To think feeding 40 people for £50 is more than possible

I was planning to make a chilli con carne, curry, pulled pork, meatball pasta, carbonara in large pots.

Add sides of rice, garlic bread, potatoes, chips, pizza.

Snacks of crisps, nuts, quiche, cocktail cheese and pineapple, cruidetes with dip,

Large homemade cake

Different desserts.

My mum thinks this doesn't sound that interesting and I should be doing fancy canapés etc.

Caterers all wants £6 a head which I can't afford and don't need to ask I'm a good cook.

Am I being too ambitious?

What would you do to feed 40 people on £50?

The menu sounds weird, the timings are weird, the costings are from la La land

MagicChicken · 13/02/2017 12:06

I don't know why this is annoying me, but it really is.

I was getting annoyed yesterday and someone told me to calm down dear Grin

Today I'm feeling quite chilled about the whole very weird thing.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 12:06

Narky shoplifting? Grin

Must be. I dunno where she put the 4l tub of ice cream, but that must have been nippy.....

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 13/02/2017 12:06

See Narky I thought the total £8 was in reference to those though still doesn't make a dent in feeding 40 people!

Maybe there was a typo and Op was actually just feeding 4 extremely hungry people Wink

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 12:08

I thought the 8£ included the cakes and pies (apparently one can make 3 pear and almond pies for 3£!? With magical nuts presumably).

Even if not, I don't see how you could do all that for 8 pounds anyway?

EssentialHummus · 13/02/2017 12:10

The OP is Jesus AICM £5.

MagicChicken · 13/02/2017 12:11

It was £8 for this lot:

4 litre tub of ice cream.

I then put out chocolate sauce, marshmallows, chocolate raisins, smarties, strawberries and a big stack of homemade pancakes so people can assemble their own pancakes (this was a huge success)

Total: £8

How many eggs do you need to make a big stack of pancakes? Loads, I'd have thought. And it does seem rather odd to spend the bulk of the £8 on smarties and marshmallows etc, when you've only spent a fiver on the pork. Confused

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:12

3 pear and almond tarts for 3 pounds

With pears? And actual ground almonds? Wtf is the pastry made from? Lard?

dnamummy · 13/02/2017 12:12

Perhaps for her next event the OP could serve loaves and fishes!

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:13

The pancakes sound horribke sorry. They'd be the last thing I'd want after a long walk Confused

Well no me either but I think it might have been a case of if you want it badly enough you can make it happen/wish upon a star or whatever other gubbins!

I know this thread has annoyed some people but I find it hilarious. It's so odd!

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:14

It's one of the best threads I've read for ages

MagicChicken · 13/02/2017 12:15

It's strangely compelling isn't it Fred? Gawd knows how many hours of my life I've given it.

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:16

If it is true, maybe the OP is so keen on her position as Amazing Thrifty Cook that she's actually bulked everything out with her own money and store cupboard?

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:16

I knew I'd get loads of nasty comments and disbelief after posting the buffet and amounts.

Everything was lovely. Unless you were there you can't say any different. Just because something sounds horrid doesn't mean it was.

After years having to survive on next to nothing, I can make food at a very low cost. I know where to source the ingredients.

Enjoy the replies though 😂

MagicChicken I'm obsessed. Maybe as I do loads of food budgeting and cooling in RL

user1478860582 · 13/02/2017 12:17

I'm not sure MagicChicken should be hanging round this thread. She's risking life and limb!!

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:17

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 13/02/2017 12:17

V good dnamummy Grin

I'm off work with a high temperature, I wonder if that's why this thread is cracking me up so much.

FrogletinaBallerina · 13/02/2017 12:17

I've just seen the factory shop FB page and the bags of biscuits/cakes are Ikea blue bag sized. If they are £1, I need to make a trip!!

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 12:19

Well of course you get disbelief. Pics or it didn't happen!

(and if you could tell us how you managed to plan, shop from closed outlets and cook for 40 people, and have the event as well all in about 4 hours, we'd love to know. Just so we can try and do it too! Thanks)

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:19

So you have a special magical place where you can source excessively cheap ingredients? Why ask people who don't?

Please. Please please post the recipe and costings for the 1 pound pear and almond tarts I would seriously live it

Thingiebob · 13/02/2017 12:20

Totally happened. In her head.

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:20

frogletina the place is amazing! You won't get the IKEA blue bag size for £1. But I'd be surprised if the £1 bag has any less than 50 pieces of cake in each one. You're getting at least £15 worth of cake in a £1 bag.

It's a bit wonky but who cares.

No one would believe me if I told them that's what you can get for £1. But you can!!! I source all my ingredients from seconds shops and markets.
