To think coming up to 14 months isn't THAT late to walk?

MiL is obsessed with dd walking. Last week she just let her go whilst dd was walking holding her hands and dd fell on her face.

It's ramped up because her other granddaughter who is a few weeks younger than my dd is now waking. However my dd was prem - nearly 7 weeks. If she'd been born on her due date she'd only have been 1 this week.

MiL keeps referring to dd as 'backwards' as in 'what's wrong with her Skating, is she backwards?'
Ds didn't walk until 16 months but MiL has rewritten history and tells everyone he walked at nine months Hmm

It's not that late is it really? Dd walks holding one of my hands and can stand inside but doesn't go anywhere. I reckon it will be another couple of months. Maybe around 16 months like ds was.

4dc here. Mine were 14 months, 17months, 12 months and 14 months respectively.

Your mil needs to be told that 'backwards' is an absolutely unacceptable thing to say or else she'll just keep saying it. And remind her every time that your DS was 16 months to walk, even if it's in front of someone.

OutnumberedbyFurchesters · 14/02/2017 17:50

DD was 17months. And 16.5m before she had the confidence to stand unaided.

But she's more advanced cognitively, and so that took up her energies rather than walking and motorskills.

If my MIL had said anything like that she'd be told not to speak about her like that, and if you can't stop, don't see my child until you can.

startwig1982 · 14/02/2017 17:51

Ds waited until 20 months to walk, so 14 is nothing! I think the advice is that as long as they are walking before 2, not to worry.

Rowgtfc72 · 14/02/2017 17:52

Dd was seventeen months. She didn't crawl till twelve months. Never cruised.

I was fifteen months before I walked.

Skatingonthinice16 · 14/02/2017 17:53

Dd seems there or thereabouts in every other way. She's got 15-20 words and understands instructions well. I've got no concerns really. She had no problems at her development check either. But it sets my teeth on edge when MiL starts going on about why isn't she waking yet? I should make her practice / wear shoes / walk outside etc

I was told children generally have either their first word or first step by age 1, but rarely both! It depends where they are concentrating their efforts.

DD chose the former, and didn't walk till 15 months. No major concerns but she was under a paediatrician for her hips and he wouldn't discharge her till she was walking. Within a week of her taking her first steps we were getting her measured for outdoor shoes, because there was suddenly no stopping her!

BenLinusatemyhomework · 14/02/2017 17:56

2 of mine walked at ten months, 1 at thirteen months and the other at 17 months. Watching the hoon round the park this afternoon, I would defy anyone to tell me which was which - it really is irrelevant. Tell your MIL to wind her neck in.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/02/2017 17:56

DD was 13 months old wjen she walked and there were a few from the NCT class we attended who walked earlier and several who walked later. Wouldn't cross my mind to think there was something wrong with a 14months not walking.

Ds on the other hand, born at 38 weeks walked at 9months and was jumping off the windowsills by 10months. There are advantages to dc not walking for a few monthsSmile

thesockgap · 14/02/2017 17:58

DS1 and DS3 both walked at around 12 months, but DS2 was 15 months before he could take steps unaided. I think up to about 16-18 months is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about?

Helenluvsrob · 14/02/2017 17:58

Haha.
Dc 1 walked at 15 months.
Dc2 at 15months
Dc3 21 months ( when the Physio found nowt wrong but put her in stuff boots that held her feet at right angles to basically stop her knee walking because it was making her Achilles' tendons tight as her feet were always pointed )

They were all too busy talking to walk ! Guess which child is was the earliest to ride a bike and has always been coordinated and " tidy" when moving - yep dc3. Makes no logical sense to me.

My only 2p re late walking is boys that don't walk by 18 months probably warrant a blood test for muscular dystrophy but most " late walkers " are just the later end of normal.

thesockgap · 14/02/2017 17:59

I think the fact your DD was premature is significant too. As you say, taking into account her true due date she should only be just one - so I definitely wouldn't worry that she's not walking yet!

