AIBU to pull my own teeth out?

Helpppp... I have a tooth and gum abscess.. got given Metronizadole (?) yesterday lunchtime, 5 day course. So far, no improvement. Literally feel like extracting own teeth could be a good option.

I've never had bad tooth problems before and I'm in agony. Can sleep / eat / focus... arggh. Taking paracetomol & codeine but only have one day left of them as 3 day maximum does apparently.

Anyone got experience or suggestions? I'm used to antibiotics starting to work quickly.. am I expecting too much?

Just to add into the mix.. my dentist is lovely. Having been 3 times now, he referred me to GP and dental surgeon because pain is still agonising.

GP has referred me to neurological depth at hospital as she thinks pain is TN something neuralgia... not associated with teeth at all although often confused.

Quite glad I didn't persuade dentist to pull tooth last week now but am still in agony ..

Got some new drugs today though so hoping maybe for some sleep. . Maybe First full night in two weeks.

Trigeminal neuralgia is what you mean - good job the tooth is still in if it is that then! Sorry you are still suffering though.
I'm about to cancel my extraction but nervous about doing it because I'm convinced the moment I do the pain will come back.

bbcessex · 16/02/2017 21:39

How are you feeling now Okite?

Okite · 16/02/2017 21:42

Good! I'm still nervous about eating on it because I expect the pain to come back but actually it's feeling completely normal. I've made an appointment with my dentist to continue the root filling, just haven't taken the last step of cancelling my extraction appointment.

bbcessex · 16/02/2017 21:46

So glad it feels well 😆 sounds like extraction not needed.. i imagine dentists would advise saving a tooth wherever possible .. but I understand your fear..

You poor things with tooth problems :( I'm really feeling for everyone. I've had trouble for 5 years (not an infection), dentist was someone I knew personally so I put up with her for so long thinking she knew best. Finally had enough of the pain and went private last month. I'm getting sorted now but it will take a year at least to sort all the issues she ignored. Private dentist is sending me to orthodontist for root treatment, I'm actually terrified

bbcessex · 17/02/2017 18:54

User - that is so terrible. Have you been able to tell her about the issues that the private dentist raised?

Re: Root treatment.. obviously there are still some crap dentists out there, but if you make sure you get an amazing recommendation, root canals have come such a long way - they're no longer the torture they used to be.

I'm in the South East... if you are anywhere in SE, PM me if you want a recommendation of someone amazing to do it xxxx

user I would be very worried about seeing an orthodontist for root canal .... as they specialise in braces, and probably haven't done a root treatment in years> You need to see an endodontist! - a specialist in root treatment.

Hello fellow tooth friends Grin

Quick update from me.. finally the offending tooth culprit started to show itself yesterday. .. nearly three weeks after agonising 'general' jaw / tooth pain..

Just had emergency appointment.. do found crack and pulpitis in pinpointed tooth. . Had temporary treatment which has already helped, and booked in for possible root canal or if can't, an extraction for Friday.

Am now on sofa without a screwed up face for first time in what seems like a very long time.

Any updates from you guys?

Okite · 21/02/2017 14:08

Oh so please you finally have a bit of progress! Hope that Friday is the end of it one way or another.
Mine still tentatively ok, I've cancelled my extraction which was going to be this weekend. Had a flash of pain earlier so immediately panicked it was going to come back but nothing since!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 21/02/2017 16:48

I go back tomorrow - thought it was improving but really bloody sore today. Now worrying that he won't be able to do anything if if is still swollen.

bbcessex · 21/02/2017 19:46

Okite ... so pleased all is going well... I understand your fear about twinges etc... even though I am 'pain free' relatively today, I am so scared it's because of the anaethetic / pain killer build up etc.
Fingers crossed you stay pain free xxx

Bunch you prove the point.. you poor thing.. sorry that you've gone downhill. Let us know how you get on.

Now sporting a numb gob and a new filling. Apparently not as much crap in there as he expected- which worries me a little in case it has been missed somehow.

bbcessex · 24/02/2017 10:08

hmmm .. how are you feeling now Bunch?

Okite · 24/02/2017 14:43

😞my tooth has started hurting again today

bbcessex · 24/02/2017 16:51

Okite Noooo.. surely not... what sort of pain? Just a niggle?

OP posts:
YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 24/02/2017 17:00

Oh no Okite!

I am a lot happier today but still very conscious of the rough surface on the new filling.

I took my last Metronidazole at 9am Weds - dare I try a glass of wine tonight?

Okite · 24/02/2017 18:04

It's sort of pressure building up, so tender to the touch. It's how it's always started before. I do have a pack of antibiotics on standby in case I need them. Arse.

bunch I'm sure I read somewhere it's 48 hours after finishing metronidazole that is ok for alcohol again, so that would make it ok. Don't take my word though!

bbcessex · 24/02/2017 18:24

Bunch... I'm particularly wary of drinking after metronizadole.. you're way past the 48 hours but If it was me, I'd leave it till tomorrow (based on no medical knowledge whatsoever!!).

Okite... take it you haven't had a root canal in that tooth?

OP posts:
laureywilliams · 24/02/2017 18:35

I only waited 24 hours. No problem x

Okite · 24/02/2017 18:40

It's a partial root canal - basically the first stage of removing the nerve has been done (months ago!) and since then it's been fairly regular/constant pain and infections. Until the last few weeks and it's been absolutely fine. Was going to try actually getting the root filling finished.
