I said on one of the earlier threads that I think/hope that Trump's brazenness will be his undoing. People stay in abusive relationships because the abuser doesn't start off being abusive - they start out being charming and lovely and slowly reel in their partner by eroding their self esteem and isolating them from their friends and family. If Trump had any political nous, he would have started off quietly signing off things that were popular or neutral, reining in the tantrums and insults and acting like a 'normal' President to lull everyone into a false sense of security and think maybe he won't be so bad after all. Instead, he's gone straight into full on dictator mode with the Muslim ban and now trying to abolish the most fundamental tenets of democracy like a free press and the right to protest. I agree that there is a hard core of supporters that will stand by him whatever he does but I can't see the non crazy people that voted for him just happily sitting back while he destroys democracy.

amispartacus · 25/02/2017 08:42

Never heard of that CaveMum, is that really a thing? (Sounds a bit dubious in terms of security and predicting everything?

I think it's after the events. Not before.

BiglyBadgers · 25/02/2017 08:45

Radio 4 has been reporting Trump's attacks on the media all morning. They just had an interview with the head of the white house correspondents Assoc.

He's pissed off the Daily Mail.

I wonder if he knows the Daily Mail and who its audience are?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/02/2017 08:55

I know this is a ridiculous thought but he's been so explicitly incompetent and not subtly undermining democracy by being sneaky but rather smashing it apart with a wrecking ball that I sometimes wonder whether he is a democrat in disguise trying to disillusion people with the Republican Party.

I know this is fanciful and gives him credit for being smart enough to carry that off but I can't wrap my head around how this is how a POTUS is behaving. He's behaving atrociously in such an obvious way it's unfathomable.

Un-American': CNN anchor Jake Tapper condemns the White House for BANNING news outlets from Sean Spicer's press briefing

White House Press Secretary canceled a planned on-camera briefing like those lampooned by Saturday Night Live
Instead he hand-picked who could ask him questions in his office - banning CNN, The New York Times, the BBC and DailyMail.com
Fox News - which was allowed in - reported that Spicer said: 'We invited the people that we thought we wanted in the room'
CNN anchor Jake Tapper has hit out at the White House, calling actions 'petulant'
His boss used CPAC conference to lash out at 'fake news media' and derided the 'Clinton News Network'
Defiant CNN say: 'We'll keep reporting regardless.'

Tapper used press Secretary Sean Spicer's words against him, when he said on December 16 the White House would not ban any media organization.
Spicer had said: 'We have a respect for the press when it comes to the government. That is something you can't ban an entity from - Conservative, Liberal or otherwise.
'I think that's what makes a democracy, a democracy versus a dictatorship.'
Tapper continued: 'This White House does not seem to respect the idea of accountability, this White House does not seem to value an independent press.
'There is a word for that line of thinking. The word is un-American.'
The White House blocked most of the media from attending the briefing on Friday several hours after the president called some of them 'fake news.'

Spicer canceled a planned, on-camera briefing and held a private briefing inside his office that was open to only certain reporters.
Among the outlets allowed in were Breitbart News, the previous employer of chief strategist Steve Bannon. Others to be allowed access were Fox News.

The ones banned included DailyMail.com, the BBC, the New York Times, Politico, and CNN - which hours earlier President Trump had called the Clinton News Network.

Well - the DM - or this reporter - does not like Trump. That report tells the truth and it tells facts. It's spun - but the facts are

Spicer did say that about a free press.
Trump did say that about the press.
Breitbart news did employ Steve Bannon.

More from Mem Fox

Fox worried about Australian attitudes

Fox also said she feared Australia was heading down the same unwelcoming pathway as the US appeared to be.

"I'm very frightened that Australia will go the same way as America, with extremists in power, racist hatred, ghastly speech against decent people," she said.
"I have written a new book which is about, ironically, welcoming strangers to a strange land — Australia — and I wrote it because I perceived that Australia was losing its gorgeous warmth of character in our attitude to newcomers.

"The irony is that this happened to me at about the same time as I was about to publish this 'welcome to Australia' book."

He's pissed off the Daily Mail.

I wonder if he knows the Daily Mail and who its audience are?

It's America First. Foreign press are enemies, regardless of who they support.

When he cancelled the live camera session, Spicer explained that they wanted the President to transmit the message.
In all that mess it's likely that Trump said no to Spicer on TV so that he'd be the only one in the news.
Because journalists would grill him on Trump's speech and he'd would be the one on the news.
Boy, that did backfire. :)

merrymouse · 25/02/2017 09:09

So while Farage was talking about a 'global revolution' at CPAC, Trump was banning the Daily Mail and UKIP couldn't get elected in 'the capital of Brexit'.

As a global movement it's looking a bit shonky.

That's actually cheered me up if he's banned the Daily Mail.
If the DM (rightly) kicks off against Trump's media ban that will influence the Tory party to stop holding his hand in their desperation to make Brexit work and it will shock the DM readership. Which is massive and international.

Sorry yes I should have explained that the "tick tock" is available after the event. So Press can request the "tick tock" from a specific day if they feel the need. It's probably how they know already that he's spent hours playing golf! I note there have been no denials from Angry Spice on this fact Wink

I think the "tick tock" will be redacted over issues of National Security, or just say something bland like "The President entered the Sit Room for a briefing."

I'm obviously behind the curve, but I've only just realised that you can read full transcripts of the Press Briefings on the White House website. It has amused me this morning to imagine Melissa McCarthy saying the words!

Here's the link to yesterday's gaggle: www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/02/24/press-gaggle-press-secretary-sean-spicer-2242017

He does like to say "literally" a lot! And I'm glad that those in the room tried to question him on why others were excluded, as well as the topic of unnamed sources. Even though he failed to answer the questions properly Hmm

Yes, and this reminds me of?
People hiding runaway slaves.
People hiding Jews.
People hiding Catholics/Protestants.

It's the hallmark of a healthy society.

merrymouse · 25/02/2017 09:24

I thought they originally claimed Trump had only hit a few shots, but then the pro golfer tweeted about playing a full round.

To be fair, I suspect other world leaders spend more time in the gym/exercising than Trump does playing golf.

However, Trump was always tweeting about Obama and golf so he is certainly a dishonest hypocrite.
