Unsurprisingly, The Handmaids Tale is leaping up the book charts...

I agree that ridicule is a useful even essential weapon, but I also think Cuss makes an important point
There was a 30 Rock episode about a terrible politician who the team satirised, and after initially being banned from doing so by his people, they were encouraged to as it humanised him and made people laugh and think he was just silly rather than dangerous

Part of me feels I am being played, why are they continuing with this ridiculous performance, the stupid tweets, the alternative facts.
Its all so very unsophisticated, so transparent, as if designed to pull the wool over the eyes of an uneducated populace.

It has to be a double bluff doesn't it

Trump is such a fucking joke

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2017 10:29

Just watched the SNL sketch and it did make me laugh. I share quim's slight ambivilence about whether it turns them into less threatening figures of fun rather than the truly horrifying people they are. I say this after hearing an interview with some of the people who made spitting image who worried that they and actually helped Thatcher (I think I have said this before).

However, at the same time I do think this is slightly different just because of how much it hurts trump's ego and how his hit backs make him look so weak. I also love seeing women getting such a spotlight in comedy and satire, which can still be a very male dominated area. It's great to see how Trump's misogyny can be used against him Grin

Beautiful new thread!

yeOldeTrout · 12/02/2017 10:40

I don't mind sympathy for Spicer. It would have been great if he waved the water pistol at press briefing like he wanted to (idea nixed by paranoid others). Spicer has been described as having the worst job in America. There's a lot of admiration for his bulldogness. Nobody thinks he believes what he's saying. He's only a messenger, ultimately. The vitriole should be levied at the decision makers (Unholy Trinity, etc).

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2017 10:42

I sort of lost track on the last thread as I was out yesterday, so not sure if this has been posted. It shows who was offered questions in the first free press briefings for Obama vs Trump. An interesting contrast.

merrymouse · 12/02/2017 10:47

I don't recall Thatcher ever complaining about Spitting Image. As far as I remember she just ignored it.

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2017 10:50

Any leader in a democracy should expect some form of less than flattering satire about them. Most just ignore and get on with their jobs like grown ups. The ones that don't tend to have something in common Hmm

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2017 10:51

Have we posted this thrilling tweet from Flotus? I'm wondering which values exactly she wants to empower the next generation with...

I think potentially some SNL sketches have made Conway look more competent than she is. However, since then alternative facts, Bowling Green, Ivanka plug etc. have punctured the idea that she is just an exasperated professional doing her job.

However, I think the power of satire shows is weakened in that the news moves so quickly that they can't dwell on particular topics without looking out of date.

Which values?
I think it's the v's
Vacant, vacuous, vain
Followed by flashy and trashy

Placemarking while I sign off a few new EOs. Let's hope nothing happens to anyone while I catch up.

I can't be the only one disappointed that we didn't get Rosie O'Donnell as Bannon last night?

CaveMum · 12/02/2017 11:28

Just been looking on Wikipedia at the history of Presidential Executive Orders.

Roosevelt holds the record with 3,522 during his almost 13 year term, though that covers WW2 so sort of understandable.

Obama clocked up 276 over his 8 year term (16 of which were enacted by the end of Feb 2009)

Trump is up to 12 in his first 3 weeks, so we'll have to see where he stands at the end of the month.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/02/2017 11:33

I enjoyed this story about a newspaper mistaking Baldwin's Trump for the real thing www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-38948265

Loving the SCROTUS acronym (just completely forgot the term 'acronym' and had to google "using letters for words" - too much Trump is making me thick Grin )

merrymouse · 12/02/2017 11:35

Wouldn't it have been better to post a picture where Melania was smiling and/or looking at Akie Abe?

I too find this especially pleasing, these misogynists totally over played their hands and have inadvertently fostered the successful expansion of women into male territory✊

OWN GOAL
Enjoy!
😂

yeOldeTrout · 12/02/2017 11:43

Problem with Conway is that her obvious parody is easily very stereotype misogynistic = Bubble-headed overly fashionable anorexic principle-less witch-like evil screechy fantasist lightweight blonde. I can see why SNL dodged that bullet. Maybe they could find a skinny guy to play her as someone who sold her soul to devil decades ago, I dunno. How many enemies does SNL want to risk making. Remember she was a key figure in Ted Cruz's failed campaign for nomination, she's a bit of a tart when it comes to political loyalty.

Funny how quiet Cruz has been about Prez Drumpf.

blueskyinmarch · 12/02/2017 11:46

I can’t get on to Twitter this morning. I think Trump has broken it!

'Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump
The crackdown on illegal criminals is merely the keeping of my campaign promise. Gang members, drug dealers & others are being removed!'

a tautologous tweet from scrotus, or is he making a cryptic reference to 'legal' criminals?Confused
