it! 😂

bumsexatthebingo · 27/02/2017 21:16

Just get your toes done. I wouldn't fancy shellac on 9 fingers tbh.

Happyandhungry · 27/02/2017 21:20

Right I am going to do nail polish on toes so i dont have to think about soaking my toes shellac off after baby comes. But i am going to do shellac on fingers as they'll last and easy to soak off a few weeks later. Loving life thanks everyone for answered my non baby related birth question!!

I remember them taking mine off when I had an emergency section. Nearly 11 years ago

WTFRUon · 27/02/2017 21:35

FYI for some strange reason my body is hypersensitive to waxing while pregnant. I got a Hollywood before and had to sit on peas !!! I have always waxed and after pregnancy went back to normal !

ButtonMooooon · 27/02/2017 21:37

I had a planned C section and was told at the pre op no nail varnish, make up, contact lenses. As if I didn't look bad enough being sleep deprived Grin

AmaDablam · 27/02/2017 21:41

I had a normal birth but then had to have a repair in theatre with a spinal block and they did remove my toenail polish (not professionally applied in my case - I'd somehow managed to contort myself to reach them the previous week) so it does happen, dependent on hospital policy I guess and whether it's an emergency situation. Didn't really bother me though as, well, I kind of had other stuff on my mind by that point!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/02/2017 21:42

That wax is going to hurt like hell! The regrowth won't be pleasant either!

MuncheysMummy · 27/02/2017 21:43

It's total bollcoks these days there s no issue with having shellac or acrylic or gel nails and toes for CS the use your ear lobe sif nessesaty but they mostly work ok through the nails anyway.

missm0use · 27/02/2017 21:45

Get it done! Feel all nice and lovely! Hospitals have nail varnish remover! I know as I had my nails painted before I went to have DD and they took it off one nails for a monitor!

Ps tell your friends to stop putting the fear into you - they should be cheering you on for an uncomplicated birth and not filling your head to be preparing for the worst case!

Rainshowers · 27/02/2017 21:49

I definitely had shellac on my fingers, I can see it in the pics as it had started growing out but I was scared to book an appointment as thought it'd jinx me into going into labour!

TizzyDongue · 27/02/2017 21:50

Despite it being over 13 years ago I distinctly recollect the midwife running by my trolley (had a real drama llama c-section) asking if I had nail vanish on (I didn't) but she said 'good' and possibly something about saving her removing it - or possibly that she'd have had to remove it anyway. That bits vaugue but I clearly recall being asked as I was very 'huh odd time to talk about nail varnish'

WTFRUon · 27/02/2017 21:50

How about get them done except the index finger which is the only one they need? Isn't it (cool) to have an accent finger nail anyway? ( I think it's supposed to be your ring finger but you can set s new trend!)

m0therofdragons · 27/02/2017 21:51

We have nail varnish at the hospital and it's removed even for emergency ops like a csections. A nurse or health care assistant (or midwife) removes a finger and a toe from each hand and foot.

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 28/02/2017 11:52

It's not an urban myth, they took my nail varnish off when I went to theatre for an EMCS

Heychickadee · 28/02/2017 13:06

It's on the "checklist" that you shouldn't have nail varnish on if you're coming to theatre, but if someone's crashing through the door it's the least of our priorities. Can put a sats probe on the earlobe or sometimes even sideways on your finger.

AnoiseAnnoysanOyster · 28/02/2017 13:11

I'm a nurse and nail varnish is on the pre op checklist for a GA.

witsender · 28/02/2017 13:16

Waxing really fucking hurts when pregnant!

DrinksFewAndPeopleMany · 28/02/2017 14:04

Need to have a fingernail/toenail clear. No guarantee that an ear probe would be available, they are like gold dust where I work.

Some sats probes don't reach the feet. I wouldn't do shellac. You won't care about your nails with newborn exhaustion!

RosieThorn · 28/02/2017 14:37

There are signs up all over the maternity wing of our local hospital discouraging shaving or waxing prior to giving birth as it increases the chances of infection apparently.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 28/02/2017 14:52

WTAF are you getting a wax?! I can understand the nails as I like to have nice nails but waxing my fanny?

I promise you it's only you that cares about that.

Get a nice manicure but just clear or no polish.

BeyondUnderthinking · 28/02/2017 14:59

I was rushed into a&e after knocking myself out with a fall when I had acrylic nails on. They put the pulse oximeter on my finger sideways and got a reading that way.

So it's not that important, but it probably is best to not have it done anyway, as it would be easier

silkybear · 28/02/2017 15:51

Am I the only one who went into labour with a gloriously large 70s bush? I'm usually nicely maintained but after 41 and a half weeks of pregnancy fucks were no longer given :)

TizzyDongue · 28/02/2017 15:55

Nope silkybear you weren't.
