It's mystifying that people are so concerned about vetting refugees but not potential gun owners
The urge to mistrust outsiders is very deep seated and easy to stir up where people have a pre existing sense of having been wronged or treated unfairly.
In a culture with high levels of inequality the feeling that life is unfair is likely to be prevalent.
Trump isnt working with reason and logic, he works at the level of emotional response, eliciting and harnessing primitive urges

MsHooliesCardigan · 20/02/2017 11:07

I remember seeing this comedian on Live at the Apollo asking an American audience member 'Do you think there is a connection with lots and lots of Americans owning guns........and lots and lots of Americans getting shot?' He asked it in such an innocent tone of voice, it was hilarious.
From an outside perspective, it seems so obvious that having a country awash with guns is inevitably going to lead to more people being killed with them but so many Americans just can't seem to see it like that. I remember an American on some website arguing that the way to stop school and campus shootings is to arm all teachers and lecturers with automatic rifles Hmm
Because that couldn't possibly go wrong.

Good morning Amispartacus and everyone.

I felt strangely comforted after watching the actual Fox News Sweden broadcast and slept much better last night. Once I knew the source, Trump's words went from being bewildering to actually very straightforward - he simply said what many of the other Fox News watchers would say when acted on by the persuasive techniques of the "anchor" journalist. So Trump's words then appealed to his supporters because he said what they were thinking.

For what it's worth though, here's my thought for the day. I think that there is a real need for us to take ownership of the debate about treatment of women in different cultures, because otherwise the Fox News people will continue to "own" it. We are so scared of not understanding every nuance and accusations of racism that too often we do nothing when something needs to be done. Fortunately in my city (10 miles from my leafy small town) our local MP built up a track record of offering shelter to women fleeing forced marriages set up by their parents. This gave her credibility and a right to speak up about the various punishments to which women in this community are subject if they transgress very narrow boundaries. It's not a Muslim problem. It's a problem in the small, poor area of Pakistan from which this population comes and they imported this aspect of their culture when they came here. So our MP earned herself a voice, as it were, and from her work has come further work on combatting forced marriage and genital mutilation.

THIS is the problem as I see it...

From Michael Moore
"The other half will go to their graves always believing Sweden had their own 9/11 last Friday night - and nothing will change their minds"

People believe what they want to believe. I hope Sweden calls him to account.

Lweji · 20/02/2017 11:31

Or that migrants are running Sweden to the ground.

Neverthelessshepersisted · 20/02/2017 11:35

I accept what Michael Moore says - he knows what he's talking about.

But if he truly believed he could change nothing he would not live the life he leads.

Personally I feel rather empowered* by the Fox News thing - now I know what's in DT's head and it's all fairly simple.... I feel one step closer to getting inside the heads of his supporters.

*The sensation of empowerment may be shortlived....

Neverthelessshepersisted · 20/02/2017 11:36

Maybe we ought to have a bit of a Fox News roundup every so often? It's quite hard to listen to without support.

peaceout · 20/02/2017 11:45

cock up or conspiracy though?
Did he really think something happened last night in Sweden or was it a deliberate fake fact?

CycleOnTheLEFT · 20/02/2017 11:47

Re Sweden, I think he just meant - "that thing about Sweden that we all saw on TV last night". Failure of thought and communication.

merrymouse · 20/02/2017 11:59

Re: Sweden, I don't remember any US politician advocating for refugees to be admitted to the US without being very strictly vetted.

Even if something had happened in Sweden, it's not clear what Trump was arguing against.

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 12:02

OK, merry. What does he say that is clear?

(Answer in less than 140 without using the word 'bigly'. Grin)

merrymouse · 20/02/2017 12:05

Good pointGrin

Lweji · 20/02/2017 12:12

The wall. The wall is clear (or invisible, who knows). It will be build. It will be bigly and beautiful.

Deejoda · 20/02/2017 12:18

This t shirt is chilling shock
@Destinys that actually sent chills down my spine. How is that ok in any way to anyone to insinuate journalists should be hanged?

MsHooliesCardigan · 20/02/2017 12:19

It's exactly a month since DT was inaugurated. I wonder if he'll hold an impromptu press conference or rally?

peaceout · 20/02/2017 12:26

It might just be a metaphorical wall, or a documentary about a wall

peaceout · 20/02/2017 12:28

Another rally, another tub thumping bible bashing sermon
That's going to get old soon Donny boy

CussingQuim · 20/02/2017 12:30

Why HAS that tweet disappeared? Confused

MsHooliesCardigan · 20/02/2017 12:31

Which tweet disappeared?

Lweji · 20/02/2017 12:43

One tweet that disappeared just said he was on his way to the rally.
I can't think why it was deleted other than that it was pointless.

No idea if others have disappeared too.

Maybe the comments were too grating.

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 12:44

Interesting, Destinys. In 45's mind, might the logical next step be to close down social media?

cozietoesie · 20/02/2017 12:46

Sorry. That would have to be to 'restrict' social media of course.

BiglyBadgers · 20/02/2017 12:47

Spies are 'plotting' to take down Donald Trump, says former CIA operative

Destinysdaughter · 20/02/2017 12:48

Sorry don't get the 45 reference, is that Trump?
