Notice how John Oliver, in addition to mentioning the poor Kim Jong-un's murder (BTW, which has an interesting side line about who can investigate his death Hmm), also mentions this white skin head guy who got caught planning to plant 10 bombs across Target shops!
But the Sweden incident is, of course, much more serious. And fear the refugees.

PausingFlatly · 20/02/2017 14:06

"Re Sweden, I think he just meant - "that thing about Sweden that we all saw on TV last night". Failure of thought and communication."

Yy, this is the effect I was talking about before.

The temptation is to take his words and add our own reconstruction, so that he makes sense.

The problems with that are:

a) each person adds their own meaning and then credits 45 with it;

b) filling in the gaps disguises what 45 actually did - which was either to totally fail to grasp and communicate simple facts, or to cynically use (a) to mislead people.

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 14:08

He still hasn't realised what being POTUS actually means.

Hi! Long time lurker here who felt compelled to write a slightly OT post re Sweden.

This time last year I still lived in the UK and was in the middle of organising a very sudden move back to my native Sweden for my Swedish/British family (because of the upcoming EU ref). At that time, Sweden was in the news a lot, and not in a positive way. I saw several Mumsnet posters say that they would never let their daughters go to Sweden because of how dangerous it was. I was angry, but also a bit scared. What if it really was as bad as everyone seemed to think it was?

Because moving in with family wasn’t an option, and because we didn’t have any proof of income we were quite limited with regards to finding somewhere to live. We managed to get a flat in a rural area which happens to have the third highest number of refugees per capita in Sweden. I think at least 10% of people here are refugees. There was an asylum home across the street (closed now because of decreased demand).

I can come up with one complaint about all the refugees we have met: they tend to offer my toddler chocolate or sweets (just like the typical MIL), which I would rather avoid for health reasons. In general they are very generous and happy to talk to us. Those dangerous rapist and terrorist men always smile and wave at my son and are always the first to help me with the buggy on the bus. I have met Syrian women who worked as DJs and solicitors in pre-war Syria (with brothers and husbands who are tradesmen, so not from some kind of cultural elite). Some refugees who did work experience for a local contractor had a Learn Swedish CD on in the background while working. When we went to a beach, a big asylum home were there on a day out. Quite a few Swedish teenage girls in bikinis were there. 0 cases of sexual harassment occurred.

These are just my experiences and I know that others will have had negative encounters with refugees, but I am so sick of the ”look at what is happening in Sweden” thing. We are still here and our society is not on the brink of collapse. I wish we could have an open discussion about problems with integration and misogyny in other cultures without the obvious conclusion being ”Build the wall!”.

Sorry if it has been posted before, but it looks like Fox and Friends are not so POTUS friendly anymore.

It looks like someone did cross a line. They didn't like the line "enemy of the American people"

He still has staunch defenders. Hannity, Limbaugh and Breitbart? For how long?

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 14:19

I imagine that Mattis will be feeling the need to spend more time with his family soon. Wink

AcrossthePond55 · 20/02/2017 14:19

Well, now that you mention it, cozie, there IS a balcony on the White House. Luckily there's no parade ground or long mall in front of it like Buck Palace has. Although I'm sure Scrotus has 'plans' for that along with Palace-izing the WH. He already put that tacky gold drape up behind him during his press conference. Can a throne and 'household cavalry' be far behind?

Anyone remember Pres Snow from the Hunger Games? Yeah, like that.

Lweji · 20/02/2017 14:20

Oh, look, notinawarzone. You're fake news! Wear it with pride.

Lweji · 20/02/2017 14:21

He already put that tacky gold drape up behind him during his press conference.

I've checked. It was already there during Obama's Presidency. :)

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 14:21

He can't get round the fact that he was only 'elected' though, Across. Not 'chosen by God' etc etc.

Lweji · 20/02/2017 14:25

But God guided the voters!
He had the call and took the path to winning bigly.

StatisticallyChallenged · 20/02/2017 14:25

That's interesting notinawarzone. I was over in Stockholm a couple of times last year, one of my visits coincided with the period where the daily mail was reporting on hoards of refusers congregating at the train station , attacking women and so on. I got the train in from the airport and stayed at a hotel just over the road. I didn't see a hint of trouble or crowds. We passed a few beggars who appeared to be immigrants/refugees but otherwise...nada

I'm not saying there's been no issues but what I saw or rather didn't see did suggest some serious truth stretching

SenecaFalls · 20/02/2017 14:27

I imagine that Mattis will be feeling the need to spend more time with his family soon.

He may have to think of a different excuse. Mattis has never been married and has no children. His other nickname (besides Mad Dog) is the Warrior Monk.

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 14:29

A minor detail, Seneca! Grin
