Colleague cut up something on my desk. Aibu to be annoyed?

Returned after some time off and colleague as a joke had cut the head off a figure on my desk.

It's fine to have a joke but to damage property I think is taking it too far.

What type of figure? What was it made of? Why on earth would they do it?!

If it's trump fair enough or Hitler or such but no they shouldn't be touching your stuff

Is it replaceable? Can you send them a link to somewhere they can buy you another one and then calmly ask how long it will be before the new one arrives?

Don't get angry or upset but be matter of fact. You broke it so of course you will want to replace it.

That's weird and a bit creepy. Definitely deliberately cut off, not accidentally damaged? Ask them to replace it and say you'll take it no further if they do.

Why do you need to know what figure it was? It's an animal so nothing offensive in terms of politics/race/religion.

He did it as a joke.

I'd raise a grievance. I'd want to know his motivation and how it's funny.

If it's overlooked and he wears a tie, snip it off and you can all have a good laugh.

I suppose if it was a freebie of the kind you get with a McDs meal, then it's slightly more understandable than if it's a collectible clone. Or a plasticine model.

I'd go batshit crazy. Fundamentally it has nothing to do with him what's on your desk. It's criminal damage. I'd tell him so, too.

I wouldn't care what it was or what it was made of! If someone damaged something on my desk I'd be fuming. Did you say anything yet OP?

YANBU - it's one thing to inconvenience someone or hide your stuff but permanently/irreveresbly damaging someone's personal property is not okay. I'd be asking him to replace it, even if it only cost a couple of pounds it's the principle of the matter, and if he refused I'd be taking the issue to HR/my manager - yes you are liable for your personal items, but that shouldn't mean people can knowingly and willfully destroy stuff, just because it happens to be on my desk in the office, without some sort of consequence.

I do know someone who worked in the office down the hall from me, years ago, who did something similar despite everyone telling him it was a bad idea and in very bad taste, but they bought a replica of the figure, cut the head off it and then wrapped up the original like a present ... the other person came back and was devestated to see their figure damaged, he came in a bit later and delivered her "welcome back" present to cheer her up after finding her damaged property and she nearly killed him when she opened it and realised it was his idea of a bad joke and she'd got upset for nothing ... but even he didn't go as far as destroying her property and just made it appear that way.