Anatidae · 14/02/2017 18:00

The pp who says that they just use the most efficient method to get around is spot on. Ds was standing and taking a few steps by 11 months BUT it's taken him till 16 months to use it as his primary mode of locomotion. He had this incredible commando crawl that was so funny to watch and extremely fast. That was obviously faster for him and allowed him to motor around with an object clutched in both hands. After that he learned to crawl on hands and knees but didn't like it much - we have woood and hard flooring and it made his skinny knees sore, so he got up and walked.

his aunt walked at 7 months (arrrgggh!) and had to have a helmet as she kept falling into stuff. :)

Backwards is a pretty unpleasant thing to say - I'd be putting a stop to that.

14 months is WELL within normal range.

TheFirie · 14/02/2017 18:02

DS walked at 15 months and will next month compete at the state athletics championship in the 400 meters event. Oh and he didn't talk until he was two and now at 10, he won't stop talking even in the classroom!

MrsWOLF1 · 14/02/2017 18:03

My boys
13 months
13 months
17 months
12 months
10 months
18 months
As for calling your DD backwards how chuffing rude is she ..

Purplefrogshoes · 14/02/2017 18:06

DD was nearly 23 months before she walked

DS was 15 months

x2boys · 14/02/2017 18:10

my son who does have learning disabillities walked at 15 months so no its absolutley no indication of any problems.

crazywriter · 14/02/2017 18:10

DD1 was 14 months when she started walking. Not late at all and about average from what I've heard. dd2 was 9 months but was chasing after her sister!

I'd be telling MIL to sod off with her backwards comment. If she can't be supportive then she won't get the see her GD.

Topseyt · 14/02/2017 18:12

My DD2 was 23 months when she finally walked. She bum-shuffled until then.

DD3 was also a bum-shuffler and walked at 21 months.

Only DD1 had walked at 14 months.

Tell your MIL that she is talking out of her arse and should butt out.

hollyisalovelyname · 14/02/2017 18:12

Don't worry.
Dbro walked at 18 months.
He was the brightest of us and the best at sports - played at very high level.

littlebunnyhophophop · 14/02/2017 18:25

Personally I'd have smacked your mil for that comment my son didn't walk till 18 months he was born with a clubfoot and has asd 'backwards' tsk Hmm but no it's perfectly normal for a 14 month old to not be ready to walk yet , they only start worrying here (local NHS) at 18 months +

HappyAxolotl · 14/02/2017 18:35

My eldest nephew didn't crawl until past 1 and didn't walk until around 2. The day he did crawl he just got on all fours and did a lap of the house at high speed, including up and down the stairs while everyone was still standing around stunned, and he never slowed down since! Then when he walked he did the same trick, just jumped up and ran one day!

The younger one was earlier at starting to do both but a lot slower at getting the skill. It was as if the elder had been waiting to get full co-ordination of his body before trying something new.

kierenthecommunity · 14/02/2017 18:39

My son was 27 months Shock and I was tearing my hair out. And people saying 'make the most of it, you'll be sorry when he can' were Not Helpful. He had over developmental delays and was under a paed doc but she wasn't that concerned as we was cruising and could weight bear. Is your daughter doing that? If so, from my experience you don't need to start worrying yet Smile

FWIW my son is now four and a half and has done junior parkrun (2k) 26 times Smile

kierenthecommunity · 14/02/2017 18:43

Oh and as for mothers rewriting history, apparently my sister was potty trained at nine months Hmm but I was 'backwards' and didn't until 18 months. Seeing as I was another late walker (about 18 months due to hip displacement) I find that astonishing, she must have been the best parent in the world Hmm

Rinceoir · 14/02/2017 18:44

My DD crawled at 6 months, pulled to stand at 7 months and could get up a flight of stairs like the light at 8 months. She finally walked at 15months, having not once stood unaided before. In fact we were in the park one day, she stood up, grabbed my handbag and ran off with it. Missed out on all the wobbly toddler walkinh.

Teddy1970 · 14/02/2017 18:50

My DD was 17 months, tell MIL to piss off...
