AIBU to bag up cereal with pre-portioned sugar to stop the kids wasting it?

I mean a sandwich bag of cereal with another little bag of sugar inside? Currently I'm scraping glued on cereal and sugar off the bottoms of bowls every day! Kids are 7, 10 and 14

Caster sugar on weetabix, surely?
No gritty bits.

AnaisB · 10/02/2017 17:41

Chocolate Weetabix? It's amazing and no faff.

BillSykesDog · 10/02/2017 17:45

A "sweet"? Now that is 1970s

Hatemylifenow · 10/02/2017 17:46

I thought saying "sweet" instead of pudding or dessert was a Suffolk thing. All DH's family say it.

OwlinaTree · 10/02/2017 17:47

*We set up breakfast the night before.
Everyone's breakfast is poured into bowls with a side plate over the top of it.

This isn't done for reasons of portion control, but you could do it for that reason?

(Ours only have a choice of either weetabix or porridge though which makes things easier)*

Bet that porridge is cold by the morning Grin

It was what the Hyacinth Buckets of the world used to call puddings in the 70s before they said pardon and left the lounge to go to the toilet and rearrange their loo roll cover dollies.

Do you remember them? They were great. Like a big sindy doll to hide your bog roll.

''Refined sugar is devoid of all nutrients. Typically, white sugar is made of pure carbohydrates. Today, it is common knowledge that refined white sugar has devastating affects on the body and health in general. Besides being a certain way to elevate blood sugar levels, unrefined white sugar is considered to be; "empty calories" as it offers no nutritional substance whatsoever.''

I'm finding it strange that some people seem to be thinking white sugar is an equal alternative to unrefined sugars. (Not talking about brown sugar you find in supermarket as that's still refined)

Unrefined have better GI rating too.

difficultyear · 10/02/2017 17:54

''Similar to the contrast between whole and refined grains, unrefined natural sweeteners like maple syrup contain higher levels of beneficial nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals than white table sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It's also why we see the many health benefitsof raw honey.''

Hatemylifenow · 10/02/2017 17:56

What are the health benefits of raw honey?

MichaelJacksonsGlove · 10/02/2017 17:58

I used to do this when I calorie counted but I used tubs not bags so they can be refilled without waste. So no I don't think it's weird at all and actually considering doing it again for the kids.

MumBod · 10/02/2017 17:59

Buy those little individual cereal boxes and nick some sugar sachets.

Sorted.

motherinferior · 10/02/2017 18:02

Where is that material from, and what are the 'health benefits'?

MumBod · 10/02/2017 18:02

Meant to say, give them all the boring ones that are left at the end, and eat all the
delicious toxic sugary ones yourself.

To save the kids from them, obv.

MumBod · 10/02/2017 18:03

motherinferior

One of Davina McCall's books, I think.

motherinferior · 10/02/2017 18:04

higher levels of beneficial nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals

how much higher levels of what, precisely, and what do they do?

Sugar is sugar, really. It's just some is more acceptable to posh people.

OxfordMourning · 10/02/2017 18:04

DifficultYear How much raw honey or maple syrup would we need to eat to see the health benefits? And would we need to balance that against refined sugars? Would be grateful if you could provide the ratios

motherinferior · 10/02/2017 18:05

Ah, Davina, that well-known biologist.

Alaia5 · 10/02/2017 18:09

DH's cousin runs a retreat in the US based on Amazonian and Shamanic practices. People in the Amazon use raw honey for its healing and antibacterial properties -e.g. in wounds or for throat infections. Nobody would rub a handful of Tate and Lyle on themselves would they? So who knows?

I once saw a woman in Hyde Park pouring Coca Cola (the one with the red label, not that it makes much difference) into BABIES' BOTTLES and giving it to her twins who were about two years old Shock

KatieScarlett · 10/02/2017 18:11

My GP told me to give flat fat Coke to DS when he was dehydrated with D&V. It worked.

Penfold007 · 10/02/2017 18:12

Alaia5 actually some doctors are using plain old granulated sugar for wounds, burns and ulcers instead of honey. Apparently it works just as well and is lots cheaper.

motherinferior · 10/02/2017 18:14

Yes, there is some evidence about manuka honey and wound healing. But I fail to see the connection between that and breakfast. I

BillSykesDog · 10/02/2017 18:16

The life expectancy of an Amazonian is 43. So their health tips are probably a bit shit.

difficultyear · 10/02/2017 18:16

Health benefits of raw honey is predominantly allergy related - specifically hay fever. Raw local honey can replace the need for antihistamines 100%.

Amazing health benefit

It's like saying that standard homogenised milk is as good as non -homogenised organic. The additional Omaga 3'a are worth it alone.

Some people go as far as drinking raw milk but I can't do that right now.

If I'm going to consume something bad for my health I'd much rather it contained some vitamins or other benefits so it wasn't just pure empty calories.
It doesn't stop me having a can of coke every so often but in my fridge for when I'm wanting a cold fuzzy non alcoholic beverage I will have the ones made with natural juices, with no added sugars or sweeteners and they taste better for it.
These aren't specialist items but things you can buy in your local supermarket.

My family have become very conscious of bad sugars due to previous ill health and it's amazing what a change in diet can do that has avoided the need for medication where it usually would be required.

It started for me when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.
I was prescribed carbimazol and before taking it I looked into what I could do that would help. Fe next time I went for my blood tests they had improved immeasurably.
The time after they said there was no sign of it.
This has also helped me successfully conceive when I hadn't been able to since coming off of the pill in 2012.

Alaia5 · 10/02/2017 18:18

Well Bill they work with what they have don't they.

LolDeLol · 10/02/2017 18:19

Noooooo, surely that's not true! Is there any proper scientific proof?
