Lorelai Gilmore is such a bitch! *SPOILERS*

On maternity leave. I may have binge watched 6 series of Gilmore Girls Blush (whilst also doing mindless prep for baby tasks, laundry, knitting, batch cooking etc, don't judge me!).

She is controlling and hypocritical as displays many of the characteristics of her parents who she claims to dislike so much, self centred, a show and treats men abominably! I find myself disliking her more and more with every episode (just hitting the bit where she cheats on Luke) Angry

KickAssAngel it really bugged me that she has all these amazing quips tripping of the tongue all throughout each series (sorry, season) and then is a total bitch at her father's funeral. Not one funny quip that was slightly inappropriate for the occassion - just horrible miserable tales of what a neglected/delinquent daughter she was.

Also, why had that woman not been depicted having a least one anxiety attack? At the rate she talks and the amount of caffeine and crap she consumes, she is a prime candidate for a proper breathing-in-bag moment.

I wish Paris had been working ER or been a registrar lording it over med students ala House.

Don't get me started on Luke and his wig/hair dye...he also seems like the biggest bore. Why hadn't he done something really crazy in the hiatus? Like got a motorbike or taken up mountain climbing or just become passionate about SOMETHING other than LG. He just stood still as a character.

Grrrr. I was so disappointed. And overly invested.

BrownEyedLady · 20/02/2017 22:35

Also, I think Rory and Jess did date in real life...

user1487175389 · 20/02/2017 22:36

And I'm not keen on all the nastiness about Lauren Graham's current appearance. Beautiful woman has the perfect audacity to look her age and out on a little weight. Shock horror! Come on mumsnet, sort it out. We may as well get our own sidebar of shame and be done with it. Sad

PerditaNitt · 20/02/2017 22:36

I agree - Lorelai was self-absorbed, hypocritical and rude. Don't get me started on Rory.... That said, it is perfect maternity leave TV; it is very pleasant background telly and you don't miss much when you turn away to deal with a poonami halfway through an episode...

For a year in the life, they should have scrapped Rory and Lorelai completely and just spent four episodes focusing on Mrs Kim and Lane Smile. Maybe they could have explained where Mr Kim was for seven seasons...!

lorelairoryemily · 20/02/2017 22:39

I love Lorelai!!!

PerditaNitt · 20/02/2017 22:41

TheWinter - spot on! Generally useless bunch

Also, Lane should have been with her soulmate Dave, not that muppet Zach! Grrr

Sugarcoma · 20/02/2017 22:43

Binge-watched it last summer and nearly started this exact thread so many times - except my title would have been 'Lorelei is a terrible mother'.

Hated the reboot/all seasons thing but tbh I kind of liked that Rory hadn't achieved all these lofty ambitions - I kind of identified because when I left uni I also thought I would be in a certain place career wise 10 years later and due to a various things it really hasn't happened and I think there's a lot of us (Millenials) who were told we could achieve anything if we followed this very narrow career path and it turned out to be bs.

user1487175389 · 20/02/2017 22:47

Yes perdita she should have been with Dave, but Dave got himself a starring role in The OC and they had to write him out.

addlebrained · 20/02/2017 22:49

I think all the character had good and bad points and some (lorelai included) had some insight into them too - I watched GG several times (binge and otherwise...!) and decided I probably wouldn't be their friends if they were real people but I loved the show anyway...

Littleredhouse · 20/02/2017 22:49

I agree - Lorelei is a selfish, neurotic, pain in the arse, and Rory was pretty dull. It really pissed me off how the whole town idolised them so much! I did like Jess though; he was definitely the best of Rory's boyfriends.

TatianaLarina · 20/02/2017 22:55

Agreed, it's disappointing.

Graphista · 20/02/2017 23:00

I love it.

The whole point is the cycle repeating - that we're more like our parents than we care to admit to ourselves.

They're meant to be flawed characters, better than saccharine perfect ones.

Re pp watching charmed - how? They've bloody took it off Netflix uk

Palegreenstars · 20/02/2017 23:00

Lane+Dave4eva

I hated Rory's development in the new series. Such a disappointment. Series 7 did go down hill but I liked that it ended with a career happy ending rather than a relationship one.

But as always in these shows her career doesn't matter as much as her love life (or the last twist)

Bahh · 20/02/2017 23:07

I won't say I didn't notice how Lauren Graham looks now but that is purely down to the fact that she's not really been in anything for a good long while so it was a bit of a shock.

Agreed the reboot was awful, so anti-climactic. What actually happened in it? Not a lot until the very last minute. I don't think it's believable that Rory would be struggling so much career wise, we last saw her go off to cover Obama on his bid for presidency?! What the hell did she do for that to not have led to something bigger? Doesn't make sense, however I can draw parellels between being a naturally high achieving kid and that nosediving as you get older simply because you've leveled out and are average now. I also think Lorelei and Luke would have married MUCH sooner. And she would have had nice things to say about her dad, they had more of an understanding than her and Emily did. He was very close to Rory, he told her he was proud of her a few times etc. She was horrible to Emily about the giant portrait. Why does it bloody matter how big it is, it's not your house Lorelei Angry

And yes in general Lorelei is really selfish and a massive helicopter parent. When she stopped speaking to Rory simply because she was going through a normal young adult phase of exploring different things etc, and she didn't approve because it's not what they agreed would happen when Rory was in the womb. Okay.

She likes to pick and choose when the extravagant gifts/cheques are suitable for her. She had planned for Rory to go to Harvard all along - how was she planning to pay for it on a single income household? She was always going to go back to mummy and daddy because she's entitled and it's convenient for her to do so.

