AIBU to pull my own teeth out?

Helpppp... I have a tooth and gum abscess.. got given Metronizadole (?) yesterday lunchtime, 5 day course. So far, no improvement. Literally feel like extracting own teeth could be a good option.

I've never had bad tooth problems before and I'm in agony. Can sleep / eat / focus... arggh. Taking paracetomol & codeine but only have one day left of them as 3 day maximum does apparently.

Anyone got experience or suggestions? I'm used to antibiotics starting to work quickly.. am I expecting too much?

Shock prunes it is then. . I do not need to add piles to this problem 😨

Opiates won't do much on their own. Codeine does little for tooth pain. Believe me I know, I suffered with 3 infected teeth and 2 abscesses for over a year because I was so scared to go to the dentist. It's anti-inflammatories you want. Take 3 ibuprofen and 2 paracetamol together every 6 hours. The 200mg ibuprofen NOT the 400. It takes a few doses to build up but will get rid of the pain almost entirely.

I lost a tooth after an abcess dealt with via that gel stuff and it being Christmas. Totally my fault. After that I got an infection in the socket/remaining root. I was physically smacking my head against walls to try to distract from the pain and eventually zoned out on solvable codeine. You have my sympathies, tooth pain is horrendous.

doubleshotespresso · 10/02/2017 16:49

Seren85 Yes I powered (or so I like to think) through christmas, not realising quite what the problem was. Never again.

Am currently drinking coffee through a straw. This is not glamorous and agonising too.... Confused

Formerpigwrestler9 · 10/02/2017 16:55

I've done the same, just put up with tooth discomfort which came to seem normal and I got used to the measures I was taking to deal with it.
Then it gets bad and I go to the dentist, afterwards I think what was wrong with me, I should have just gone straight away when the problem could have been solved more cheaply and less invasively!

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 13:58

Hi all... so sorry that so many are suffering.

I was crying with agony in the night... local dentist telephone numbers said phone '111' for an emergency, which I did, and they weren't able to offer any help at all (despite being very kind - poor things, must be so frustrating to work in that environment).

So I phoned a further local number at 6:00am and someone answered !!! Made me an appointment for 8:30am. . dentist took xrays.. still nothing super-obvious but some significant decay under a crown in the back tooth where the pain area is... am now on 500mg Amoxycillin for 7 days - apparently the Mitronazadole that I was given is for gum abscess and won't clear an in-tooth abscess?
Have to take the antibiotics first, then a root canal.

I did ask him to take the tooth out but he was against it.. he said it was saveable and taking it out could cause additional problems.. He advised me to take double doses of the amoxy today and been given a prescription for 600mg ibuprofens.

doubleshot.. I have a straw in my tea right now. Tried to drink without and the heat on my tooth shot me through the roof.

seren I so agree... I'm never going to ignore niggles again. Tooth maintenance is now top of my list.

DH has an abscess which spread into his face. His whole face was swollen twice the size on the right--we were later told that it was full of pus that had come from his tooth. He was very close to being admitted for IV antibiotics and to operate on his face. It happened again a few years later. He was referred to the dental hospital and they said it was due to an old root canal filling that hadn't been done deep enough . They fixed it and he's been fine since then.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 14:07

toast Shock omg.. that sounds absolutely horrendous.
was he having treatment for his abscess before it spread (or 'powering through' as seems to be the common mistake?)

I let one of my teeth get so bad that the nerves just died. The pain would come for a week and would be agonising, i wouldnt even want to talk. I fed myself with painkillers and amazingly ice cold water gave instant pain relief. I drank water constantly, i think being so well hydrated was what helped me get pregnant after trying for months Blush

Trainspotting1984 · 11/02/2017 14:11

Doubleshot Sad my dad has that recently. The dentist even dug her knee into his chest for traction and couldn't get it out Shock he did get a hospital appointment fairly quickly though x

SlankyBodger · 11/02/2017 14:14

DH had an infection, dentist prescribed anti-biotics and at the end of the course, pulled the tooth. The infection had NOT cleared and if there's one thing a dentist shouldn't do, it's pull a tooth where there's still infection.

