Pancakes for tea - AIBU or DH?!

It's Pancake Day on Tuesday! Bloody love Pancake Day.
Although, who's BU?
I think stacks of pancakes for tea on Pancake Day (dinner to the Southerner lot) with loads of different toppings, fruit and fillings is perfectly adequate.
DH thinks that's not a substantial tea, and they're perfectly good as a starter but it's not a main meal for the kids.
Am I unreasonable to think "Shurrup, it's Pancake Day!" and continue to fill us all with pancakes or do you do something else as well?

my DD loves pancakes,, I've agreed to let her have pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner for pancake day. We are going to do different kinds though. I'm looking forward to it and DH is too, DD is beside herself with excitement.

Hungarians do a good pancake. Savoury favourite is meat filled with a tomato sauce and lots of sour cream en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hortob%C3%A1gyi_palacsinta

And for dessert fillings apricot jam; sweetened cottage cheese with raisins or the Gundel pancake which is full of walnuts and chocolate en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundel_pancake

I do love Austrian pancake soup (strips of pancake in meat broth).

Will probably make at least some pancakes for tea, but as I could easily eat a dozen, not enough for everyone to have just pancakes. Unless I bought a packet ready-made...

April Are you tilting the pan all round as soon as you pour the batter in? I had friends who couldnt cook pancakes, made sensible batter, and were shocked when I grabbed the pan after they put batter in, tipped half of it out, tilted all round and produced a respectable pancake. Never occured to them why pancakes are thin...

RedBugMug · 27/02/2017 13:52

the austrians also make 'kaiserschmarrn' which is fluffy with raisins (like an exploded sufflee) and 'apfelschober' which is like a spanish omlette with very little flour and apple slices.

I'm a nanny whose worked for said family for 9 years and has never felt comfortable giving them just the pancakes for tea but this year I'm going for it! They can have fruit and some salad veggies seperate and then just stacks of pancakes. They've complained the past they're too full to enjoy them after dinner.

They all have a cooked lunch at school so what's the problem? Grin

Pancakes for supper is perfectly fine. Get some savoury options as well. you can buy a aromatic duck from the super market and shred the meat for duck and pancakes with spring onions and cucumber and sauce. then have the option for fruit and syrup and chocolate as well as lemon and sugar.

Perfectly balanced meal imo. even without the effort of the veg. can't wait for my own pancake dinner for one tomorrow.

Also pancakes are perfect when there's very little in the cupboard. :S

superfringe · 27/02/2017 14:17

We have savoury pancakes first (cheese and ham or tuna and sweetcorn are nice), followed by sweet ones for pudding.

I'm going to attempt buttermilk pancakes with banana, strawberry and maple syrup for the sweet ones this year :)

Pancakes for dessert here. Yummy with lemon and sugar on.

Chocolate spread and banana is a good dessert when I am at the coast or a fun fair.

Adarajames · 27/02/2017 16:22

What is this banoffee spread of which you speak, Adarajames? It sounds like a must have for my shopping list!

Dumdedumdedum · 27/02/2017 17:21

Ooh, just googled it, how can it be banoffee spread without a hint of coffee in it?

Fadingmemory · 27/02/2017 17:21

Sounds perfect. If he would like more I would suggest he cooks it...

Booshbeesh · 27/02/2017 17:23

Why not with them do something like cocktail sausages, maybe some vegetables or tomatoes and cucmber sticks? Like sausage rolls scotch eggs etc... we have ours with lemon and sugar so i make a point of getting up early and have them for breakfast with tons of fruit. And then the same for desert after dinner... nomnomnom.

yummycake123 · 27/02/2017 17:28

YANBU! We do the same: lots of pancakes with a variety of toppings. It's fun and delicious!

Dumdedumdedum · 27/02/2017 17:34

And to merge with the lifeskills thread, making pancakes is something you can have fun doing with your children so that at least they'll have one thing in their cookery repertoire when they leave home (same batter for toad in the hole and Yorkshires, so win win!).

sashh · 27/02/2017 17:57

I make pancakes quite a lot, but I was brought up that they were savery, we used to pour lamb broth over them.

Fill with cheese / mushrooms / tomatoes for an acceptable to DH meal and then carry on with sweet and fruit fillings.

Adarajames · 27/02/2017 18:07

Dumdedumdedum coffee???!!! In banoffee??!!! You wrong wrong women, get they back to satan!!

Ifailed · 27/02/2017 18:10

Complete with homemade strawberry sauce and fresh strawberries and lots of other yummy fruits.

I take it you live in the southern hemisphere - does it feel odd having Easter in the autumn?

glitterazi · 27/02/2017 18:11

Banoffee is a mixture of banana and toffee, surely?! Not coffee Grin
Banana and coffee would be all manner of rank

Nah, pancakes are pudding, not main, even on Shrove Tuesday.

I'll do a proper well balanced meal, maybe slightly smaller than usual, and make the pancakes after.

DC's will be having ice cream sauces, sugar & lemon, golden syrup or honey as their toppings and I'll probably have ice cream, banana and toffee sauce. It may be only once a year then there is no way I'm feeding my family an entire meal which really only serves as a vehicle for sugar!

So IMO YABU and your DH is spot on Grin

S1lentAllTheseYears · 27/02/2017 18:52

I think pancakes are perfectly fine on their own and making them is enough effort without cooking something else as well. I bloody hate cooking though so that my influence my feelings on the matter!

DH thinks they are a pudding so he will make stick a readymeal in for himself beforehand - fine by me!

DC are teens so have the choice to do themselves something if they want but I can guaruntee they won't bother!

capricorn12 · 27/02/2017 19:00

Kids will probably have pancakes as pudding with nutella or golden syrup but DH and I will have my signature savory pancakes with prawns in a cream and white wine sauce. It's the only time I ever make it tbh but I don't know why as it's yummy.

Dumdedumdedum · 27/02/2017 19:21

To all you naysayers - Banoffee Pie = Bananas, Toffee and Coffee - see the original recipe from The Hungry Monk!

Whatsername17 · 27/02/2017 20:21

My dh agrees with yours. I agree with you. Tomorrow we are having a 'picky tea' and pancakes with Nutella, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries for pudding. That way dh can fill his boots and I can eat pancakes. Grin
