Sorry if this has already been linked.

Permanent resident sentenced to 8 years in prison and deportation for illegal voting.

No reason to suspect that she was anything other than confused about whether she could vote.

Here are 5 disturbing new revelations about what’s really going on inside the chaotic Trump White House ow.ly/If63308UwbQ

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 17:32

From the New York Times story above:

"Far-right websites have seized on Ms. Ortega’s conviction as proof that Mr. Trump is right about rampant fraud and efforts by Democrats to steal the November election.

There is, however, at least one flaw in that story: Ms. Ortega was a registered Republican.

“She voted for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama in the 2012 election. In 2014 she voted for our current attorney general, Ken Paxton,” Mr. Birdsall said. “And guess what? He’s the one responsible for prosecuting her.”"

You couldn't make it up.

tbf, unemployment benefits in the USA are quite limited, they only pay out for a short spell. Total costs about $100 billion a yr.

Nobody can give reliable numbers on Melania's security costs, but needs to cost > $200million PER DAY to get to that $100 bn/yr. The usual claim levied at Melania (not proven) is more like up to $300 mn per year.

Re: Ortega. This is what it'll take to get his supporters thinking. When his ill-conceived so-called policies starts targeting them and no jobs are created out of thin air to make them all great again.

I reckon California would be best served by getting out while it can. He's going to bankrupt America. (At the least.)

Many/most people are genuinely clueless about money, I fear.

AcrossthePond55 · 11/02/2017 17:59

This is OTT but,

California's economy is ranked sixth largest in the world. We have our own ports, we produce almost half of the fruits, nuts, and veg for the entire nation. We also have a thriving dairy and beef cattle industry. We also have a great deal of oil offshore as well as wind and solar farms. And a thriving tech and manufacturing business base . Our population is 38.8 million, about half the population and about twice the size of the UK (just for general reference). We are the 46th state least dependent on federal money. California is in a much different position than the Southern States when they seceded. They were almost a completely agrarian economy and had to import massive amounts of raw materials and manufactured goods. And they had to fund a war, something I hope we'd be able to avoid!

I think we could succeed as a country very well, but it would be a great upheaval. Federal jobs would be lost or forced to relocate (mine would have been included!), programs defunded, there are federal lands that would have had to be dealt with. I don't even know how that would work. Would we just 'claim' Yosemite et al as now belonging to the Republic of California or would we have to make some type of payment for federally owned lands and buildings. Bottom line is I expect it's much more complicated and expensive that we can realize.

But as I say, it won't happen. The Constitution makes no provision, creates no 'path', for a state to peacefully secede from the Union. And this has been interpreted to mean that it cannot be done without amending the Constitution to create a way to secede.

If any of you are interested, here's a good article

Always a good weekend read, Gail Collins of @nytimes looks at how American taxpayers are paying for the Trumps.

By the way, Across. What would be the reaction/effect if EP threatened to withdraw federal funding? (In your own view, of course.)