In less than 3 days, dh went from lots of pain to LOTS OF PAIN, was hospitalised, had a massive hole cut in his neck in order to drain the infection and iv abs. Nightmare.

Cheby · 11/02/2017 14:19

Metronidazole will clear a dental abscess. Amoxicillin is usually the first port of call though. The last few o have had needed 3 courses of both to clear it.

In the mean time, you need PROPER pain relief. Dentists can and do prescribe codeine. If you've got tramadol as well that will work. Ibuprofen can be used to alternate. I wouldn't bother with the chemist. There is basically nothing OTC that will touch it.

Hopefully the metronidazole will kick in shortly and you'll feel some relief. I've always been told to double dose my first amoxicillin as well when I've had bad dental infections.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 14:25

Cheby - should I finish the course of Metronizadole then? Dentist said not to...

Slanky... that is absolutely horrific.. how did DH get admitted to hospital? Did the dentist refer him?

cupoftea lovely to hear you got a positive result out of it Smile Though the thought of drinking ice cold water makes me want to scream.. am currently microwaving all water before I drink it because even room temperature is too cold.

bbc he'd already been to the dentist and was on antibiotics, but they didn't work and the pain didn't improve. He left it at first because he thought he should give the antibiotics enough time to work, but then he woke up looking like the elephant man. I can't quite remember the correct terms, but basically the pus had burst into the surrounding facial area. He couldn't talk because of the weight of it pulling his face down. Thankfully our dentist was trained in dental surgery and other extra qualifications so he managed to treat it without hospital, but DH said he was squeezing pus out of his face for ages (sorry if you've just had your lunch).

To cap it off, his boss was an absolute arse about him being off sick and rang to tell him to get back to work as it was only toothache.

Oldraver · 11/02/2017 14:29

I had to have three lots of anti-biotics for my tooth abcess..I dont think it helped as the first two were short courses..then my GP gave me a full week. I'm not one for taken anti-b's often as well.

You can take Co-Codomal for longer than three days. .its just what they advise OTC. I certainly wouldn't stop taking them after three days if you are still in pain. I think they do Ibuprofen with codeine as well

RobinHumphries · 11/02/2017 14:33

SlankyBodger you are talking crap. Very often the best thing for an infected tooth is for it to come out cos that allows the infection to drain.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 15:08

I don't know what's right or wrong but the dentist today said that he couldn't do a root canal until the infection had cleared, but he COULD remove the infected tooth today which would 'solve' the immediate problem.

However, he was very reluctant to do that as he said he could save the tooth once antibiotics had kicked in and that was high strong recommendation.

I've taken out two teeth myself. I simply couldn't afford a dentist. I could afford a bit of draw and then dug them out. I used paracetamol, salt water and listerine.
Nothing bad happened.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 15:16

toast.. OMG. that is horrific..

OP posts:
doubleshotespresso · 11/02/2017 17:10

Spacken I salute you! Did you use pliers yourself? Or get somebody else to do it?

*DH has just loudly exclaimed "Don't you dare look at me for that-no way"

I think I 'd have to do it myself. I just looked at myself in the bathroom mirror-this is not going well at all. I look dreadful.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 18:40

double I can't imagine how much pain you're in.. I have so much sympathy for you. . Is there anything you can do to speed up that hospital app? Or go to another emergency dentist for extraction ?

OP posts:
iveburntthetoast · 11/02/2017 18:54

bbc It happened to my DH twice. He was referred to the dental hospital and they realised the cause of the problem was a poorly done root canal filling. They re-did the filling and the abscess has never returned.

His boss was a bastard. There was another occasion when he collapsed with extreme pain at work and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. He was admitted with kidney stones--his boss texted him after 24 hours asking when he would be back at work. I was so glad that he was made redundant by them 18 months ago.

bbcessex · 11/02/2017 19:56

Your poor poor DH, toast. What a lot of pain he's had to contend with. Hope he's well now.

Boss sounds horrific.
