It's a bigly Trump thread. Another beauty. But you don't need to know what's in it. I don't have to tell you. So there.

Has Trump ever publicly admitted to being wrong about anything?

MrsHoolies I think he has actually, or at least that's what I recall from watching the Apprentice USA many moons ago. I also think that he foreshadowed the possibility of making mistakes in yesterday's press conference:

I can handle a bad story better than anybody as long as it's true and, you know, over a course of time, I'll make mistakes, and you'll write badly and I'm okay with that. But I'm not okay when it is fake.

I was also a bit dismayed that it went on so long meaning that it's become TL; DR for mainstream audiences (perhaps deliberately? Maybe it was a calculated demonstration by SCROTUS of just how far his power extends, and so long as the GOP care more about the opportunities to effect the kind of changes that they would otherwise struggle to achieve then frankly so far as they're concerned the ends justify the means). The mesmeric effect of the full 77 minutes gets diluted when journalists have to condense the story for publication, and as others have pointed out, they actually have to make him appear more coherent than he comes across irl.

Let's hope that there are enough decent Republicans of good judgment to get behind a counter movement before too long.

Today, we are paying for:
-Secret Service for Trump sons in Dubai to open hotel
-3rd $3m trip to Mar-a-Lago in a row
-NYC security (Melania)

MsHooliesCardigan · 17/02/2017 15:47

So what do they do with these immigrants once they've been herded into lorries?
Will there be a mass building programme of
gas chambers detention centres?
I am seriously finding it hard to see the funny side of this now.

I remember yearly mutterings when the Obamas took a holiday about the cost. Every weekend in Florida's going to wear thin pretty quickly.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 17/02/2017 15:52

MsHoolies I want to know what happens to the immigrants once they are deported. The ones who were brought here as infants likely have had minimal contact with their country of birth as their undocumented parents would not have taken them across the border due to the risk of not being able to get back into the US. They will be sent to countries where they have no families, jobs, homes, they may not even speak the language very well if their family made a concerted effort to switch to English after arrival in the US.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 17/02/2017 15:55

Here is an article with comments from people who think the press conference was just fine www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2017/02/trump_supporters_cheer_his_com.html#incart_most-comments

I get how people are frustrated that their coal mines are shut down due to environmental reasons, but do they think their lives will be improved by going down the mines without an EPA or OSHA? - which is what Trump and the Republicans want.

Roussette · 17/02/2017 15:58
. Very scathing on everything to do with Trump and his people
cozietoesie · 17/02/2017 16:02

As I said, Mysterious, he's treating them like babies.

Roussette · 17/02/2017 16:05

It's over. Schumer called the mobilisation of 100,000 troops to deport people 'absolutely despicable and totally un-American'

He was also asked what he thought about Trump's press conference yesterday. He had no words.

Spicer is on in about 50 minutes.

Lweji · 17/02/2017 16:08

I was watching the end of the Stress Conference, and was struck with the comment that they will be preventing crime (at schools) with the good law enforcement officers the US has. You don't prevent crime with law enforcement. You prevent crime with social work, jobs, education, social equality, true equal opportunities, good mental health provisions.

GingerIvy · 17/02/2017 16:10

Okay. he was reading off an autocue.

AcrossthePond55 · 17/02/2017 16:13

Are the Dems of your acquaintance talking about the next election yet?

It's all we're talking about. At the rally the day after inauguration it was pounded into our heads that all the organizing, raising voices, and donating we are doing is being done with an eye to 2018. We know that unless Scrotus really does something illegal there is virtually nothing to stop him and the Reps from putting their agenda into effect. It's all about the 'mid-terms'. As I've mentioned before, we live in a 'true blue' state, but DH and I are seriously considering taking our annual RV trip in Spring/early Summer 2018 to a few 'red' states and volunteering our help where it's truly needed.

I think if he calls out the Natl Guard to assist in rounding up undocumented people, it will not go over well with some of his fan base. Some will like it - but each time he does something stupid like this, it chips away at his support base.

I think you might be surprised at the number of people in the military/Nat'l Guard who are pro-Trump. Plus I'd say the vast majority of our retired/active military friends are rabid Alt-right.

GreenGinger Many people in the US are incensed. I live in a Southern state that is largely Republican. An activist group started up in my city. They held their first meeting and expected maybe 40 or 50 people to show if they were lucky. 400 people turned up

This is so good to hear! Unless you live in Austin, then I'm not surprised!

BiglyBadgers · 17/02/2017 16:26

I'm wondering if it's me... am I just not seeing something and he can't be as bad as I think he is?

I think we all feel like that sometimes sanFran. It is hard to believe that someone can end up in power with views and opinions that seem so radically different from what we had thought of as normal. I will happily put my hand up as a guardian reading lefty but I accept that there are other political views that may have more support and end up in power. I believe democracy is the best system we have available right now and while I will roll my eyes and grumble and even protest at some of the conservative policies I do not question their right to make those policies as long as they stick to the rule of law.

For me what makes Trump dangerous is not that he is right wing but that he has shown a willingness to ignore the law and systems of governance that keeps a functioning democracy in place. When I wonder if I am being over the top I come back to the facts of what he has done. He has blasted and threatened the judiciary, he has brought in an immigration ban that is probably illegal, the republicans have changed the rules for voting in his people when the democrats refused to play ball, he is threatening and trying to silence the media voices against him, he has promoted the private business of his family on social media. All of this can be seen simply by following this own tweets.

I am not relying on interpretation or others opinions of his actions to make my decision. It comes down to what is acceptable to you. In my view what he had done and his actions are not a price that is worth paying for any promised utopia even if he could deliver it.

I also accept that others will feel differently. Some people are willing to give up press freedom and equality for the promise of a shiny perfect future. These people will continue to support him, but I have my own ethical lines and won't be complicit in crossing them.
