to have a wobble re family photo session?

I won a free family photo session with a local photographer. She said that she will put the pics on her website, instagram and facebook pages. is there any potential danger in this or am too paranoid?

I think the biggest issue would be that they get to use pictures of your family for promotional purposes and you are likely to have to pay a fortune for any prints!
Unless you have a violent ex you are NC with I wouldn't worry.

Just ask her not to. She'll have a contract for you to sign (or should do) and you can ask to be excluded from that aspect. However it sounds like the purpose of the competition was for publicity so expect to lose the prize

Well, she will give me the digital files of the pictures so there will be no extra payments for prints. What I am worried about is that the pictures of my kids could be somehow harmful to them. Yes, the purpose was for publicity, as it is a new business

They'll just be pictures, she's not going to put their names, ages, addresses, school location or any other identifying info up there. She's not going to have them pose naked or in a suggestive manner. The only people who will know they are your kids, other than you, would be if someone who knows them is looking for a photographer and sees the pics on her site. What exactly are you worried about?

She does her promotion mostly through quite a large local mums group on facebook and I'm worried if there might be some dodgy people in this group and they will know that my kids are local (but this is probably overthinking????

It's contract details that you don't want creeps getting hold of, or pics with contact details.
There are kids everywhere , so dodgy people knowing yourd are local will not make them any more of a target.

YABU. The whole point of it being a free shoot is that she will be using the photos to promote her work. That would have been in the terms of the competition/draw

Again, local or not, how are the creepy people going to identify them and contact them? Unless you live in a hamlet pop. 98 in which case the creepy local people already know them so seeing their pics on a promotional fb page will make no difference to being able to identify and contact them whatsoever.

How would all these "creepy" people know how to contact your dc? Why would they contact your dc? The photos will NOT have your dc school, address, blood group on them I assume and they will just be standard nice family photos

If you don't want them used for promotional purposes, decline the prize and don't have a free photo shoot. Let some other family have a go at the prize.

I know it's not the point of your AIBU but these might not be good quality digital versions suitable for larger prints.

Your face/likeness is covered by the DPA, just like your contact details, so she can't use them without your permission.

That said, she is perfectly within her rights to ask for permission in exchange for a free shoot. So if you're not happy, you're options are to pay or to not have the shoot.

She owns the rights to the photographs, they are the photographers property. She can do with them what she wants.

Wouldn't those weirdos also be out and about when you are out with the kids(school run,out at the shops,at the park etc) and know they are local anyways? Even more so,on the street they could see them in school uniform,and know what school they go to,or see you go inside and know where u live etc.

It's not something I would do personally, but I have concerns regarding my eldest and my ex (he doesn't know where we are but doesn't stop trying to find out). But I really think you're overthinking it unless you have specific safeguarding concerns. A picture is a picture, unless the kids are going to have a piece of paper with address and contact details glued to their heads, I wouldn't panic. And if they are having a piece of paper with their details glued to their heads I think you have bigger problems.

On the right hand side of my screen, just now, are two photos of children: one a baby and the other a young girl.

How do I get information from these photos to track the children down? I suppose I could use photoshop and make some dodgy photos from them (if I had the know-how) but I'm sure there are more suitable starting images.

I'd go for it. It'll be fun!
