AIBU to pull my own teeth out?

Helpppp... I have a tooth and gum abscess.. got given Metronizadole (?) yesterday lunchtime, 5 day course. So far, no improvement. Literally feel like extracting own teeth could be a good option.

I've never had bad tooth problems before and I'm in agony. Can sleep / eat / focus... arggh. Taking paracetomol & codeine but only have one day left of them as 3 day maximum does apparently.

Anyone got experience or suggestions? I'm used to antibiotics starting to work quickly.. am I expecting too much?

double I did it myself. The pain the teeth were causing was horrifc. Honestly I would rather had ten natural childbirth.
I just had to get the teeth OUT. I just dug them out with my hands and cannabis.
Hope you feel better soon Flowers

sprecken.. you must have been absolutely desperate. . Bloody terrible that you had to get to that stage without help. . I'm livid on your behalf. Are you pain free now? Have you got any lasting problems?

@doubleshotespresso how are you managing today?

Evening everyone.
Just a quick update.. am on day 2 of amoxycillin and things seem to be improving. Took double doses all yesterday and have felt less throbbing today.

Hoping to even get some sleep tonight. . Fingers crossed.

Apparently Metronidazole is for a different type of bacteria / gum abscess.. hence not touching it.

Thanks to those who advised going elsewhere. . If I hadn't, I'd still be waiting for Wednesday on tablets that were not working at all.

Glad things are improving for you bbc.
I'm tentatively crossing fingers here because I've actually been pain-free for about 5 days now and am desperately hoping that this could mean the infection has cleared and I won't end up having my tooth out after all.

abbsisspartacus · 13/02/2017 09:31

Hot salt wash followed by lots of flossing then clove oil tends to drain the access

Auntymildred · 13/02/2017 09:47

Flowers Hope you feel better soon OP. Having a wisdom tooth abscess made me want to die even with constant dosing of ibuprofen and paracetamol - glad that pp are saying it is worse than childbirth though as I am waiting...

After that on dentist's advice kept plenty of corsodyl, tcp and cotton buds in medicine cabinet to swap any niggly areas with undiluted stuff to prevent a potential infection setting in. Seems to have done the trick!

Auntymildred · 13/02/2017 09:49

*swab! Obvs cannot spell...

Somanyshoes · 13/02/2017 10:04

Completely sympathise with you OP, having had sleepless nights for the last few days with ear, jaw, gum, mouth etc in agony. I managed to get an emergency appt this morning (I'm not in the UK) and it's an impacted wisdom tooth that has become infected underneath. I suspected this, as I had it 15 years ago on the other side - I'm now 43, ffs! Have to have extraction in hospital under GA this Saturday (as apparently it's a complicated one), in the meantime I've been prescribed the metronidazole stuff, Amoclan Forte and Ponstan Forte (not sure if you can get the latter in UK), but finally, the pain has subsided a bit, hurrah! I only started the course a couple of hours ago, but something seems to be fast-acting, I think that's the Ponstan (said to be an analgesic and anti-inflammatory), might be worth asking for.
Flowers for you though.

bbcessex · 13/02/2017 12:49

Thanks for the reminder AuntyMildred... I've now got a corsydl soaked cotton pad in my mouth.

I spoke to soon about the improvement.. sort of.. am just starting day 3 of the amoxicillin... the constant throbbing seems to have stopped now but the sharp shooting pains are very much still ongoing. I suppose the no-throbbing is still some improvement at least.

I'm losing track of the painkillers I'm taking (except for the paracetamol.. I'm mindful of those). The dentist gave me 600mg ibuprofen with a max of 2400mg per day... so I'm now doing 2 x paracetmol and 2 x 'normal' ibuprofen 4 hourly, with a 600mg one 6 hourly in between. Probably too much ibuprofen but I'm still in constant pain and I don't think you can overdose on that..

*I'm taking greek live yoghurt with all tablets, a: to 'line' my stomach, and b: to try and counterbalance effects of antibiotics.

I have a dentist appointment for tomorrow afternoon. Wish I could be knocked out till then but it's half term of course, so attempting to plunder on.

Somanyshoes...you poor thing... sounds like you've got a good treatment plan in place... long time till Saturday though.

Shakeyospeare.. thanks for the link to the other thread... I read through it in the night. I can't believe I was putting a hotwater bottle on my face.. what an idiot.

I now have an ice pack instead.. much better for temp relief. Plus I went at 3:00am into the spare room and opened the window wide so my face would freeze

bbcessex · 13/02/2017 13:04

Okite.. fingers crossed for you... so pleased you're pain free.

My dentist has said to me that even if the pain clears, the problem is still there, so don't be fooled into putting off treatment.. not sure if that would be the same for you?

I've definitely learnt a lesson and will not be minimising dental issues again...

Sympathies, dental pain is definitely the worst. I've had three teeth infections in the past four months and I actually can't think of anything worse, nothing.

Deadsouls · 13/02/2017 13:28

Why not go to emergency dentist and they will pull it out for you. Apologies if I'm late to the party and you've already done that.

Okite · 13/02/2017 13:32

bbc, I make a note on my phone when I've taken what so I don't lose track, try that?

bbcessex · 13/02/2017 13:34

Thanks all. funnily enough, the sympathy does help!

Deadsouls... I know, that does seem sensible, but 1: emergency dentist is actually almost impossible to find, and 2: I did finally get an emergency appointment on Sat and he advised the tooth is saveable (?) and strongly recommended I take the anti-biotics and wait it out.

That, plus I actually don't properly know which tooth is the culprit, is the problem..

I find water flossing useful if I have a sore tooth, something like this:

tobecontinued2000 · 13/02/2017 18:28

I double the dose of the antibiotics on the first day so I'm having 48hours in 24.

Hot water bottle on your face, mouthwash and plenty of cocodamol.

You could take night nurse to make sure you get some sleep.

bbcessex · 13/02/2017 18:52

tobecontinued.. I did the same with antibiotics.. 2 x 500mg amoxicillin 3 times a day on the first day.. then back to 1 x 500mg. I'm on day 3 now. Throbbing has stopped.. shooting pains still there when painkiller's wearing off.

The hot water bottle made things 10 x worse for me.. then I read on the thread link up thread that you should never put heat on tooth pain as it inflames the nerves.

Now I have an ice pack (frozen peas!) instead.

Good shout re: the night nurse.

I am currently suffering with this. It fucking knacks.

On Metronidazole as allergic to penicillin: not sure if it is that which is causing horrendous indigestion and severe wind.

bbcessex · 16/02/2017 20:40

Feel so sorry for you. Can't believe so many sufferers ..

Shenanagins · 16/02/2017 20:43

You have my sympathies, it's the worst pain ever. It took me a week to recover and I hope I never experience anything like it again.
