Yesterday came home to find a bit of folded-up paper wedged in a crack in the fence wall bit (pavement goes right past it). Opened it up to find 2x2p coins inside unrecognisable writing - see pic!

Ooh, I love a mystery? Why not scan it and send to the British Library to see if they can shed light on it. It could be another alphabet.

Rabbit12345 · 12/02/2017 18:35

Coincided with lunar eclipse/snow moon and comet so possibly a spell and like pp said a script relative to the caster of the spell.

Copper is supposed to expel negative energy I think.

I actually have no idea but also placemarking!

Ruthie2k · 12/02/2017 18:36

What a great thread, I am intrigued.

Tiger44 · 12/02/2017 18:37

Haven't read all of the thread (19 pages!!) Bit is there any chance it is upside down? It looks like it is written from right to left (or left to right if it is upside down) but doesn't look like any languages that are written that way. Also every single line has the same letter (p or a d if upside down) on the right hand side. Could it be some sort of poem?

DagenhamRoundhouse · 12/02/2017 18:37

Take it to your local cop shop and see what they have to say.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 12/02/2017 18:38

Do you think this might be something to do with geocaching? But then, they usually hide or bury the booty don't they? It's the two 2p pieces that intrigue me.

Anyway, worst the police can do is laugh and send you packing. But there might be other people who've had this too. Nothing to lose.

not hoodoo, that uses text from the bible (the book of psalms) and usually has something of the person writing such as blood/semen/nail clipping.
are the railings iron? that is also a protection metal.

PlugUgly · 12/02/2017 18:48

Looks like the old fashioned shorthand that secretaries used to have to be proficient in , (as in Pitmans Shorthand)

AlyHughes86 · 12/02/2017 18:49

Fascinating! I wonder if you could find a linguist in your area...

dansmum · 12/02/2017 18:49

Call 101 and report it to the police. Could be someone with mental issues in crisis who needs help..or something else. Either way, let them know.

brooklyn66 · 12/02/2017 18:50

saudade This is the first non sexual thread that's got DH interested in mumsnet. He's been holding the tablet against the mirror for ages, convinced it's upside down mirror writing. Being technologically impaired he has no idea how to turn off the screen rotation! At least it's keeping him entertained. Cheers OP wink

Haha bless him!

  • AliceInUnderpants OP one of your links on reddit has a user saying they've seen this before, and I notice you've removed the information from the post?*

Eh? Not sure what you mean, I haven't removed anything. That user didn't respond when I asked where else they'd seen it.
I posted it in two places on Reddit and one got locked: www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/5teecq/what_is_this_writing_found_wrapped_around_coins/

and here has the most comments but nothing convincing especially considering they think it's really unusual paper Hmm
www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/5tdia7/is_this_a_language/

And to recap, the full pictures are here
imgur.com/a/VRDYu
imgur.com/a/7g4al

(think that second picture is upside down).
Sorry to disappoint you all but nothing to update really.

Hmm, I wondered why that thread was locked, V odd.

ArseyTussle · 12/02/2017 19:01

I moved into a small gate lodge down a private road once, and we found Blair Witch style twig sculptures on the porch the day we moved in. Scary.

Did that poster with the illegible Christmas card ever find out what the name was?

pleaselookafterthisbear · 12/02/2017 19:03

I have never posted before but have to now because I seem to know the answer to this, having come across two different threads on the same subject - it's a very strange Mumsnet coincidence if real...! There was a post on here the other day by someone bemoaning their own carelessness ('AIBU to be sick of being like this' or something along those lines). The poster said she had taken the time to write out her shopping list in code because she was embarrassed by all the crappy food she was buying, and had wrapped it around coins for the trolley, then forgotten it all when she stuffed it in a wall while she tied her laces. So this is it, right? And it has now been found by another Mumsnet poster, if this is all to be believed..?

SaudadeObama · 12/02/2017 19:05

ArseyTussle we used to make twig dolls when we went camping, my kids would share them with other kids and play with them, some kids would take them home.

pleaselookafterthisbear · 12/02/2017 19:08

Urm....that was a joke!

Sl1nkyMalinki · 12/02/2017 19:13

I have no idea, but having just read the whole thread I'm really intruiged! Shameless place mark Smile

WyfOfBathe · 12/02/2017 19:13

Please that other thread was set up after this one as a joke Grin

pleaselookafterthisbear · 12/02/2017 19:15

😳😳😳

ToDuk · 12/02/2017 19:16

No idea but I'm hooked.

pleaselookafterthisbear · 12/02/2017 19:16

Back to lurking around silently for me, then.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 12/02/2017 19:17

pleaselookafterthisbear did you ever see that fascinating documentary about the swiss spaghetti harvest? Grin

DipsyLaLa22 · 12/02/2017 19:18

I think it's from a geocache? Download the app (its free) and see if there is one listed near your house?
