AIBU to pull my own teeth out?

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 12:18

Helpppp... I have a tooth and gum abscess.. got given Metronizadole (?) yesterday lunchtime, 5 day course. So far, no improvement. Literally feel like extracting own teeth could be a good option.

I've never had bad tooth problems before and I'm in agony. Can sleep / eat / focus... arggh. Taking paracetomol & codeine but only have one day left of them as 3 day maximum does apparently.

Anyone got experience or suggestions? I'm used to antibiotics starting to work quickly.. am I expecting too much?

X-ray's aren't always that clear. I had pain and the X-ray showed no hole in tooth, I made a pest of myself, turns out there was a hole just below the gum.

With regard to numbing prior to extraction, the bottom jaw is more complex to numb than the upper. I had six injections, plus a nerve block and still felt the pain. I was sent back to the waiting room, by the time I was called back it had worn off again...

Screwinthetuna · 09/02/2017 13:50

My dentist had be gargle with hot (as hot as I could bear) salty water every 15 mins, as well as doucing it wirh a weak hydrogen peroxide solution and the corsodyl (sp?). Soak a smal piece of cotton wool in the mouthwash, pack it on the tooth and keep it there. Feel better soon!

doubleshotespresso · 09/02/2017 13:58

Okite shit that is truly a lifetime- I don't see myself lasting that long but don't see what alternative I have. Unfortunately I do not have funds to do this privately right now....

I am so exhausted and dejected with the whole thing I cannot see straight. I refuse to return to the dentist as the whole experience was so horrific I had to get my other half to come and meet me, I had two assistants holding my hands as he worked away, was screaming in agony and he just carried on until one of them said "I think double has had enough dentist"....

I feel like my head is breaking in half-this is soon bad!

Okite · 09/02/2017 14:39

I really hope your area isn't as bad as mine double. The whole reason I'm waiting for sedation is because I had a terrible traumatic extraction years ago and it has put me off for life! The private extraction is going to cost £400 😣 But I can't wait to get it over and done with, it's been going on since November.

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 14:53

so sorry to hear of your suffering Okite and Double (and all).
terrible.

I now have some Orajel and Nurforen / Codeine.
Spoken again to dentist.. he said I have to give the antibiotics time to work (fair enough) as he won't be able to see what's actually causing the problem until swelling has gone down (sounds reasonable).

Next appointment not till Wednesday...

Orajel seems to be working already - thanks very much for the tip.

Shame no alcohol on Metronazaole... I some codeine and vodka sounds quite appealing right now

OP posts:
Miserylovescompany2 · 09/02/2017 15:35

Make sure there is no alcohol in your mouthwash.

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 15:42

Good shout misery.. apparently alcohol and metronidazole really are a bad mix (not sure why).

ohyesiam.. I am inclined to try another dentist but think I should probably see if antibiotics work first. .falling on a darn weekend is the problem.

Orajel currently providing 20 mins of relative numbness 😍

SorrelSoup · 09/02/2017 15:54

Currently only suffering with an ulcer around new extraction site. Been crying with pain. Got difflam numbing mouthwash yesterday and it's helped no end. Not sure if that's what orajel is.

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 15:58

Oh no Sorrel. That sounds really painful.. did you have a lot of pain before the tooth was taken out?

I'll Google difflam

SorrelSoup · 09/02/2017 16:01

Had a deep filling last week that must have been too deep and affected the nerve. It was low level constant pain. Had tooth out on Monday and it's been hell. Think I've turned a corner fingers crossed. Still awake in the night with pain and to take medication. Feeling for everyone with dental pain.

Werkzallhourz · 09/02/2017 16:08

If you cannot cope with the pain, go back to the dentist and say so.

I had an abscess caused by a crack in a filling, and was given antibiotics. Two days later, the pain became so bad, I couldn't control it with co-codamol with 30mg of codeine, interspersed with ibuprofen, on a strict timed regimen. It was beyond agony.

I went back to the dentist and just said I couldn't cope with the pain and he drained the abscess there and then in an emergency appointment and put a temporary filling in while I waited for an appointment for a root canal.

