Lord McAlpine, of not at all sainted memory, apparently stated in one of his books that, when accused of something (possibly) true, it was a jolly good wheeze to feed one's enemy with convincing evidence of some other, false accusation.

One would then produce proof the planted accusation was untrue - completely destroying the accuser's credibility for all accusations.

Thanks for all the great insights and updates gathered here. Bigly grateful. Thinking about the reinforcing nature of subcultures and the bonding force of having a common enemy, like the media or the left. I just hate the effect the whole thing has on me, where I start thinking 'how can his supporters be so stupid'.
I don't think trump has a grand plan other than to enjoy adulation, power and keep reliving the thrill of being elected. I think he has the cognitive ability and attention span of a small child and will keep chasing the next shiny object that floats towards him.
