The Washington Post's ace new slogan is a stark warning to Donald Trump about a free press huff.to/2l0m7Vq

Morning everyone (it is for me anyway!). A few threads back I was talking about how some of the satire and comedy fell a bit flat for me. I just came across this tweet from RoguePOTUS that might explain it a bit better:

RoguePOTUSStaff @roguePOTUSStaff Feb20

Everyone who thinks it's entertaining to watch POTUS act foolishly better start being afraid. He's not funny, he's dangerous.

TheClaws · 22/02/2017 22:09

Democracy dies in Darkness

and I do love the Washington Post's new slogan - apt, poetic, and hopefully not prescient. Thanks Ginger.

amispartacus · 22/02/2017 22:09

He isn't funny. But satire can be used to make a point to people.

The getting your intel from Fox news is a classic.

Trump watches Fox news. Sees something about China. Decides to tweet about it. It's made up / inaccurate. China reacts by imposing tariffs on American goods. Person in US factory loses job.

That can easily be satirised - and versions of it. Satire to nudge believers towards the Oh Fuck type of thinking.

In the eighties we had the horror which was was Margaret thatcher who was a disaster for many pp. We had 'Spitting Image' which brilliantly mocked her and her cabinet. I guess it was a release from the shock at the cruelty of her politics, made it more bearable. Didn't change anything tho sadly

cozietoesie · 22/02/2017 22:24

I've never not thought he was dangerous, Claws. Sad

KAC has to be sidelined up remember. (After a fashion, anyway.) She knows too many of the closets now.

Newsnight is in Stoke tonight, talking to local residents. Will be interesting as Paul Nuttall is standing here.

The discussion in Stoke is important as it was the highest vote Leave, 67% I think. They're not fundamentally racist just utterly disillusioned and pissed off.

ami Sadly, I think satire (at least some of it) will be having the opposite affect. Those hard-line alt-right supporters get even more worked up and outraged at any kind of mocking. Their support can then become even more ingrained and the divide is deeper.

cozietoesie · 22/02/2017 22:52

It's a tricky line to tread, there's little doubt. You're not dealing with rationality.

amispartacus · 22/02/2017 22:55

They are probably not the audience who need nudging. Just like Brexit - half the country voted differently. I am sure that of those who voted for Trump, some did so reluctantly. Hard line people won't be nudged. Moderates can be.

Satire always was a political weapon, and we're in a war, not sure what the answer is, but it helps to smile. Being laughed at annoys them it's true, but what can you do?

Music would be good, and more unifying. But music like that doesn't seem to happen any more.

The song, "We shall not be moved" has travelled the world and seen off countless dictators, (and is Leicester City's football club song, but times have changed. Good book about it:

Love the Washington Post banner!

Can't watch Question Time anymore, same old postures brought out every single time, very tiresome.

Thank you again to everyone who takes time (lots of it!) to put such interesting info on the thread, it's bigly great 😬

cozietoesie · 22/02/2017 23:02

I'm more worried, Claws, about 45 becoming bored and sending off a few nukes to settle some dispute or other. (Which, I'm afraid, I think will happen.)

Deejoda · 22/02/2017 23:10

I'm with you cozie. I dread what he'll do if he gets bored or throws a tantrum over some slight. I fear for the people whose lives will feel the biggest impact

I hope that Across and hers are safe by the way. I understand that California is being hit hard at the moment.

SanFranBear · 22/02/2017 23:48

Just finished watching the Rick Hall documentary on the presidency. It's long but we'll worth a watch:

One thing that struck me (well, many things did to be honest but I can't remember them all) was that towards the end, they touched on how the president really doesn't have any power. He heads the whole shebang up but in real terms, it's a frustrating position to have. They used Obama's proposed changes to gun laws following Sandy Hook as the clear example - he was so passionate for change, Biden was perfectly placed to lead it and yet completely stonewalled and nothing changed.

I honestly cannot see SCROTUS having the patience or pragmatism to either play the long game or accept that some times you're just not going to win.

I have a very personal link to Sandy Hook and it still blows my mind that the senseless murder of 7 year olds wasn't enough Sad

Brilliant infographics on Trump's business and finance. I agree that the media following the money and following the ties to Russia is what is going to bring him down.
