This article on the dangers of legislating against fake news sites in the Washington post is a must-read, I think.

It points out that once you make governments the arbiters of what counts as truth versus falsehood, you leave yourself at the mercy of future regime changes which may use that legislation to suppress legitimate journalism.

Oh Hell yes his reimbursement for security at Mar a Lago is bigglyer. Way yuger.

The President's ANNUAL salary is $400,000, $50,000 expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment. That's a 'measly' $569,000.00 per annum. A drop in the bucket to Trump's earnings. That's why it was such a joke when he said he'd 'forego' it. He knew he'd make at least 10 x that in reimbursements at his various hotel and resort 'properties'.

The idea of an 'other' White House isn't a new one. Nixon had one, FDR, JFK had them, among others. It's just that those were private residences and those Presidents were NOT reimbursed for their security details rooms and board by way of charging for lodging and meals.

thickgit · 11/02/2017 18:46

Trump's handshakes (the pullback ones) are so unbelievably aggressive that I'm wondering whether they are edited to look like he's giving a real hard pull. It's bloody violent! They can't be real. . . Can they?

amispartacus · 11/02/2017 18:51

Fake news is one thing.
I think the biggest danger is manipulation. When national media groups only repeat positives about a story and negatives about another story.

Manipulation is so easy. And so dangerous.

I think the biggest danger is manipulation. When national media groups only repeat positives about a story and negatives about another story.

Manipulation is so easy. And so dangerous.

Its funny that "fake news" has suddenly become a thing and apparently is only applied to the right, lets look at it objectively:

All media:

decide which stories to report

decide which 'facts' to include within that story

decide which interviewees to comment on these facts, and what questions to ask them

put their own spin the story

muddy the waters between opinion and comment and present as 'news'

Media mediate, they are a filter between us and what's happening. We give them more credibility than we should because we tend to select outlets that mirror our own prejudices.

You can whine about me being back after I have gone again..

I'm undecided about Russell Brand but this video is interesting. He talks about how the war on terror is never ending and how Trump might actually be a good thing as it will bring it to a crisis point....

It strikes me, ami, that EP himself is probably quite extraordinarily easy to manipulate. He seems to have just a few trigger points either way.........

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 19:28

There are people left behind. How do you bring back jobs in a global economy where trade is complicated, labour is cheap elsewhere, people are getting older, jobs are being automated and the rest of the world is catching up?

The weird thing is that the story of the United States is of people taking the advice to 'get on your bike' to completely ludicrous extremes. Imagine getting on a boat and sailing across the Atlantic to America before phones, electricity or modern medicine, whether that meant arriving at Ellis Island or Cape Cod?

Imagine travelling from the East Coast to California using only horse power?

Somehow it seems stranger when Americans are frightened of change.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 11/02/2017 19:29

Lurker - all media filter, yes, but not all of them tell outright lies that are patently untrue and can be easily shown to be patently untrue.

It points out that once you make governments the arbiters of what counts as truth versus falsehood, you leave yourself at the mercy of future regime changes which may use that legislation to suppress legitimate journalism.

I am very concerned by the calls of some to somehow block sites seen as proliferating take news. As you say someone has to then decide what is fake news, where does it stop just being an acceptable bias or political opinion as opposed to outright lies? We could so easily get to a point where suddenly the guardian or even New Scientist are blocked because the current arbiter of what is fake news decides that the guardian has an unacceptable liberal bias and the New Scientist does not confirm creationist views.

We must educate people on how to navigate the information available to them on line and be ready to fact check or got be alternative options, but I am very wary of outright censorship. It can so easily be miss used.

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 19:41

and apparently is only applied to the right

Not really, Trump is quite happy to apply the term to anything he doesn't like - polls, media, facts.

However, if you use 'fake news' only to mean people who deliberately set up fake news sites for money, Jestin Coler claims that democrats just aren't profitable. It's true that fake news stories about Trump have circulated, but they get skewered far more quickly.

SMITH: And Jestin says, at least in the beginning, he was an equal opportunity prankster. He tried to peddle fake news for lefties, he says, making up vile things about conservatives.

COLER: It just has never worked. It never takes off. People will always say - you know, you'll get de-bunked, like, within the first two comments and then the whole thing just kind of fizzles out.

www.npr.org/templates/transcript/transcript.php?storyId=504155809

Of course all media filters news, but there is a difference between bias and making things up.

BiglyBadgers · 11/02/2017 19:42

Sorry for all the errors in that post...I'm sure you get the general gist. It has been a long and trying day Grin

Justanotherlurker · 11/02/2017 19:44

all media filter, yes, but not all of them tell outright lies that are patently untrue and can be easily shown to be patently untrue.

True, and however you want to spin it, it isn't a left "good", right "bad" issue, is my point

Pres. Trump expresses “full confidence” in adviser Mike Flynn amid reports Flynn discussed US sanctions with Russia cbsn.ws/2keDE0T

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 11/02/2017 20:00

Yes - Trump expresses full confidence in Flynn doesn't surprise me. I've seen a lot of coverage saying "well, either Pence knew as well in which case they're both for the chop, or Pence didn't know, in which case at least we get rid of Flynn" - all of which I think missed the obvious third option which was that Trump simply turned round and said (effectively) "like I give a shit..."

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 20:02

Or Trump can't risk getting rid of Flynn, because Flynn has loads of info.
