He always says failing NY Times now.

I would love someone to ask him to explain why he thinks it's failing when its subscriptions are increasing.

DH has a subscription to the NY Review of Books (as you might expect, they are not bigly supporters of you-know-who and often run very interesting and informative articles about him and his past exploits).

Recently they reviewed 2 new biogs of Eleanor Roosevelt, a FLOTUS who was genuinely dedicated to improving the lot of her fellow-Americans and worked tirelessly to help the disadvantaged. She was a truly inspiring woman. I'm afraid the current incumbent hasn't started well, what with the lawsuit over 'earning opportunities' and all - even if she's now trying to row back on it. That little episode pretty much extinguished any batsqueak of sympathy I had for her over being married to....well, you probably get what I'm saying.

MsHooliesCardigan · 19/02/2017 08:53

Morning everyone and what a tremendous great beautiful morning. I couldn't bear to watch last night's spectacle so thanks to everyone who gave such a great commentary. It sounds fucking awful.
mini I'd definitely be on for a protest meet up although I'm hoping he'll be impeached before that gets organised.

Roussette · 19/02/2017 08:55

It must be soooo frustrating to ask DT a specific question and the answer is nothing to do with what you've asked.

Bit like this [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0C59pI_ypQ haha]

CussingQuim · 19/02/2017 08:56

"Failing New York Times" = brainwashing his core group of supporters. Not convincing others.

I wonder how big that group really is, or if he even knows for sure? There are a lot of desperate people out there, who won't all have Twitter or alternative news to listen to.

CussingQuim · 19/02/2017 08:57

(Posted too soon)

But then how can he measure them, his actual base of supporters? And how can he whip them into action?

minifingerz · 19/02/2017 08:58

That's great nice Smile Already planning my placard:

Bigly placemark

BiglyBadgers · 19/02/2017 09:13

Phew! Just spent the past hour catching up on all the crazy last night. Thanks for the commentary guys. I spent the evening watching a film about a masterless samurai who wanted to disembowel himself in someone else front yard after his entire family died. So pretty cheering stuff compared to your watching Grin

I would absolutely be up for a mumsnet protest meet up. That would be very exciting!

SanFranBear · 19/02/2017 09:14

Quim (snigger), I was thinking that exact thing as I tried to sleep last night.

There is clearly a hardcore base of people that just will not be swayed no matter what he says or does and I really wonder how many, of the millions who voted for him, that really translates to?

Hopefully, it's only a small percentage but I just don't know Sad

woman12345 · 19/02/2017 09:19

Eleanor Roosevelt wonderful lady. Netflix has a long, but brilliant doc on the life of FDR atm.

nicenewdusters · 19/02/2017 09:27

That's a beautiful, bigly banner Mini, another beauty.

I'm thinking along the lines of:

"Hey Trump, make love not war.
You need permission for both"

Brillig · 19/02/2017 09:28

On the last thread I posted a link to the article by Dave Eggers about the Trump rally he attended pre-election. Just re-read it (I couldn't bear to watch yesterday so thanks to all on this thread who summarised). Basically it was exactly the same.
Press lies ✔
I will create jobs, beautiful jobs, the best ✔
Size of crowd ✔ (Trump said 11,000, Eggers said the hangar held 2,500 and it was half-full)
'Bad, bad people' ✔
Baseball cap and Airforce One theme ✔
He also said nobody actually cared what crap Trump vomited said, they just treated it as a massive entertainment, a spectacle. And when Trump started rambling and repeating himself, people began drifting away. The hangar was almost empty by the end.

He really is totally devoid of thought, imagination, intellect, and it's terrifying.

lljkk · 19/02/2017 09:32

it's like Ann Coulter calling John McCain a narcissist. Trump supporters vaguely know they have heard that word in relation to Trump. She clarified that it's a word suitable for Trump's opponents. They only hear what they want to hear.

nicenewdusters · 19/02/2017 09:33

That's interesting Brillig Let's hope the "fake" news pick up and report on things like that. It's the kind of detail most people (including myself) wouldn't know, but it speak volumes.

lljkk · 19/02/2017 09:34

Ian Hislop on... (BBC) Broadcasting House? Is the first person I've heard be cheerful about Trump. Points out there is a lot of same worries we heard about Thatcher (& Reagan). We survived them, so hopefully can survive Trump-era.

MsHooliesCardigan · 19/02/2017 09:35

We Brits do great placards. I went on the 2010 march against the cuts (which actually was huge) and some of the placards were brilliant. There was one of DC wearing a bouffant blond wig with the caption 'I can't believe it's not Thatcher', one with Cameron and Osborne's faces photoshopped onto Tinky Winky and Dipsy which said 'Living in Laa Laa Land' and one of Cameron and Clegg's faces morphed together saying 'One Mouth. Two Arseholes'.
Trump is an absolute gift in placard/banner terms.

Birdandsparrow · 19/02/2017 09:37

Great thread! I don't understand this about a rally. Why is he holding rallies after only a month in office? Is he campaigning for 2020? Can politicians start outright campaigning whenever they want? Can anyone explain?

nicenewdusters · 19/02/2017 09:41

The BBC news presenter said last night, after the rally, that it was unprecedented for such a rally to be held so soon after taking office.

nicenewdusters · 19/02/2017 09:46

Loved those placards MsHoolies Grin I have a DT mask that was a joke xmas present. Until a couple of weeks ago it was moving around the house, wearing silly glasses, on the face of a reindeer (not a real one!) etc. My dd, who's pre-teen, but aware of Trump and says he's horrible, asked if I'd take it down as she didn't like looking at him !

Brillig · 19/02/2017 09:47

Eggers at Trump rally again in case anyone's interested. It's long, but worth reading in the light of last night's fruitloop performance.

CussingQuim · 19/02/2017 09:48

The username is what I think of our glorious leader SanFran Grin

(Except of course vaginas are actually very useful and I don't know why they're used as the ultimate insult, it's very misogynistic...)

Destinysdaughter · 19/02/2017 09:48

SafariSoGood · 19/02/2017 09:57

Morning all and another new thread Grin

I watched the rally for a short time as DH said he couldn't watch if SCROTUS annoyed him - we managed 20mins! Although there was much tutting from him and snorting from me so dignified

Getting Melania to read the Lords Prayer was a genius move.
She couldn't be accused of plagiarism, the audience think "She might sound foreign, but she says the same prayer as us, so she must be JUST LIKE US"

No mention of Russia - his supporters have very little interest in Russia , if any.
Russia is old news, they are sly and his base can't see what they do.
Unlike ISIS who do things bigly.
