To think feeding 40 people for £50 is more than possible

I was planning to make a chilli con carne, curry, pulled pork, meatball pasta, carbonara in large pots.

Add sides of rice, garlic bread, potatoes, chips, pizza.

Snacks of crisps, nuts, quiche, cocktail cheese and pineapple, cruidetes with dip,

Large homemade cake

Different desserts.

My mum thinks this doesn't sound that interesting and I should be doing fancy canapés etc.

Caterers all wants £6 a head which I can't afford and don't need to ask I'm a good cook.

Am I being too ambitious?

What would you do to feed 40 people on £50?

But how did you go from not having anything planned, let alone bought m, prepped and cooked, yesterday at midday to the event being OVER by 10am today???

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 12:22

No, I believe you can buy all that for a pound. I just don't believe you can buy all that for a pound from a shop that is closed. Smile

GinIsIn · 13/02/2017 12:22

Can you tell us where you sourced your magical watch from also, please? Because your timings are even more off than your coatings!

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:22

The almond tart had nothing in it that I hadn't used for something else.
So I was able to buy in bulk and use just a percentage of those ingredients to make those tarts.

15 worth of cake? So each piece is normally priced at 30p?

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:24

You bought bulk pears and grounds almonds? What else were they in?

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:24

....except park cakes is still open and in operation.

I will never ever know why people choose to spend their time arguing about stuff like this. Don't believe it? Don't believe it then!

I really really don't care. Just don't want others to be put off. Very pathetic to choose to spend
Your time changing the mind of someone who don't know.

Thankfully, I have more in my life than that. 😂

Have you seen the reviews on FB for that place? Crazy!

S 10 December 2016 at 09:49 They smash my hand in with some trays then they point and scream in my face and then sack me this place is a joke

And that is one of the nicer ones Shock

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:26

If you don't like the reviews for park cakes you best not shop at m and s as that's where he tuff goes.

And I think you will find those reviews in any factory unfortunately.

Yes, but isn't open on the day you said you bought cakes from there.

Was your veg chilli made of pears and almonds then?

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:26

I'm never going to stop going there. It's amazing!

Apparently so amazing that you burgle it when its closed!

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 13/02/2017 12:27

Ah come on Op, even knowing the cheapest places to shop this just doesn't work. I mean there are bargains to be had I'm sure but unless you've found a portal to an alternate universe you can't provide enough of the foods you've listed to feed that number of people.

And that's before one considers the amount of time needed for planning, purchasing, prepping and cooking and having the event and posting on MN...

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:27

I didn't specify any exact day that I went. Aww bless. This arguments not going well is it dinky

Never mind the pear tarts, I'm more interested in the quality and quantity of the chilli con carne which cost £10. Obviously there wasn't enough for 40, but you'd have to supply at least enough for 25 -30 people or so, to have a ladleful each. I make beef chilli and Bolognese from scratch all the time and I can't do a decent one for less than £10 and I'm making enough for about 6-8 portions max. Confused

How many chickens were there, and how big was the piece of pulled pork OP?

AndNowItsSeven · 13/02/2017 12:29

Op it wasn't open on Saturday afternoon though or Sunday.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 13/02/2017 12:30

I've got no skin left on my chin from all the rubbing...

AndNowItsSeven · 13/02/2017 12:30

This thread bothers me because people look to thread likes this when struggling to feed there families.
They will then either feel disillusioned or inadequate.

GinIsIn · 13/02/2017 12:30

Except you posted yesterday at 00:28 saying you hadn't been yet...

To think feeding 40 people for £50 is more than possible
BeIIatrixLeStrange · 13/02/2017 12:31

I don't understand the point of this thread.

  1. Am I being unreasonable to think I can feed 40 people for £50?
  2. I already know I am not as I have priced the shopping up, as I am quite good at these things
  3. Rest of the thread bragging about what a good cook / resourceful woman I am, and wondering why I get my head bitten off by a few

Ever heard of humble bragging?

Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:32

Maybe it's a weird ad for Park Cakes

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 12:32

How many days are there between midnight saturday and monday morning in your universe?

I'm not arguing with you, I would truly love to know how this was done. I love bargain tips Smile

user1486841477 · 13/02/2017 12:34

This is too funny 😂

OP posts:
Freddorika · 13/02/2017 12:34

Nice bargain tip people would cost it out. I am Shock at creating pear and almond tarts out of stuff you had leftover from some tub else. Something else you were making for someone else?
