The New Yorker article on Michael Flynn was really interesting. I don't subscribe but was able to get access.
It basically covered the history of the post of National Security Adviser, Flynn's background and how his old CO didn't recognise the man who stood up at the RNC - “That’s a vitriolic side of Mike that I never knew.”
I must say, Flynn sounded like one hell of an impressive soldier. Not too good at diplomacy maybe but his army record is undeniable. It looks as though once he moved out of 'on the ground' warfare and particularly when he was Director of the DIA, he was a bit chaotic and liked to change things up somewhat. I can see why he appealed to Trump actually. Apparently, his team called his many misstatements 'Flynn facts'
Sound familiar?
He was a little obsessed with Iran though and after he left the military, became pretty outspoken and a loose cannon on that topic and radical islam. And then he met Trump and knew he was going to be president!
It looks as though the Russian thing wasn't his smoking gun (well, other than his call with the ambassador of course) and although he stood up and applauded Putin, I would say his links to the alt-right and white supremacists are more troubling. And his obsession with Iran of course.
It ends discussing Russia and all the bits we've covered in recent days but the final paragraph is really interesting:
"This story is bigger than Mike Flynn,” the senior military intelligence official said. “Who told Mike to go do this? I think somebody said, ‘Mike, you’ve got some contacts. Let them know it’s gonna be all right.’ Mike’s a soldier. He did not go rogue"
Apologies if someone has summarised much better but a fascinating read.
