It's an ill wind that blows nobody no good.

The last month has been good for

Journalists
Proper news channels
Lawyers
Novelists

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2017 08:39

It's half term, so some of us may be getting up later than usual Wink

I gave myself insomnia by watching the compilation of Millers interviews on Sunday and watching the Morning Joes panel react. dd and dh watched it with me with utter utter horror. The worst thing was Trump giving Miller the thumbs up after his Goebels like rants.

problem with Flynn resigning is now they can distance themselves from him.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 14/02/2017 08:40

I'm still reading/following, but nothing interesting to add. Be interesting to see if Flynn is a blip or the start of the avalanche.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2017 08:40

He will be just a blip I think :(

Would Russia really invade an EU country?

What are you talking about? Russia doesn't invade anything. It's the population of Russian origin in certain countries that rebels against a corrupt and biased government. No Russian army members at all ever go in. Not even without a uniform. No. It's all LIES and the rigged media.

Neverthelessshepersisted · 14/02/2017 08:42

Destiny. Me too. At least that guy is honest about it. Sunlight disinfectant etc

amispartacus · 14/02/2017 08:42

From the letter:

In his resignation letter, which the White House emailed to reporters, Mr. Flynn said he had held numerous calls with foreign officials during the transition. “Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the vice president-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador,” he wrote. “I have sincerely apologized to the president and the vice president, and they have accepted my apology.

It's from Yes Prime Minister - 'need to know'. I failed to tell you everything you needed to know because you didn't ask me the relevant questions. I didn't lie, nor deliberately mislead, just failed to tell you everything

Did you see this:

www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2016/02/03/world-war-three-inside-the-war-room-bbc-two-review-gripping/

A hypothetical uprising in a Baltic state from local separatists. Incidents happen. Mild escalation.......then it escalates

Would Russia really invade an EU country?

I'm starting to think it might be a possibility so long as Trump is President and won't condemn them for it.

BiglyBadgers

Historians: we bring the lolz. Also the many many warnings, frequently unheeded (perhaps collective noun for a group of historians should be a Cassandra of historians?). But serious dedication to the lolz. Always. I've been keeping that safe since I saw it, just for the good denizens of this, The Best Thread...

What does an invasion look like nowadays?

OP posts:
Lweji · 14/02/2017 08:50

What I wrote is what's happened in Crimea and is happening in the Ukraine. It's not hypothetical.
Allegedly.

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 08:53

Russia has been slowly pushing and pushing at the boundaries of what is acceptable for years now. Every now and again the EU, UN or America have got a bit of a strop on and said some terse words. Nobody has actually done anything serious to stop them despite evidence of incursions into other countries and wide spread hacking of other governments systems. If America isn't going to make any move against them now I can't see anyone doing much to stop Russia quietly taking over the Baltic states. They will all wrong their hands, shuffle their feet and look the other way.

amispartacus · 14/02/2017 08:53

What I wrote is what's happened in Crimea and is happening in the Ukraine

Or..What has happened in the Ukraine?

It's salami tactics. What's the point in nuclear weapons if you can't deter such events happening?

In the documentary, NATO sent troops to defend an airbase and take it from rebels.

Just a strong message.

What does an invasion look like nowadays?

Forcing an area to leave the EU by military force with no triggering if article 50?

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 08:55

Wring their hands...even

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 08:59

History has shown that it's one thing invading another country, quite another staying there.

If Russia really has a GDP the size of Italy, how would it maintain its presence following multiple invasions?

saffronwblue · 14/02/2017 09:01

Bye Flynn. One down.

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 09:01

Vague wondering here, but do you think nuclear arms has made countries less likely to take a stand when they see a country like Russia invading another country as the possible cost is so much higher? If nobody had nuclear arms we would not be so worried about starting a nuclear war, so may be more willing to stand up against them. If so the nuclear deterrent is actually completely the opposite and gives protection to those starting wars who are prepared to take that risk and basically play chicken with the rest of the nuclear powers. Confused

Lweji · 14/02/2017 09:01

Once you install a dictatorship, you don't need to be there for long or spend too much money.
See Iron Curtain.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 14/02/2017 09:02

In terms of what a Russian invasion might look like, the Norwegian drama series Occupied had a fair stab at it. It seemed quite plausible - more a slow infiltration and political arm-twisting rather than turning up mob-handed with troops and tanks. Your basic boiling a frog approach.

amispartacus · 14/02/2017 09:04

bigly

One of the arguments against them....

When do you 'go nuclear'? The video I linked to is an example.

And before you realise, a country has been invaded.

OP posts:
merrymouse · 14/02/2017 09:06

The iron curtain wasn't very sustainable though.

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 09:08

I'm not arguing that Putin would never invade an EU state. It just doesn't seem very sensible.
