I certainly believe that people would travel across state to protest, and I accept the argument that that might not always be appropriate, but the idea that they would need to be paid is ridiculous.

From Wikipedia:

Today, the Secret Service is authorized by law to protect:

The President, the Vice President (or other officer next in the order of succession to the Office of President, should the Vice Presidency be vacant), the President-elect, and the Vice President-elect

The immediate families of the above individuals

Former Presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes except when the spouse divorces or remarries, under the Former Presidents Act. From 1997 until 2013, legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former Presidents and their spouses to a period of 10 years from the date the former President leaves office. President Barack Obama signed legislation reversing this limit and reinstating lifetime protection on January 10, 2013.

The widow or widower of a former President who dies in office or dies within a year of leaving office for a period of one year after the President's death (the Secretary of Homeland Security can extend the protection time)

Children of former Presidents until age 16 or 10 years after the presidency

Former Vice Presidents, their spouses, and their children under 16 years of age, for up to 6 months from the date the former Vice President leaves office (the Secretary of Homeland Security can extend the protection time)

Visiting heads of states or governments and their spouses traveling with them

Other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States and official representatives of the United States performing special missions abroad, as directed by the President

Major presidential and vice presidential candidates

The spouses of major presidential and vice presidential candidates (within 120 days of a general presidential election)

Other individuals as designated per executive order of the President
National Special Security Events, when designated as such by the Secretary of Homeland Security

Any of these individuals may decline Secret Service protection, except the President, the Vice President (or other officer next in the order of succession to the Office of President), the President-elect, and the Vice President–elect.

Trump certainly hired extras to cheer for him when he announced he was running for president. Apparently there was a dispute over their payment.

No issue with security costs for the Office of President. TSSDNCOP and all that. Lots of cars needed.

But...you know how the EU gets the piss taken out of it because of the cost of moving between Brussels and Strasbourg regularly.

Just get a UK Trump supporter to get all agitated about that - and then casually ask them how they feel about the cost of Trump decamping to Florida with his security etc every weekend....

The size and cost of the President's security detail is just insane - why does he need so many?!

Why does all this matter?

This is why:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/10/oxford-university-circulate-criminalised-image-black-man

CCTV images pick up a picture of someone who shouldn't have been in a part of a college. Security tweets out image of man telling them to be vigilant.

Fair enough. BUT people then point out that this college has never tweeted out images of other people who have been in the wrong place of the college.

People are being conditioned to be afraid. To be fearful. To be suspicious. To fear 'other'.

This is why it matters.

Wars happen in countries like Iraq and Syria
People flee countries
They become refugees.

Who'd have thought so many refugees would come from places like Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Sudan? There's definitely something suspicious about that. Where are all the Swedish refugees eh? What's happening to them? And the Swiss, Australian and Portuguese ones? The Donald is definitely onto something, it's the dishonest and corrupt media covering up the real refugee crisis.

amispartacus · 11/02/2017 12:32

"A staggering 77 percent of the 1,100 refugees let in since Judge James L. Robart’s Feb. 3 order have been from the seven suspect countries. Nearly a third are from Syria alone — a country that President Trump has ordered be banned altogether from the refugee program. Another 21 percent are from Iraq. By contrast, in the two weeks before Judge Robart’s order, just 9 percent of refugees were from Syria and 6 percent were from Iraq"

I got this - it's a clever way of numbers.

In the first bit, you have the number of people and the percentage
In the second bit, you have the percentage but no comparable number.

How MANY refugees were let in in the 2 week period before? We don't know - just the percentage who were from Syria.

It could be that refugee agencies were prioritising people from the countries on the list when they weren't before that.

Statistics, statistics - that's why raw data is needed.

Good point NotDavid! Although we have guns in Finland too but you can't just carry them around like in the US. Been trying to find out what security the President has and found out his favourite hobby is rollerblading, which he does in all the countries he visits so now I'm imagining a couple of bodyguards rollerblading after him Grin
