To think someone is cheating on their Fitbit?

Totally minor and 1st world problem I know.

But is it actually possible to get 135000 steps in less than 3 days by just going about your day. That includes 65000 steps today alone.

For comparison I do between 8000 and 14000 a day. DH is training for an ultra marathon and did 65000 steps on a 30 mile run.

Quite why these devices aren't designed to fit around your ankle, the part that is involved in the actual stride is something of a mystery.
They clearly count any wrist movements, even when sitting down.
They are obviously useless for the designed intent.

FearTheLiving · 09/02/2017 12:32

narky it's probably more to do with the length of the shift. It only takes me an hour to walk 10,000 steps so if you're working 12-14 hours shifts it's doable.

Lollypop27 · 09/02/2017 12:36

Maybe they craft - I take mine off when I'm knitting or crocheting because it registers that I'm doing steps.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 09/02/2017 12:37

It only takes me an hour to walk 10,000 steps

How are you measuring that? I think this is an example of what we are talking about...10,000 steps an hour would be 163 steps a minute, which is a running pace, its almost impossible to achieve walking, unless you are an olympic level fast walker.
I'm not trying to be rude, but I doubt your stats are accurate.

FearTheLiving · 09/02/2017 12:42

Maybe just over an hour then. Definitely not that long. I go out for an hour power walk every evening and always do at least 10,000 steps.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 09/02/2017 12:43

Your counter/fitbit says you do 10.000 steps. But if you're not walking for 80 mins, its unlikely you are getting an accurate read.

Somehowsomewhere · 09/02/2017 12:46

The normal route for my dog walk is 35 mins and 3700 steps according to my Fitbit. That seems about right?

Huldra · 09/02/2017 12:48

Yes somehow. That sound right to me, what with few stops for the dog etc

NextInLine · 09/02/2017 12:53

Me and DH are in competition as to who does the most steps in a day.
I sometimes attach mine to my three year old and that significantly ups the steps.
Does she have a toddler?

poshme · 09/02/2017 12:54

Maybe she's sawing lots of logs? That always ups my steps!

Somehowsomewhere · 09/02/2017 12:56

Yep, reckon about 4 mins are taken up with lamp post stops!

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 09/02/2017 13:06

35 mins minus 4 mins for stops 3,700 /31 mins = 119 steps per minute.... would be a pretty brisk walk but probably fairly accurate unless you are slower than that?

CantstandmLMs · 09/02/2017 13:13

Seems unrealistic from her answers in the chat! If she said something like "I'm really pushing myself to the limit. Constant walking, going for runs etc. Etc."

I did a 27 mile charity walk and clocked about 65k steps. Some of my friends had logged over 70 by the end. Stride difference I guess....despite feet falling apart and sheet pain I walked after until I got that 70k badge 😩 Torture!

In a workweek hustle I got ridiculously competitive towards the end of the Friday and went to the gym for hours after work until I got over 40k that day!!

Wtfdoipick · 09/02/2017 13:16

I walk to and from work at a brisk pace. It is an office job but I do have to do a fair bit of fetching things. My normal work day is 35,000 steps, it can be as high as 50,000 by the time I get home. I then start cooking, housework, laundry etc so I can see 65,000 being easy to do. The question is how many steps did she do last week.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 13:17

I go out for an hour power walk every evening and always do at least 10,000 steps
How far is your route?

The other day, I ran 10.5 km in 10,700 steps (my stride is 0.98m when running) and took around an hour to do it (quite an easy pace). That works out at 5:40 min km. Or 6.6mph. That's some power walk if you are matching that (which the stats suggest you are).

It only takes me an hour to walk 10,000 steps so if you're working 12-14 hours shifts it's doable
But you claim to do 10,000 steps in a hour of power walking at waht must be nearly 7mph. A nurse on a shift does not power walk at 7mph all the time. A nurse on a shift will spend time doing more infrequent steps around bedsides, hang around stations with notes, and so on.

FearTheLiving · 09/02/2017 13:19

Alright Jesus I'll just fuck off then.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 13:21

The most accurate FitBits are the tiny clip-on ones that you wear on your hip.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 13:26

Fear No no no, I didn't mean to sound aggressive. There are just many things that don't add up about how a lot of people are reporting their or their mates' step counts Flowers

Along with the many who are openly claiming knitting or toddler steps as part of their weekly challenges Shock Grin

AuroraBora · 09/02/2017 13:27

Well clearly she's cheating.

Let's say she averages 2 steps a second. So every minute of walking is 2x60=120 steps.

Every hour is 60x120=7,200 steps.

135,000/7,200=18.75 hours of walking.

So has she walked constantly for 6 hours plus everyday, over the past 3 days? Unlikely, and she say so if she had!

I'd call her on it. Just ask how she racked up steps overnight.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 13:29

What Narky says is 10,000 steps an hour would be 163 steps a minute

163 steps a minute is nearly three steps a second. Does that honestly seem like the speed at which you are moving your legs? Only you know, you could be a super quick walker!

MrsPMT · 09/02/2017 13:31

These things are so inaccurate, I don't even bother any more, used to use a fitbug (got from MN) and it was ok as long as I didn't wear it on my wrist, steps came on when sitting Hmm

Also remember talking to another mum and she said her general 'walking around town & to school' gave her something like 20,000 steps, I walk most places plus a long dog walk and never got near that, i think she realised hers wasn't set right or working properly.

Also IMO, the walking around in daily life may give a slight indication of your improved fitness as opposed to someone sedentary but unless you are power walking or jogging/running its not really 'exercise'

chemenger · 09/02/2017 13:33

10 000 steps is about 6.6 km (using a stride length of 0.66 m for a woman which I found by googling and seems quite well accepted). That is 4.1 miles, which isn't far off an hours brisk walking. So 65 000 steps in a day is 26.65 miles, more or less a marathon.

80 000 steps in a 12 hour shift would be 32.8 miles, at 2.73 mph. At brisk walking pace that would be walking for about 70% of the time (so not walking for 18 minutes per hour).

Given that my Fitbit tells me that I have done 1 100 steps today when I have been sitting around all day (I have walked between the house and the car, the carpark and my office and to the loo and back) I suspect there is a lot of overcounting.

MrsPMT · 09/02/2017 13:33

Maid thinking of the nurses in a ward power walking around at 7mph, it would be like a Benny Hill sketch Grin

FairyDogMother11 · 09/02/2017 13:45

I'm a waitress and on my best day I did 32,000 steps in an 8 hour shift. I sometimes work upto 12 hours - although haven't done a shift that long since I got my Fitbit so I'd imagine I do a lot more on those days. Just depends how quickly you're moving and how long your days are really. I can clock up 10,000 on my hour long dog walk everyday Grin

Miaculpa · 09/02/2017 13:52

when i first got my jawbone it didnt fit correctly on my wrist - too loose. I seem to clock up a lot more steps as it moved about on my wrist. Once i got the clasp fixed suddenly my steps dropped off to about 120000 per day. I think i was getting up towards 16k with the loose band.
