To think feeding 40 people for £50 is more than possible

I was planning to make a chilli con carne, curry, pulled pork, meatball pasta, carbonara in large pots.

Add sides of rice, garlic bread, potatoes, chips, pizza.

Snacks of crisps, nuts, quiche, cocktail cheese and pineapple, cruidetes with dip,

Large homemade cake

Different desserts.

My mum thinks this doesn't sound that interesting and I should be doing fancy canapés etc.

Caterers all wants £6 a head which I can't afford and don't need to ask I'm a good cook.

Am I being too ambitious?

What would you do to feed 40 people on £50?

I wonder where when the OP is? Possibly 2023.

Artandco · 13/02/2017 15:00

I must be such a crap cook, takes me about 20 mins to make some pancakes for 4 people.

user1478860582 · 13/02/2017 15:00

I imagine the OP is currently taking calls from UN on how to stave off various famines.

BeIIatrixLeStrange · 13/02/2017 15:10

ROFL you really have a way with words User

PerspicaciaTick · 13/02/2017 15:37

The only explanation is that the OP is "accidentally" failing to include all her purchases.

Take the desserts - she spent £8 in total. of which £5 were spent on bargainous cakes. She doesn't give a price for the 4 litres of icecream, but I don't imagine it was much less £1. So she has £2 left with which she buys strawberries (out of season), chocolate covered raisins, marshmallows, sauce and smarties for 40 people. Plus cartons of eggs and the milk and the flour.

Then the starters...soup is priced, but the rolls (presumably 40 of them) and the cheese and chutney aren't priced, so presumably free?

Either she is failing to cost stuff she already had on, or people have donated stuff whch she hasn't priced, or she didn't cater for 40 people and the first 8 people got all the choice.

Has anyone warned the rest of the universe about the huge rip you just put in the space time continuum?

NoelHeadbands · 13/02/2017 15:39

What a thing to tell porkies about Grin there's nowt as queer as folk

MagicChicken · 13/02/2017 16:08

That would be pulled porkies Noel.

SolomanDaisy · 13/02/2017 16:09

Advance search reveals an on going problem with consistency. And that she's the poster who keeps posting about the former colleague she's obsessed with.

GinIsIn · 13/02/2017 16:14

To be fair if you can time travel then you probably can live in both oldham and Chester at the same time.....

SolomanDaisy · 13/02/2017 16:38

Well she's simultaneously a very attractive model with lucrative work who has been single her whole life and an unemployed single mother with a wonderful new boyfriend. So perhaps she lives one of those lives in Chester and the other in Oldham.

DubiousCredentials · 13/02/2017 16:53

pulled porkies Grin

Who knew a food thread would be so entertaining.

ReapAndSow · 13/02/2017 16:59

Mumsnet is bonkers sometimes 😂

PovertyJetset · 13/02/2017 17:31

Omg this thread has been so entertaining!

I went to a laid on lunch yesterday afternoon. There was a rank chilli with a thick layer or fat across the top and the meat was one or two steps away from dog food. That's all I dared, the rest of the stuff was equally as rough.

Bashed up cakes were ok, but tiny and they ran out.

How bizarre Confused

AndNowItsSeven · 13/02/2017 17:37

And also a social worker.

madmomma · 13/02/2017 18:10

This thread should be in classics. But seriously I've had so many good ideas for buffets now!

Grin

Brilliant

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 13/02/2017 18:51

OP I don't know why you asked for any advice about your catering or social working location.

I am not going to post on any of your threads from now on. Waste of my time.

BriefParanoidNameChange · 13/02/2017 19:16

Hope that's an exceedingly cheap, reject Biscuit clementine

Lebranic · 13/02/2017 19:16

Loved this thread. Do another OP. Also change your name to timewarp buffeter

Liiinoo · 13/02/2017 19:24

OP has failed to mention that while her pulled pork was slowcooking for the customary 4+ hours she ran up a couture dress out of a pair of old curtains.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 13/02/2017 19:26

40 couture dresses that is, 20 from each curtain Wink

Whatsername17 · 13/02/2017 19:28

Whenever I cater for a large party I always do jacket potatos and chilli or cheese and beans for veggies. It is so cheap and easy. A sack of potatos costs £5 from our local farm shop. I always serve it with salad. Nibbles to start are usually crisps and dip.
