To think feeding 40 people for £50 is more than possible

I was planning to make a chilli con carne, curry, pulled pork, meatball pasta, carbonara in large pots.

Add sides of rice, garlic bread, potatoes, chips, pizza.

Snacks of crisps, nuts, quiche, cocktail cheese and pineapple, cruidetes with dip,

Large homemade cake

Different desserts.

My mum thinks this doesn't sound that interesting and I should be doing fancy canapés etc.

Caterers all wants £6 a head which I can't afford and don't need to ask I'm a good cook.

Am I being too ambitious?

What would you do to feed 40 people on £50?

We are not allowed to call people out for trolling but I think it's fair play to politely question some posters who post embellished stories or who are trying to mislead people even if it's minor details like pretending you live in one place when you live somewhere else. OP could explain if she wanted.

The comments about the OP on thins thread are mostly humorous rather than nasty. I stuck up for the OP very early in the thread so I'm not feeling that sympathetic towards her now. Sad

I opened this thread thinking "350 replies? How??"

Well. That's how.

I've just been reading your other thread. You seem to have a very flexible relationship with finances/maths.

HeeHighls · 14/02/2017 18:08

I just urge caution that's all. Even trolls must have issues and indeed dreams, especially to be useful.
For some, these forums may be all the contact they have in the outside world.
Not everyone here is able bodied and earning a wage. Some I bet are confined to a bedroom and computer. Maybe in the bedroom next to the person they care for 24/7 for a pittance.

If they wish to fantasise, so be it. I just don't like to see them goaded over a menu. That's all it is, just a menu.

There have been some cruel threads, notably where posters even met the Troll. I don't see this as one of them.

I genuinely wanted that magical pear and almond tart recipe!

" I'm sorry that the news today upset you but to me, it's in really poor taste to lump in what happened to that poor woman with severe MH problems with someone like the OP who is clearly just being a bit daft online for the sake of it."
.....................................................
Who are we to judge? A bit daft, mentally ill or desperately lonely and wishing to be useful as the thread in question.

How do you know the deceased mother of five had mental problems? Seems she brought her children up OK.

Maybe she simply couldn't help seeing her future and her dreams falling away from her. Having to share her children possibly every other weekend with the other woman?

More sympathy please for women in that situation. It's worse than the father dying. It's agony for the mother and children over many years.

No, I've never been in that position and sorry for taking the thread off course.

I live reasonably near to Oldham and Park Cakes is famous for its scrummy bargain reject cakes. No idea about the rest of the buffet/thread validity, I couldn't be bothered getting as involved in it all as a few posters/troll hunters/judgey pants types have!

GinIsIn · 14/02/2017 18:42

With respect, she was obviously in an extremely dark place and clearly had mental health issues for her to feel that that was the only option available to her. People with MH problems are not incapable of bringing up children, and it is not any kind of insult or unsympathetic to suggest that someone was struggling with their mental health - it seems like this might not be a topic you know much about, and so perhaps this thread isn't the place to discuss it.

MsJamieFraser · 14/02/2017 19:16

You possibly could if your using cheap, processed and frozen food, I think the quality would be vile and it would be bland and tasteless.

Cary2012 · 14/02/2017 19:51

I am late to this thread because I have just cooked 40 portions of rump steak, thrice cooked chips, mange tout and cauli cheese for a few friends who were out for a stroll. Followed by raspberries with an elderflower foam and vanilla (homemade) ice cream. And a lavender shortbread. Washed down by lots of champers. Total cost: £24. I could have done it for twenty, but the price of caulis......Wink

Anyone remember the Shooting Stars 'Coldland' ad? This thread totally reminds me of it 😀
