Exasperation and a sense of 'What else did I expect', I guess. Then anger.

A friend of ours was saying that the problem with us Democrats is that we are much more Ghandi than we are Guevara. And he's right. We're about peaceable change not militant action. Passive resistance, not guerrilla warfare. But we are, for the first time, facing a President/Govt that doesn't care what we think, doesn't care how the people hurt, doesn't care what we bring to the attention of the World through peaceful protest. And that's what is so scary. The tools that we've used successfully in the past just aren't going to work with Trump and Co. And their 1984 disinformation tactics are working on a great many people. And unlike the war protests of the past, there are not sons and daughters coming home in boxes from wars for oil to rile up that part of the population. His 'fan base' just isn't hurting, and won't ever hurt, from the things he's doing. And as long as his fan base isn't discommoded, they will never give a rat's ass about their own neighbour, let alone the 'other' that are being targeted.

Armed insurrection? We aren't 'built for it', it's not our mindset. But TBH, I will admit that I know some Dems that are glad they have firearms. And some that are beginning to feel they have need of them. Frightening, isn't it?

cozietoesie · 11/02/2017 18:18

Oh Yes. It surely is.

Do you have any friends in Texas?

AcrossthePond55 · 11/02/2017 18:18

And I misspelled Gandhi Blush

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 18:19

It seems that one of the problems democrats have is a basic respect for government and institutions . I get the impression that the republicans can get away with more because 'taking down the federal government' plays well with their supporters.

cozietoesie · 11/02/2017 18:20

I didn't even notice! Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 11/02/2017 18:21

I do, Cozie. They both feel that Trump is 'right'. One strictly on being anti-choice and pro-'Christian values', the other strictly on gun rights and immigration. Neither gives a rat's ass about social issues or the less fortunate.

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 18:23

One strictly on being anti-choice and pro-'Christian values

Trump pro Christian values - yeah right! He's also clearly only pro life when it suits him.

cozietoesie · 11/02/2017 18:26

Democrats are a 'slower burn', I think, merry. That doesn't mean that they don't rile of course.

I have many friends and acquaintances from the South, Across, and I've always been given the impression - strongly in some cases - that the scars of the Confederacy have never healed. They just plain don't like the North.

I think it's more about respect for reason and compassion as part of governance rather than the govt and institutions themselves. They are instruments of the people, by the people, and for the people for the greater good of all if I may paraphrase.

I get the impression that the republicans can get away with more because 'taking down the federal government' plays well with their supporters.

Absolutely. I once read an essay on the effect of the 'wild west frontier' period of American history on the greater American psyche. The GOP plays to that mentality very well. It's almost amusing to see that it's one of the oldest institutions itself that's telling the people not to trust any institution, iyswim.

amispartacus · 11/02/2017 18:28

Gandhi 'tactics' are a fascinating discussion. Making authority look heavy handed and losing public opinion back home. The history of Gandhi, Independence and the subsequent separation are a fascinating insight into authority.

Churchill didn't like Gandhi.

"It is alarming and nauseating to see Mr Gandhi, a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir of a type well known in the east, striding half naked up the steps of the viceregal palace, while he is still organising and conducting a campaign of civil disobedience, to parlay on equal terms with the representative of the Emperor-King"

It must have taken a lot of guts to stand up for what's right and for what you believe is right.

The thing about standing up for what is right is people then attack you for not standing up for other things.

Personally, I'd rather stand up for something than do nothing.

Most of my American family/friends have firearms, including some that I seriously think should not have them. Hmm They are either hunters or law enforcement (or both). I don't see any of them using them in an uprising though. Protection, yeah.

I wonder what would happen if we had 2 zones - 1 zone for people who are Trump supporters and another for non Trump supporters.

But that way madness lies...separation of countries by political views. We know what happens next.

I think it's true to an extent Cozie, more so in the boomer generation and older. But there is still a deal of resentment about how the South was treated during Reconstruction and how Southern Poverty has been treated by the Federal Govt at times.

I think the fact that the Nation, and the World, is much more 'global' now. I think it's harder for younger people to hold on to old, tired resentments and stereotypes when they are in such communication with people from other areas/nations via the internet. Their 'world' is much bigger than ours was at their age.

AcrossthePond55 · 11/02/2017 18:34

Personally, I'd rather stand up for something than do nothing.

What's that saying? "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything"? Very true.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 18:35

His 'fan base' just isn't hurting, and won't ever hurt, from the things he's doing.

I don't know if they won't ever.
If prices go up, banks fail people again, and there's another financial crisis, they will.

BTW, is it fair to summarise that, although Trump is not taking a salary, whatever security is paying him at Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago could be way yuger, more bigly, than whatever salary he would have?

cozietoesie · 11/02/2017 18:35

Just say 'Remember the Alamo' to your Texan friends and watch their backs stiffen. It hasn't gone away as far as you think, I reckon. Wink

AcrossthePond55 · 11/02/2017 18:37

I agree 'for now' Ginger, about the firearms simply for protection or hunting. And I hope it stays that way.

It's so similar to Brexit.

There are people left behind. How do you bring back jobs in a global economy where trade is complicated, labour is cheap elsewhere, people are getting older, jobs are being automated and the rest of the world is catching up?

How do you provide decent services in education, health care and social care? Provide infrastructure. Enable an economy to grow. Work with your neighbours?

Will those people 'left behind' catch up?
