They're painful to read, CaveMum.Grin

But it's a good source for transcripts of 45's output, Pence's output and the different types of press briefings.

This is a really good article on different methods of spreading propaganda and how they can be countered. I would recommend!
Defense Against the Dark Arts: Networked Propaganda and Counter-Propaganda
jonathanstray.com/networked-propaganda-and-counter-propaganda

He discusses 3 main types of propaganda used in different countries:

  • Russia and the spread of misinformation through multiple sources - countered by getting in first basically. You have to get the facts and the alternative view point in front of people before the misinformation comes out. Once people hear a lie it is incredibly hard to convince them of the fact
  • China and cheerleading to drown out negative news (otherwise known as 'oh look! It's a kitten in a boot!') - counter by being loud and visible.
  • America and the spreading of ideas through manufacturing offense (or the Milo Yiannopoulos effect) - counter by checking the sources and asking who benefits from the offensive outcry. Starve them from publicity.

The real challenge I see here is identifying the tactic being used and using the most effective counter strategy. I think some basic rules can be used though:

  • report and share events quickly before the lies get out
  • continue to be physically present at protests. It is harder to ignore and drown out.
  • think before reacting to outrageous statements and stories. Check where they have come from and who benefits from the noise they make.

I think this was first published in December. Seems pretty relevant right now.

thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/321138-two-progressive-activists-were-behind-trump-russian-flag-prank

"A progressive group called Americans Take Action was reportedly behind the Russian flags emblazoned with the word "Trump" that appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) during the president's speech Friday.

CPAC workers quickly collecting the flags from attendees waving them in the audience.

According to a report by Talking Points Memo, two young progressive activists from D.C., Jason Charter and Ryan Clayton with the group Americans Take Action, purchased tickets to the conference and handed out the nearly 1,000 flags to attendees as a prank.

Charter, 22, told TPM the prank was meant to mock Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that most people didn't seem to realize the red, white and blue flag was Russian.

"I asked people if they wanted a Trump flag and they took it," Charter said. "Many Trump supporters were proudly waving their Russian Trump flag."

"I think it says a lot about Donald Trump's base and their education level," he told TPM. "I don't want to insult anyone, but I think you should know what the Russian flag is. They are one of the world's major powers, and it's a pretty easily recognized flag."

The group, Americans Take Action, describes itself on its website as "a network of populists who believe that the American government should represent we the people once again, that the economy should work for all of us, and that the internet should remain free and open for generations to come.""

The obsessions with comparing to Obama or sniping at Clinton are odd, too.
Er, Hello Mr T? You Won. The campaign for votes and popular approval is over for now.

I'm afraid the campaign can't end, lljkk. They need an 'enemy' and a 'goal' to keep people motivated and 'unthinking'.

This tweet from the fox news anchor mentioned in the above article. Seems like Fox could be declared FAKE News any day now Grin

It demonstrates the divisions in the Conservative camp right enough.

Definitely.

Thanks for the 'catchup' all. I'm enjoying my morning coffee and don't want to spoil it quite yet by turning on the TV.

cozietoesie · 25/02/2017 15:02

Well at least you still have TV to turn to, Across. (Or, at least, a choice of stations? Wink)

Roussette · 25/02/2017 15:04

On a light note... I'm watching Wales v Scotland Six Nations Rugby. The camera has just panned in to the crowd to a row of Donald Trumps! Ridiculously orange faces, wigs and very long red ties Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 25/02/2017 15:11

So far, cozie! I expect any day now to see 'big brother' style propaganda 'briefings'. But for now, Rachael Maddow keeps us sane. Smile

cozietoesie · 25/02/2017 15:13

Any prospective candidates emerging, Across?

merrymouse · 25/02/2017 15:19

Has he forgotten the Obama took power just as the biggest financial crash since the Great Depression was taking hold?!

Selective memory.

He refused to repay a loan to Deutsche Bank because:

"His suit argued that the financial crisis was equivalent to an earthquake, triggering a “force majeure” clause, which allows for a payback extension in extraordinary circumstances."

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-22/deutsche-bank-s-reworking-a-big-trump-loan-as-inauguration-nears

Eventually they settled, but it's not clear why.

Trump seems to treat his supporters like idiots.

merrymouse · 25/02/2017 15:24

Oh, okay, bigly, it's worse - Trump may just be copying his idiot supporters.

cozietoesie · 25/02/2017 15:24

I'm thinking about Newsom, for example.