With pain like this, you have to think about it in terms of pain management. I actually called up my GP on the Friday afternoon and got them to prescribe me with the 30mg co-codamol until I could get through to my dentist on the Monday morning. My GP even offered me tramadol, but I thought that might be overkill at the time. In hindsight, I wish I'd taken it.

Don't suffer in silence. Go back to your dentist.

HelenaWay · 09/02/2017 16:10

Lots of people advise alternating paracetamol and ibruprofen. There is lots of good evidence out there however stating that they are more effective when taken together.

I'm a nurse and we always give both together.

doubleshotespresso · 09/02/2017 16:27

Gosh cannot believe how many people are suffering, this is actually the worst I have ever felt I think, it's just gone on so long.

Okite wow £400 is a lot of money but I think if I had it available and it speeded things up I would jump at private option.

Does anybody here know if the orajel is available anywhere in a bigger tube? The stupid little ones I keep re-buying are over a fiver and lasting me about a day....

BBC I hope you get yours sorted soon.

MyOtherNameIsTaken · 09/02/2017 16:37

alcohol and metronidazole really are a bad mix

You really don't want to be potentially adding nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps and headaches to your woes.

Hope you do feel better soon, it really is an awful pain. Flowers

PowerPantsRule · 09/02/2017 16:41

The strongest painkillers OTC are Paramol - dihydrocodeine and paracetamol (obv be careful about taking too much paracetamol and mixing it with other painkillers, keep a careful count not to exceed 8 tablets a day). Also Solpadeine are good, the max strength ones. Really hope it starts to calm down for you - toothache is all encompassing Flowers

GREATAUNT1 · 09/02/2017 16:49

MrGA pulled 2 of his out. The dentist said he had infection & refused to pull it so MrGA got the pliers out. Dentist lied. Hope you get it sorted soon!

SlankyBodger · 09/02/2017 17:10

Probably best not to.

We have a friend who did do this, with a pair of pliers. He filmed the whole thing and put it on YouTube.

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 18:24

Shock blimey - must be bad to pull out your own teeth.. eeek. I'm hopeful that I won't get that bad .

I do have some tramadol from a knee op... I might dig that out. I must figure out what pain meds I've taken today.. I'm very conscious of not going over the paracetamol limit but I've lost track of the ibuprofen / codeine I've taken today.

doubleshot I can see how you'd get through the orajel quickly. Tubes are tiny. 'use 4 times a day".. hmmm.. 4 times an hour more like.

Thanks to the poster who said not putting up with the pain; I completely agree with you. If I have to, I'll go and camp at dentist / doctors.. just want to have at least 48 hours on the antibiotics so I can use that as evidence.

OP posts:
LeSquigh · 09/02/2017 18:28

You can definitely take codeine for longer than 3 days, it's just the over the counter boxes that tell you not to. I am pregnant and I take high strength ones every day. Those antibiotics will work, they are very good. A word of warning though, DO NOT DRINK with them. It really applies with these. I drunk two days after a course and was violently ill. I had been warned....

bbcessex · 09/02/2017 18:43

Thanks LeSquish - I am definitely going to heed the warning. I'm not interesting in drinking right now anyway, so that helps.

Sorry that you're in such pain, esp with being pregnant too.

Thattimeofyearagain · 09/02/2017 18:45

Second the advice on codine, it can be addictive but I'm on prescription strength and have been for a year. It can affect your Bowels though. I had my abscess drained on Monday - good god the relief. Hope it feels better soon Flowers

picklemepopcorn · 09/02/2017 18:48

If you are on codeine, drink plenty and take some high fibre foods- flax seed, prunes...
Salt water helps reduce inflammation.

picklemepopcorn · 09/02/2017 18:48

And ice!

Imsotiredofmotherhood · 09/02/2017 18:50

Oh goodness I had an infection 2 weeks ago. This thread is bringing the pain memories back. I was on 7 days of amoxicillin and the pain went after about 4 days. I was dying for some morphine. That's how bad it was. Hope you feel better soon OP.

iLoveCamelCase · 09/02/2017 19:29

Really empathise. This kind of pain is horrendous. Also second the advice about codeine... made me so constipated in this exact situation that I got piles BlushAngryBlush
