Regardless of nuclear power nobody wants a war with Russia. They have a huge army.
Same with China, but not only.
Russia doesn't want a war with the US either.
So, all parties skirmish and view for political positioning.

The Democratisation of the previous Iron Curtain countries and alignment with the West was a major blow and affront to Russia. They've lost a lot of power since then.

The problem will be a bull in a jyna shop who doesn't understand the balance that must be maintained.

Lweji · 14/02/2017 09:09

Not view, vie. Stupid autocorrect.

Lweji · 14/02/2017 09:11

The iron curtain wasn't very sustainable though.

It lasted 46 years. Could easily have been more.

Agree

still struggling with that Oklahoma "host" comment ...

feeling slightly sick

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 09:27

Or maybe Russia doesn't actually need to invade when it can just maintain a state of global instability, starting the odd skirmish, getting crazy people put in positions of power, distorting popular views through proliferation of fake news. By carefully cultivating fear and mistrust it can nudge other powers to do what it wanted all along or distract them with dead cats while it gets on with its own agenda. And by Russia we basically mean Putin who just wants to stay in power and maintain his cult of adoring followers.

Confucious ask:

If man resign from White House but President doesn't Tweet about it, did it really happen?

Waiting for the pouting post from Trump, complaining that the bad media had it in for Flynn and that he quit for the good of the country, noble gent that he WA, even though there was no need for him to. After all, Trump forgave him (note the contradiction) so any federal laws they say he broke are irrelevant anyway, because the president shouldn't be questioned. Ever. I reckon three tweets for him to get all that in, and then Miller will be on telly saying the same thing.

TheClaws · 14/02/2017 09:29

It has been quiet. But I'm still reading. What I'm concerned about in particular is the tendency to mirror people and events into comedy. It was okay to start with, but now? I think it the approach has lost its punch and lustre. Maybe others are feeling the same mental lassitude.

GingerIvy · 14/02/2017 09:29

WA = was

Comedy though is a very good weapon - Spitting Image is one such example. Sharp satire and nudging towards historic events can give people pause for thought.

Comedy can be serious IYSWIM

I also think people need comedy at times like this.

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 09:38

I do think people are getting exhausted by it all. It's just so much so fast. I am starting to feel a bit numb to be honest.

saffronwblue · 14/02/2017 09:41

We need comedy but some of the events and players are beyond satire as they are already so utterly ludicrous.
Agree with the fatigue.

It was Mark Cuban, that guy that actually didn't support Trump, who said that what Trump hates the most is to be made fun of.
Comedy at this stage pushes him to make mistakes and show his tiny hand sooner and more clearly.
It also highlights the problems with his administration better than any news media that are supposed to be more neutral and respectful.

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 09:46

What do you think "full courtesy" actually involves?

Lweji · 14/02/2017 09:46

Great clip.

I have a good rule of thumb that applies well to Trump and his administration.
Anything they accuse their opponents of, they are guilty of themselves, instead.
It has turned out to be true so far.

TheClaws · 14/02/2017 09:49

Absolutely merrymouse, they do need comedy - but I do think there is a point where it becomes not all that funny any more. And a time where the jokes start sounding a little more dangerous to make. Trivialising the situation and encouraging meme-makers to do the same.

Here is the text of the government response to the petition I received by email this morning for anyone who hadn't signed and is interested

"HM Government believes the President of the United States should be extended the full courtesy of a State Visit. We look forward to welcoming President Trump once dates and arrangements are finalised.

HM Government recognises the strong views expressed by the many signatories of this petition, but does not support this petition.

During her visit to the United States on 27 January 2017, the Prime Minister, on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, invited President Trump for a State Visit to the UK later this year. The invitation was accepted. This invitation reflects the importance of the relationship between the United States of America and the United Kingdom. At this stage, final dates have not yet been agreed for the State Visit.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office"

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 09:51

So that's us told then Hmm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2017 09:56

I'm astonished they responded before Monday's debate.

CycleOnTheLEFT · 14/02/2017 09:57

Sorry I've not been able to keep up with the thread over the last 24 hours, but what's going on with Trump's twitter? The most recent posts are clearly not in his usual style...

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 10:02

No you don't - you are dreading the prospect. At best it's going to be a massive embarrassment, at worst, depending on what Trump says and does it could be part of a major diplomatic incident. You are trying to work out how to ensure that Trump is chaperoned at all times, and that he doesn't say anything that hasn't been carefully scripted.
Who will be in charge of his phone?
