So any non US Citizen who has been to Iran is not allowed into the USA..

Yorke said he was prevented from entering the country due to an Iranian stamp on his passport having represented the ‘World Stars’ in a charity match against ‘Iranian Stars’ in Tehran in 2015

Doctors go there on conferences, meetings, to help share good practice.
Engineers
Economists

It's shameful - it seem so to be labelling people as 'guilty' by association - and it also means the USA is going to lose out on visitors and people attending meetings.

It would be interesting to know exactly what the attitude was before Trump.

I don't know if anyone saw 'You, Me and the Apocalypse' and the bit that saw the US President spouting away a la Trump, and his chief of staff turns and shoots him in the head?

I'm so hoping if Trump's finger hovers over that nuclear button something similar happens!

amispartacus · 18/02/2017 11:00

Trump had said the US had open borders. Not enough screening.
And at the same time he's only doing what Obama already had

Are you suggesting that Trump was creating false scenarios to scare people into voting for him - surely not..

Not sure what it's like now but I've got Iranian relatives with US or UK passports, green cards, visas etc. and it's been a PITA getting onto a plane to the states for ages. Not usually bad US side though.

Some of those living in the states are doctors and surgeons and they do travel within the states and beyond to treat patients or do operations. God knows his they will be affected by the travel fiasco.

SuburbanRhonda · 18/02/2017 11:12

I was just making the point that while most sane people would disagree with the Muslim ban, it seems Yorke wouldn't have been allowed in anyway under existing restrictions. Ridiculous though those are, they're not new rules brought in by Trump.

NotDavidTennant · 18/02/2017 11:16

Purely as a point of pedantry, Dwight Yorke is Trinidad & Tobagan not English.

Bit of a long article but I found it a balanced and rational trump/Hitler comparison

Lweji: "Trump had said the US had open borders. Not enough screening.
And at the same time he's only doing what Obama already had. "

I'm glad you pointed this out! This exact same thing occurred to me. EITHER Obama was terribly neglectful of the borders, in which case Trump is doing something radical and new. OR Obama was protecting the borders, in which case Trump can hardly claim to be a break with the past.

It astonishes me that he ran his whole campaign on the basis that he was going to be different, and now every time people accuse him of doing something outrageous, he claims it's no different from the old administration.

Suburban, thanks for that. I think it's important to keep a realistic view of what this Republican administration is responsible for, and what people were experiencing under other administrations.

Article from 2016 about the introduction of the restrictions for British-national travellers with Iranian stamps in their passports:
www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/middle-east/iran/articles/Been-on-holiday-to-Iran-It-will-make-US-trips-more-expensive-and-stressful/

So entry to the US isn't banned, but travellers have to apply through Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA), not just the Visa Waiver Program. (Don't know what the rules are if Yorke has a Tobagan passport.)

Ha! You Go, Lweji. Grin

BiglyBadgers · 18/02/2017 12:07

Reading the Yorke story I agree that there is a confusion about what was and wasn't allowed under Obama. My understanding is that under Obama he would have needed to get a visa in advance, but upon getting the visa would have been allowed to enter. So if he hasn't realised he need a visa that was his own fault really.

The difference with the Trump ban was that they were saying they would not issue visas to these people and even going as far as to cancel visa appointments with people in the middle of the process. So if he had tried to get the visa in advance and been refused that would have been relevant to the Trump ban. Also I read he had visited America a lot but it is not clear that this has been his first visit since going to Iran. Again if he had been allowed in before with the stamp but is now being refused this would have been a story.

To my mind there is a big difference between making people go through an annoying and time-consuming process to get a visa and and basically telling people to not even bother trying. But I don't think any of the papers I have seen with this story make that distinction and as such are a bit misleading.

SuburbanRhonda · 18/02/2017 12:37

The detail that seems to have been lost on many Trump supporters is that the Obama administration wanted to make sure they vetted certain people thoroughly before they let them in, whereas Trump just doesn't want to let them in at all.

sunnyhills · 18/02/2017 12:38

Very funny News Quiz Radio 4 on Trump .

Comparing his support to fans of football team .If their team get 3 players sent off for career ending red card offences the fans don't say "right I'm through with them " ,they say "fantastic game ,terrific score .And with only 9 players!! "

BiglyBadgers · 18/02/2017 12:40

I'm also listening to R4 news quiz sunny and just came on to post that exact quote Grin

Lweji · 18/02/2017 12:44

The main difference with the ban, as it was applied, was that people with visas and with green cards were being turned away at the border!

BiglyBadgers · 18/02/2017 12:52

I remember we had conversations about Cambridge Analytica and their role in the trump win with their Facebook social media are and such like. This Buzzfeed story is claiming that a lot of other experts say that actually it is bollocks and they didn't have any part in the Trump campaign. Very interesting if true!

interviews with 13 former employees, campaign staffers, and executives at other Republican consulting firms who have seen Cambridge Analytica’s work suggest that its psychological approach was not actually used by the Trump campaign and, furthermore, the company has never provided evidence that it even works. Rather than a sinister breakthrough in political technology, the Cambridge Analytica story appears to be part of the traditional contest among consultants on a winning political campaign to get their share of credit — and win future clients

Just want you all to know that DH says this thread is the best source for his anti-Trump FB rants posts. I'm constantly reading him quotes and links and he's always saying 'Send me that!!!'.

So, you see, you all are a YUGE part of the diabolical 'main stream media' propagating FAKE NEWS! Sad. Just terrible!

As an aside, I'm disgusted with Ann Coulter's remarks about John McCain. I don't agree with a lot of his beliefs and policies, but I will say that he has honour and personal integrity. When he speaks or proposes things, it's because he truly believes that what he's proposing is for the good of the country, not just advantageous for himself and his cronies. I guess that sense of honour in him is one of the reasons he didn't get elected in 2008 (Obama was the main one!). The GOP 'machine' didn't want someone who might 'go rogue' on them*. Well, that and Sarah Palin. Why he let the GOP foist her on him is beyond me.

*Last laugh on them (and us)! Scrotus is the bigglyest 'rogue' there is, in every sense of the word. I'm sure the GOP thought they could 'tame' him and now they've found themselves with a rabid dog literally foaming at the mouth. "Be careful what you wish for" and all that.

And over to Holland where Gerry Wilders is following the Trump plan for power

Geert Wilders launched his election campaign on Saturday, promising to crack down on "Moroccan scum" he said were making the streets unsafe and urging the Dutch to "regain" their country with a vote for his anti-Muslim, anti-EU Freedom Party.
