I adore pasta and love pretty much love all vegetables including courgette, butternut squash, cauliflower but all of these being marketed as an 'alternative pasta/rice/etc' is a culinary crime! Stupid health fads.

The most recent thing I've come across that made me go Hmm was something called cauliflower 'steaks'. Just basically cauliflower that had been cut into slices and sometimes seasoned. All for a 'bargain' price of £2-3 Shock Confused

HappenstanceMarmite · 13/02/2017 20:53

So do you all make fresh cauliflower rice each time you're going to eat it? Is it a massive faff? I bought some preprepared cauliflower rice but it STANK! Love the idea of it, but not of standing grating a head of cauliflower for each ruddy meal if it won't keep a few days.

(Unless you are severely overweight, but really, why do people these days assume that everyone is overweight?)

I think people assume most people would benefit from restricting their calorie intake, because most people in the UK are overweight or obese (62%) and the percentage of UK internet forum users who are overweight or obese is probably higher. I am assuming this based on internet forum users not being children (fewer are obese/overweight) or very elderly (among whom malnutrition is more common). In addition many people who are a healthy weight will maintain this by careful consideration of their diet, which may include reducing their carbohydrate intake, for example by substituting vegetables for pasta.

I sometimes have courgette spaghetti in place of pasta. I like the taste of it with tomato-based sauces. I make it myself and have it raw or just slightly heated with the sauce. I imagine preprepared might not be as nice!

Birdsgottaf1y · 13/02/2017 21:11

I like my courgette chunky, so like a PP, when I'm cutting calories, I use the 'Slim Pasta/RiceNoodles'.

All the veg that you can spiral, I like thick cut.

MiladyThesaurus · 13/02/2017 21:38

I think it would break DS2's heart if I served up cauliflower masquerading as rice.

Oysterbabe · 13/02/2017 22:13

Just whack it in a blender marmite takes no time at all.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 13/02/2017 22:19

Oh god, not those people. Those people making cauliflower pizza and courgetti carbonara.

Just fuck off. If you don't want to eat pasta, fine - good diet choice, too many stodgy carbs are bad. But don't be the person making meat free alternatives look like meat. Don't tell me that courgetti is just as good as a bowl of spaghetti because we all know you're just big fat fibbers. It's not the same, it's rats.

YellowCrocus · 13/02/2017 22:23

All of these things make me crosser than it is rational for me to be. Eat some fecking courgette if you like, lovely stuff, but ffs, stop pretending it's pasta. Angry

dimdommilpot · 13/02/2017 22:26

I bloody hate courgette.

PickAChew · 13/02/2017 22:26

YANBU, it's just bland sogginess.

FGS,, if you want to low carb, just make the vegetables and protein the mainstays of the meal without pretending there's spaghetti in it!

PickAChew · 13/02/2017 22:30

This is all Boodles are any good for.

I prefer 'Boodles'... Butternut Squash noodles!

But I prefer the taste of pasta so I buy wholewheat, it's less stodgy!

fishonabicycle · 13/02/2017 22:34

Courgetti is ok raw. I imagine it would go all soft and soggy if cooked.

sassolino · 13/02/2017 22:34

I love courgettes but courgetti is an abomination. It is sooo not a pasta substitute. Leave it to Gwynnie and Ella, they can have all the courgetti in the world

MiscellaneousAssortment · 13/02/2017 22:46

What does cauliflower rice actually taste like? I'm struggling to imagine it...

RedBugMug · 13/02/2017 22:48

cooked courgette just 'melt' into goo but raw courgettes makes your gut explode or is it just me

Oysterbabe · 13/02/2017 22:51

It just tastes like cauliflower.
I make cauli "couscous". You bung it in the food processor until it's in little bits, mix with chilli and cumin then roast it on a baking sheet for about 20 minutes. Its just a nice vegetable side dish.

SouthernComforts · 13/02/2017 22:53

Courgetti makes me sad and I can't really explain why.

Life is too short to eat vegetables masquerading as pasta.

HappenstanceMarmite · 13/02/2017 22:59

Thanks Oysterbabe. Haven't got a blender and would consider that a pain in the arse to get out, then clean up, for a portion of faux rice 😱😂

This x 1000. How long will it be before the spirilisers look back at this fad and laugh?

MaisyPops · 13/02/2017 23:02

Make it at home and do 2/3 pasta to 1/3 fake vegetable pasta.
It works nicely but i cant stand it as a substitute. I love carbs too much.

SilenceIsBroken · 13/02/2017 23:11

We have no choice in the matter as DH is allergic to everything that is not made by hand. And I am fat, so it all works out quite well for us.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 23:23

Then get hand made pasta!

Pandakin · 13/02/2017 23:30

Mum bought me some "carrot and swede gnocchi" in Tesco a while back since it was reduced. Her face was a picture when I opened it and it was just vaguely rounded lumps of probably reject veg. The cooking time given would have left the swede rock hard. Yum. Hmm

I made stew instead.

SherlockPotter · 13/02/2017 23:54

Panda I love that stuff! The swede softens within the cooking time :)
