To actually use my debit card?

Barclays Bank has been "down" since 2pm. I discovered this whilst sat with DC in a restaurant trying to pay for the lunch we'd just eaten. No cash on me, even cash machine not working. Cue a very awkward and cringe chat with the manager trying to explain to them that I did have funds to pay (desperately showing them my bank account online to prove it) and ended up with me leaving my address and ID and assuring them I'd come back to pay tomorrow.

Then I had to attempt to leave the multi story carpark with £5 in cash and a £6 ticket cost......

Happy Saturday to all Barclays customers!

Huh? I've been using my barclays debit card all day no issue. That is super embarrassing though! Barclays once or twice cancelled my card without warning - that was awkward when I had a huge trolley load of shopping to pay for.

EssentialHummus · 25/02/2017 19:48

Oh gosh that's one of my nightmares. Is their whole network down?

Crunchymum · 25/02/2017 19:49

What time was this? I paid with my debit card in a few places about 5.30pm

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2017 19:49

DS2 rang me from town to say his card wasn't working. He couldn't get cash out or buy anything. Sad

GoodJobSweetie · 25/02/2017 19:49

I've used mine today also with no issue.

Whole network is down- has been since 2pm. Both debit and credit card transactions are not being authorised and I couldn't even withdraw cash. Not fraud- which was my first thought. Twitter is awash with very, very angry people!

Am sure the manager of the restaurant thought I was pulling a fast one- it was over £50 too but I showed him my online banking and tried to reassure him I wasn't trying to do him out of 4 Margarita pizzas.....

At the supermarket self checkout the lady next to me had her card refused by the machine. I tried to pay 30 seconds later and my first attempt was refused too. Both cards were Barclay. I suggested at the time that there might have been a problem with Barclays.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2017 19:53

DS2 came home on the train (fortunately he had £3 cash for train fare) very hungry and really disappointed. He had got as far as the counter to buy food then couldn't have it.

He's 15 so not little but did feel sorry for him.

PuraVida · 25/02/2017 19:53

Mines been working today Confused

Dailymaildailyfail · 25/02/2017 19:54

Out of interest- those who's cards have been working, where in the world are you?

I'd be mortified. It happens though!

elvisola · 25/02/2017 19:59

Mine didn't work at 4pm when I was trying to buy lunch, then randomly worked 10 minutes later for a £5 transaction and then was declined again at 4.45 in M&S when DH was trying to buy a suit he HAS to have for a conference he's flying to tonight.

No cash on us, luckily a link machine gave me £100 and I could still access online banking.

I was furious thinking the cards had been blocked and spent 40 minutes on hold waiting to get through to them. I gave up.

Luckily in both cases DH had his credit card.

This was in Watford.

Dailymaildailyfail · 25/02/2017 19:59

I was so mortified. We were in a snooty part of town and I was on my own with the three of them and the looks I got from the yummy mummies with their husbands was pretty special. Especially when DS2 asked if he could take the rest of his pizza home in a takeaway box Grin

Eek! As someone who hardly ever carries cash, this happening does worry me.

However, I have used my Barclays debit card today with no issues. I'm in Cambridgeshire.

karalime · 25/02/2017 20:02

I'm with Barclays. I was out shopping today and had my card declined in m&s, luckily I had some cash but when I went to the atm I couldn't get any cash or see my balance.

It had worked in the previous 2 shops so I just assumed I'd done a bit too much shopping and had my card blocked!

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2017 20:02

DS2 thought it meant he had no money to begin with. Sad

MetalLaLa · 25/02/2017 20:04

I had no problems using my Barclays debit card today, however I did notice that a cash machine transaction took over two hours to appear on my banking and reduce my available balance, so may be worth bearing in mind if it's related.

Huldra · 25/02/2017 20:04

Ah! That explains it I thought my card had been blocked this afternoon.

Algebraic · 25/02/2017 20:07

No problem with mine in Bristol. Used it at 5pm.

SquinkiesRule · 25/02/2017 20:10

I used my Barclays debit card after 2pm today too, in Wales.

bigearsthethird · 25/02/2017 20:12

Mine was refused today in supermarket but them went through when tried again, this would have been about 3pm. Cashier said it had been happening a lot today
