From the comments section of the Wash Po (largely sympathetic to the "rescind the state visit" camp):
"I watched most of the debate and was impressed with the impassioned yet nuanced arguments on both sides of the issue. Its purpose seems to have been more about going "on the record" and honoring the voices of their constituents - without the power to directly change the status of the visit - and was a revealing statement about the way an ally perceives the US, and 45 in particular.
I appreciated that many of them acknowledged that the channels of communication must be kept open and relationships nurtured with the long term in mind, while also denouncing 45's fear-based, dangerous rhetoric by not making his visit an official State Visit.
A State Visit, with its pomp and ceremony, is a privilege, not a right or requirement. Even the woman Muslim parliament member who spoke strongly and eloquently against the State Visit acknowledged that conversations must still be had. To downgrade his visit would be the closest thing to a big-picture win-win I can imagine.
Thank you to the parliament members who spoke out forcefully and honestly, yet with respect to your colleagues, on the issue. You held up a mirror to our leader, and the reflection was deplorable. I hope for the sake of the US and the world that we can reverse our course and restore respectability in very short order."
And another comment:
"The British Parliament seems to know Trump, better than Trump knows himself!! After hearing that debate there is no doubt that they have been listening very carefully to trump's vitriol words and have read EVERY nasty tweet. "