On the other hand, lovely lovely Logan 😍

Do I win AIBU now? Grin

Lauren Graham doesn't look her age, she looks like a woman who tried not to look her age by having some rather unfortunate plastic surgery.

TisMeTheLadFromTheBar · 21/02/2017 01:11

I'm on season 4 so haven't got to the cheat thing yet. She is such a wagon. Thinking she can treat everyone like crazy. She's always manipulating Rory. I'm particularly enjoying how miserable they both are in season 4 in comparison to how smug they were in the beginning. Rory treated poor Dean so badly.

kmc1111 · 21/02/2017 02:28

She's pretty awful. I do like her a lot better than Rory though, at least she has a bit of an independent streak and some motivation, even if she does make a mess of everything.

Rory's just so dull and useless. For all the talk of how smart she is, throughout the entirety of the show it's only something we're told, never something evident in her words or actions. Lane came off smarter, Paris monumentally so. At best Rory was just an average book-ish teen, not the brilliant prodigy we were meant to think she was. By the time she gets to Yale she just seems like a little child compared to everyone around her, thoroughly outmatched and deeply immature. I truly expected a reveal somewhere down the line that Richard had traded in every favour he was owed to get her in.

I also felt Dean was awful and so dull with his sad little 50's housewife fantasy, and always thought it was so odd that Lorelai preferred him over Rory's other guys when he was by far the one most likely to derail her plans with a young marriage/pregnancy since that's the only place his life was headed.

And yeah, Lauren Graham's gone absolutely crazy with botox and fillers and it makes her hard to watch. It's not weight or age, if you watch Parenthood you can see the very quick progression from her looking like her old self, then looking a little fresher, and then suddenly having such full and high cheeks they make her eyes permanently squint.

steff13 · 21/02/2017 02:52

I won't say I didn't notice how Lauren Graham looks now but that is purely down to the fact that she's not really been in anything for a good long while so it was a bit of a shock.

Gilmore Girls ended in 2007 and Parenthood was from 2010-2015. She wasn't on a series for three years, I wouldn't class that as a good long while.

dylsmimi · 21/02/2017 04:51

graphista charmed is on E4 two episodes on at 12 (can tell I'm on maternity leave!) I missed the first couple of episodes but as its 2 per day we are already on the series where Paige is introduced -Cole is 'good' and before it all goes tits up for the final crap series when I will stop watching and pretend it wasn't written!! Kind of like the writers of GG Grin

Also isn't jess' mum Liz ? I think she likes Rory and would have liked them to be together as it seems everyone loves her. Op you may not have for up to the Liz but get though!
It's only since the year in the life that I haven't liked Rory and lorelia before they were ok but the other characters made it - a bit like Gavin and Stacy.
Love Mrs Kim

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 21/02/2017 09:44

I was so disappointed in the four seasons one. I waited for months for it and my opinion of Lorelei and Rory completely changed!
When I originally watched it I was a teenager and thought that she was such a cool mumBlush
But she was irresponsible and childish.
Love Emily, sooki, Kim, Paris and of course luke!
I do hope they make another one though, would love to see Lorelei as a grandmother

Loopyloo80 · 21/02/2017 10:03

Erm... am I the only one who likes Lorelai?! (And also agree with pps finding the posts about her appearance disappointing. She's a woman in Hollywood. We all know they can't win. And I still think she looks great - she's almost 50!)

I loved that the show always passed the bechdel test every episode. Lorelai was witty and brave and a feminist.

Okay she was kind of a mess with relationships though - and I was uncomfortable about when she stopped talking to Rory when she quit school (but the writers probably had to find a way to make them fight for plot reasons!).

The junk food thing went a bit far.

And yeah - Dean was a bit stalkery.

Rory was never my favourite. I never got why the town adored her either.

Paris and Emily were by FAR the best characters. And, in the revival, have the best plot lines. I wanted more Paris!

I also felt really disappointed about Lane's plot from season 7 and in the revival. Lane was so cool! She never seemed destined to just turn into her mother.

It was so irritating how ASP mostly ignored season 7 because she didn't write it. Rory didn't come across well in the revival at all. But then, she wasn't too concerned about whether or not the guys she was with were attached even when she was young. Dean was married when she slept with him. But you'd have hoped she'd have outgrown that!

Also agreed that Lorelai's cruel words at her father's funeral weren't really true to character.

I thought Lauren Graham did a great job overall in the revival though. The final episode, when she had her memory about her father, made me tear up.

I'd love another series to see how she handles Rory's pregnancy etc Smile (and to see more of Emily and Paris!).

Loopyloo80 · 21/02/2017 10:08

(I have to say - in the original series - I hate how rude she was to Sookie sometimes though. Sookie! Who wouldn't want Sookie as your best friend?!)

amusedbush · 21/02/2017 10:09

Maybe they could have explained where Mr Kim was for seven seasons...!

Amy Sherman-Palladino said in an interview that this was the joke. It was so casual and slipped in there because he'd always been there, we just hadn't noticed him.

Jess is wonderful, he was too good for Rory and wouldn't have tolerated her bratty behaviour.

Jess was a bratty little bitch who treated Rory terribly when they were younger. He'd have a brass neck to say anything about her behaviour. #TeamLogan

Loved Luke and Dean.

Dean starts off like a human labrador and quickly becomes super jealous and controlling. He's really not a nice person.

sabi333 · 21/02/2017 11:48

Jess was awful. Particularly in the episode when he had a fight with Dean at the house party. In fact he was downright abusive.

Lorelei planned on getting assistance from the college with Rorys fees, only she couldn't because of the money her dad gave her ( which she gave back to them I believe to cover the original school fees).

And as much as I like Luke - not introducing your daughter to your fiancee for months and months because you are worried she will like her more is pretty awful.
