AIBU re alcohol

My DH has drank 3 pints of lager and large red wine tonight. I think this is a lot considering the kids were up and I wasn't drinking. We had been driving last night. AIBU in thinking it's a lot?

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 26/02/2017 07:05

What do you mean about the kids? Is he visibly drunk in front of them? If so, not good.
Is he going to sleep to heavily to get up to them in the night? Only a problem if it's his turn.

Trainspotting1984 · 26/02/2017 07:07

It's not a lot almostajillsandwich

Weatherforecaster · 26/02/2017 07:12

Trainspotting. It would over the reccomended amount if he'd done the same the night before so it is a lot. It's around 12 units and she said he'd also drank on the Friday. Reccomended for men not to go above 21 units. If it was a one off the poster wouldn't have bothered posting surely so it seems it's a regular thing. Alcohol habits in this country are extraordinary. It's like it somehow doesn't count if it's the weekend!

macaronip1e · 26/02/2017 07:21

WeatherForecaster Guidelines have now changed to 14 units/week for men and women, I think.

As a one off or weekly occurrence this wouldn't bother my. If it were every or every other day it would.

Trainspotting1984 · 26/02/2017 07:23

Recommended units are about health (and are famously unreliable) they have nothing to do with whether it's "a lot"

Weatherforecaster · 26/02/2017 07:31

Trainspotting - Best just ignore their advice then. Only important whether it's perceived as a lot. Health doesn't matter after all. It IS a lot. 4 drinks after drinking the night before IS a lot. You might not want to see it but ...

Weatherforecaster · 26/02/2017 07:35

It would also be nearly 1000 calories.

Thefitfatty · 26/02/2017 07:36

Like many threads about alcohol on MN this will dissolve into various teetotalers clutching their pearls and screaming that a glass of wine a night is overdoing it and going to lead to cirrhosis.

Op, IMHO it's not a lot, unless he's doing it every night (even then....) or effects his behavior negatively.

I'm not teetotal. I just don't have the 'it's Saturday so I can overdo my limit and it won't count' attitude.

Thefitfatty · 26/02/2017 07:42

I just don't have the 'it's Saturday so I can overdo my limit and it won't count' attitude.

That's fine. However you have to appreciate that many people look forward to a few drinks on a Saturday after a long week and don't give a fig about the calories.

Imamouseduh · 26/02/2017 07:42

And? So what if your kids are up? Seeing your parents responsibly consume alcohol is an important part of growing up to have a good relationship with alcohol yourself.

CantChoose · 26/02/2017 07:42

Recommended units are pretty arbitrary. There is no proven 'safe' amount of alcohol.
That said, the amounts stated, while not ideal, are not out of the ordinary.
I suspect there may be some backstory too.
if only people got as outraged about their DH eating too many chips. Obesity, diet and inactivity causes many, many more problems in the uk than alcohol. From the journal of public health: "In 2006–07, poor diet-related ill health cost the NHS in the UK £5.8 billion. The cost of physical inactivity was £0.9 billion. Smoking cost was £3.3 billion, alcohol cost £3.3 billion, overweight and obesity cost £5.1 billion"

Trainspotting1984 · 26/02/2017 07:43

My limit 😭 You're hilarious. Lots of people enjoy alcohol as part of their lives

Trifleorbust · 26/02/2017 07:53

He drank 9 units in one sitting. Not responsible drinking (not that I am judging). A woman says she drinks a whole bottle of wine occasionally and she is suddenly a lush on MN. A man is described as drinking the same amount and it is 'responsible' - interesting!

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 26/02/2017 07:54

It is a lot. Each pint is a couple of units. A glass of wine can be 1-3 units depending on strength and size. That could easily reach 9 units which is could be affecting your ability to drive under the limit in the morning.

If that's regular with frequent drinking through the week, then it is damaging to health, including the liver and waistline. If it's a random occurrence, little concern.

What effect does it have on him? I'm assuming that you're not comfortable because you've posted about it. The effects include his behaviour at the time, hangovers, things like snoring.

I'm not teetotal. I sporadically have a drink at home. More if out for a special occasion. Alcohol has a place, but not if it's compromising health or family life.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/02/2017 07:57

I think it's fine.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 26/02/2017 08:00

You're looking for a reason to be annoyed with him.
That's totally normal imo. It's not much in the grand scheme of things.

Gamtanner · 26/02/2017 08:02

It's a lot.

NataliaOsipova · 26/02/2017 08:02

I'd be under the table with that amount....and it'd be a heavy night for my DH. But - if he wasn't driving - it doesn't seem particularly noteworthy or excessive to me over the course of a Saturday evening.

Hyperhypermum · 26/02/2017 08:03

I always enjoy a few drinks on Friday & Saturday nights and so does DH if not working next day. We rarely drink midweek. On Friday I drank a bottle of wine, DH had none. Last night DH had 2 beers and a glass and a bit of wine. I drank the rest of the wine. A normal Saturday night. The kids were around.

Sounds fine to me, unless of course he does it every night.

SallyGinnamon · 26/02/2017 08:06

I don't think it's a lot, even if he did drink on Friday. And as you're commenting it must be unusual for him so unlikely to be a killer.

engineersthumb · 26/02/2017 08:07

That's much more than I would drink normally. Even on a night out in wouldn't manage that (not that nights out happen much!). Doesn't drinking like that make you very lethargic around kids?

Hannahbanana1725 · 26/02/2017 08:08

YABU. It's not a lot, sounds like you're just looking for something to moan about.
So what your kids were up?? Unless he turns into an abusive twat when he's drinking, I see no problem with it.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 26/02/2017 08:08

I used to be a problem drinker, currently teetotal and very much enjoying it.

I don't think 3 lagers and a glass of wine is something to worry about. If it was a nightly thing my radar might ping a bit.
