One of the best ways to influence people is to nudge them. I think that if you are too 'overt' in your message, you turn people off who are already supporters. Shouting, ranting - and yes, even facts, don't persuade people.

But nudging, creating uncertainty, making a few hints....just enough to allow people to question.

People dig in their heels a lot about issues. Persuading them to change their mind is very hard work.

People may know the 'nudge' unit.

You'll have seen it in action. Send a message out. '80% of people in your town pay less than £100 a month for gas and electricity. You pay £140. Do you want to be one of those who pay less than £100'

80% of people reuse their towels rather than put them for washing (seen in hotels)

Message - be like us. Not them. Be one of the group.

Did you know that over 90% of people approve of this thread?

You are Sean Spicer / Kellyanne. Spin it so Trump looks good if he issues a new executive order.

Who's my target audience?

More delays at the airport? More time to buy Ivanka's products!

No?

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 09:10

I agree ami.

My impression is that this was a very unpleasant hard election and either candidate would have faced huge criticism on winning. Many people, rightly or wrongly, felt they had to hold their nose to vote.

In those circumstances, can you afford to look this incompetent?

I suppose, though, the reality is that while he holds on to his key supporters he is as likely to be removed from office as Corbyn was in September.

amispartacus · 11/02/2017 09:17

The lawyer on R4 this morning - who was supportive of the order (you can tell by the words used) said that because the ban was for 90 days, it was pointless going to the court - so this would show that Trump was reflecting and being practical...(or words to that effect)

I wrote long post which I lost, argh.

btw, Mrs. Hudson is on Saturday Live, if you want to hear how much the real actress is like her!!

Okay spin:

Easy thing is ignore the immigration ban & go straight for proclaiming what the extreme vetting measures will be.

Otherwise,
Fewer countries? "More specific!"
Make it longer, 120 days at least not just 90 ("bigger, better!")
Remove legal residents & VISA holders from the ban
Rephrase it, further from "ban" label
Reveal some intelligence info about plots done by folk from the designated countries (provide some evidence-based rationale, weakens the legal arguments against)
Add a non-Muslim country or 2, North Korea is obvious one.

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 09:25

I think that's why they put it as "temporary" and "90 days" ... but were planning on it being permanent all along. I think that was a ploy to get it in place and get people used to it.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 09:26

A side note: on the POTUS account he shows the long handshake with the Japanese PM where he almost yanks the poor man out of his chair.
Which is why he was shuffling back uncomfortably.

Also, there's a new weekly address.

He starts with the states that have suffered bad, bad weather. At the end he says "we'll take care of them". Normally fine, but it sounded like a Mafia warning. Shock
It's on the his facebook page.

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 09:29

This is a huge concern of mine. He's undermining the news media and telling people they are "fake news" and that the only truth is from him. I'd like to think that when he gets out the cups of koolaid, people will stop and think. Doubt it. Hmm

Feds, Trump attorneys wrangle over president’s D.C. hotel lease

Ah,, Chaffetz finally realised after a town hall meeting where there was not one person in support of him that he might actually be voted out by next year so perhaps he should do his job if he wants to keep it. Or at least make the appearance of doing his job.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 09:32

KA spin:

Never mind what it says on the ban, or how it's applied, or even how useful it will be, you have to look at the intention and the intention is that there are no extreme Muslim terrorist attacks in the US. If you're against the ban, you're in favour of extremist Muslim terrorism in the US.
And against Ivanka's business.

(Sad thing is she will probably use this "reasoning")

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 09:33

We're due a tweet any time now..... what's today's rubbish??

Dreading Monday. Feel like this is the calm before the storm.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 09:37

He was busy reading Bannon's weekly address

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/02/2017 09:40

I would hope that Courts would be asking for evidence as to what had been done to make vetting more secure since the ban was implemented. After all, whether or not the ban is actually in place, supposedly the point of it was to give them time to 'figure things out'. They should be asking for evidence of the figurings that have happened so far.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 09:45

But what the court said was that this ban was in relation to countries for which there was no evidence of a risk for the US.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/02/2017 09:46

Why can't his wife and daughter fly to Washington DC each weekend? The mind boggles. Nice house, nice garden costs millions less that everyone going to Florida.

Perhaps he has a special machine in Florida that maintains his vaguely human like form. If he doesn't plug in, he will fully transform into the nasty alien life form that he really is.

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 09:47

In that article, he talks about "we may have to defund California..." DEFUND a state?!?! Who even contemplates that??? Loon.

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 09:48

Kitten Exactly. There's no reason he has to go to the expense of going to Florida each weekend - well, except that his hotel gets LOTS of money from the government for doing so.

Lweji · 11/02/2017 09:54

What's funny about "defunding" California is that "In fact, Californians send more tax dollars to the federal government each year than the state gets back from the federal government."

Unless it suits him for California to secede. Which is not likely, but you never know if things really get worse.

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 09:55

Apparently he isn't charging Japanese PM for his room. (Although presumably is charging for other expenses). However, how much would it cost to get that much international publicity?

merrymouse · 11/02/2017 09:57

How will republicans feel if he starts trying to push around individual states? - I seem to remember that historically 'states' rights' have been quite a contentious issue in the US...

GingerIvy · 11/02/2017 10:03

Lweji There's already been talk of it. California seceding, I mean.

merrymouse it's free publicity. And he's charging the government for the rooms for the secret service, cabinet, etc. Plus whatever else is paid for there - drinks, food, etc. All charged to the government. (with inflated prices, I imagine)

NotDavidTennant · 11/02/2017 10:05

As long as he's only pushing around Democrat-supporting states like California then I doubt they will mind too much.

Trump doesn't have the military support he thinks he does. Add these to the men he is endangering overseas with the ban, those that are worried his inept dealings with other countries will start a war.....
