To think someone is cheating on their Fitbit?

Totally minor and 1st world problem I know.

But is it actually possible to get 135000 steps in less than 3 days by just going about your day. That includes 65000 steps today alone.

For comparison I do between 8000 and 14000 a day. DH is training for an ultra marathon and did 65000 steps on a 30 mile run.

DS has his under his sock on his ankle (not allowed them at school)

His max is 19000 in a day (he's 9!) he covers a lot of steps at lunch!

fanniboz · 09/02/2017 08:27

My steps goal is 13,500 and I reach it easily through work. I work 12hr night shifts and am constantly on my feet. My Fitbit reads 10,377 steps already. Quite often over 15,000 on a normal day. In London a few weekends ago I hit 30,000+ steps in one day. I was bloomin knackered Grin

QuimReaper · 09/02/2017 08:59

Endo I completely agree!

*Totally plausible

DS had 12000 just at school!*

Confused

Can I just clarify that the OP says ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND in three days; including SIXTY FIVE THOUSAND in a single day!

Sixty five thousand steps - for contrast I'm pretty sedentary during the day so usually go out on a long stomp once I've finished work for the day. Yesterday I walked for just over 90 mins to get about 11,000 steps. So assuming the OP's colleague is roughly average in size she would have to walk for around 9hrs straight to achieve that.

OP were the 135K steps over a weekend? I mean, maybe she's a rambler...? Guessing if you were though, when you queried her steps she'd have said "well, I'm a rambler", not "I go to Asda a lot" Grin

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 09/02/2017 09:05

To be clear, 135 thousand steps is 103 km.

QuimReaper · 09/02/2017 09:14

Why did me typing A s d a auto-link the word to their site? When did that start? Confused

Whitney168 · 09/02/2017 09:25

Maybe not actively cheating, but definitely mis-reporting unless extremely active for many hours a day. A friend who has recently joined our challenges thought she was doing fabulously well, until she worked out she was wearing it on her dominant hand and had it set for non-dominant.

ImtheSantaAnaWinds · 09/02/2017 09:39

I know someone who got ~50000 in a day as a one off. She walked to work and back as her car had broken down, has an active job, played sport in the evening. She is super fit and she could hardly move the next day. I find it hard to believe someone could do 65000 in a day without something approachi g that level of effort.

I rack up around 1000 wandering round Asda and it's a big AsdaGrin. If she was doing 65 laps, they'd be kicking her out for excessive stays.

Bunnyjo · 09/02/2017 09:43

Definitely cheating - a woman's average stride length is 26.4 inch, so 65,000 steps is just over 27 miles! Unless "I go to Asda a lot..." is some sort of code and she actually means "I am training for the London Marathon", I highly doubt she has managed to cover over 56 miles in under 3 days...

On a normally active day I do between 8,000 and 15,000 steps, and a very active day (which would consist of an 8 mile walk, a 5 km run and lots of other activity) would only see me reaching around 30,000 steps. My friend's husband is a very busy and active farmer, and even he only manages around 33,000 steps on an average day.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 09:58

I have done 150000-ish steps in the last seven days.

Thursday 21000 steps (no exercise)
Friday 19500 steps (weight training, 1hour)
Saturday 36000 steps (22km run, 2hours20)
Sunday 17000 steps (8km run, 45mins)
Monday 17000 steps (no exercise)
Tuesday 29000 steps (11km run, 1hour10)
Wednesday 23000 steps (5km run, 30min)

You can't do 135000 in three 'normal' days.

I think what this thread mainly illustrates is what a load of specious wank fitbits are.

MumBod · 09/02/2017 11:31

I love mine, it definitely keeps me more active, and I've lost nearly a stone since November through using it and watching my diet.

I reckon she's got hers on her dominant hand. I made this mistake once and racked up about 15k steps painting a bookcase Grin

greenmidgetgems · 09/02/2017 11:50

Update - she's now at 150k. That's 15000 since last night.

I WANT to call her on it but I'll look petty and vindictive.

Just to clarify she is not a work colleague, I dont actually know her. We have a mutual Fitbit friend who has invited us both to the workweek hustle challenge.

I love my Fitbit, I know it's not 100% accurate but it definitely keeps me motivated and more active. Plus I have it linked to my life insurance and I get free cinema tickets if I do a certain number of steps per week Grin

OP posts:
Huldra · 09/02/2017 11:51

It does sound very high. I'm a 15,000to 25,000 person a day but 25,000 includes at least a 5 mile hill walk, walking to local shops, house work, walking to school. Very little sitting down during the day. It sn't going to Asda Grin

She may have set it up wrong, or doing something to set it off. Then hasn't thought through how many miles that many steps really equates to. I find my Fitbit HR fairly accurate, it doesn't really count when using my arms or when driving,

Or of course she could be spending her days watching daytime tv whilst on a treadmill.

raffleswinch · 09/02/2017 11:54

Only cheating themselves if they are.

Huldra · 09/02/2017 11:55

Green

Restless legs? Sleep walking??

Everyone on my Workweek Hustle are between 30,000 and 70,000 so far.

Eragonsegg · 09/02/2017 11:56

I managed to reach my target cleaning my teeth last week!

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 09/02/2017 11:59

I WANT to call her on it but I'll look petty and vindictive

No you won't, just politely mention that she might want to check her settings because apparently she's walked 12 km since last night and the equivalent of London to Southhampton (115km)! since Saturday.

MaidOfStars · 09/02/2017 11:59

Ach well, she's cheating herself.

Don't join challenges with her and maybe say why.

I've called bullshit on someone's daily steps before. Then never joined in with them since.

badhotfanny · 09/02/2017 12:05

I am suspicious of some of the people in challenge groups I am on. One person did 350,000 steps last week but shares NO information with the app, so I don't even know what sports they say they do.

50k steps per day, every day just doesn't sound plausible to me. Maybe I'm just jealous! Grin

parrots · 09/02/2017 12:14

Never mind steps, I'd like to compete against fitness scores!

raviolidreaming · 09/02/2017 12:18

Agreed.

FearTheLiving · 09/02/2017 12:24

Is she a nurse? My friend is a nurse and easily does 80,000 + on a shift.

I average at around 7000 as I'm at college and spend most of my day sat down. Yesterday I did 124 Grin

I discovered that I can do 10,000 just sitting watching telly and crocheting
I was going to suggest knitting!

Your friend walks over 60km on a shift? Are you sure? That is a big ward!
