with whom Australian soldiers have fought side by side for 100 years.

It could be argued that it's not Britain but Australia that has the 'special relationship'. The UK didn't send troops to Vietnam.

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 22:03

Are there any techy/social media whizzes around to comment on it

Imagine the Daily Mail comments section - who is commenting? Are they being genuine?

I have no doubt that comments on articles are often 'infiltrated' from outside. Along with the ability to delete tweets and comments, you can present an image and have people read comments like yours..so you belong.

The internet is a fascinating place. It's open to exploitation.

Are there any folk on the thread knowledgable about US law and the upcoming appeal?

titsmcgee22 · 06/02/2017 22:03

maybe Lurker & Claig could meet up & breed little clurkers?
Oh well, thanks for the thread, guys. Flowers Chocolate Wine

Just listening to the candidate for French Prez moan that he's been treated "violently." If he can't take a media storm, I'm not really sure Francois is up for dealing with other international heavyweights.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 22:04

Lingle, I've posted a couple links to articles outlining what should be happening next with the appeal. If you check back a few pages, it should be there.

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 22:05

The UK didn't send troops to Vietnam

I know - can you imagine the social media reaction then?

I agree lingle it's like being in a really gorgeous bit of America in here, and the links have been beautiful. Thanks ginger

The last big power nutter I remember comparable to this one was Boris Yeltsin, Russian president in the 90s I think. Once got so pissed on plane over to Ireland was unable to get off it, used to do Elvis impersonations at diplomatic events.

Devon!

(Posted before I know but that video still makes me chortle.)

This is starring to sound like a school yard dispute over friends, when everyone should be telling King Trump to get real.
Something like: we're just not that into you.
The US has acted for too long as the centre for a large number of countries. Perhaps the UN can become more relevant now, I wonder.

Pence has obviously been on "damage control duty" all weekend.

Interesting watching Confessions of the Paparazzi, how the paps basically make up news. ( tho think we already knew this...)

lingle · 06/02/2017 22:10

"Ten former U.S. national security and foreign policy officials, who served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, filed a declaration in the court case arguing the travel ban serves no national security purposes.

It was signed by former secretaries of state including John Kerry, Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and former CIA directors Michael Hayden and Michael Morell."

Condoleezza Rice too.

Destinysdaughter · 06/02/2017 22:12

The link I posted upthread about the guy who runs a fake news site, he actually ran a story about protesters being paid!

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 22:14

The last big power nutter I remember comparable to this one was Boris Yeltsin

Shows age now.

I remember the 80s. Reagan and Thatcher - God knows what she would have been like on Twitter. We had the wall and we had Russia. We knew our enemy.

I remember Gorbachov. The wall coming down. Discussions on ICBMs.

Things seemed ok. Europe opening up.

Then Iraq and Kuwait. The Gulf War 1

Blair - I felt so optimistic when he came along.

There was issues with Russia but that didn't seem to affect us. There was terrorism but that seemed a long way away.

9/11 - those pictures. Then the war on terrorism. You're with us or against us.

Iraq and Afghanistan - so easy we were told. We're making the UK safer.

The rise in Islamophobia. The rise in 'othering'. Global recession and the worldwide downturn.

ISIS. Syrian war and refugees pouring in.

Brexit and Trump.

You know, when you write it down, it's depressing. You can almost see the chapters being written in future history books.

Anyone with any historical knowledge would know that no one has succeeded in invading Afghanistan - even the Victorians tried and failed 🤔

Badders123 · 06/02/2017 22:20

Spartacus -
Thing is, yeltsin was an alchoholic and iirc this was well known
Not sure how much power he was "allowed" by the kremlin
I remember the 80s too (old gimmer alert)
Reagan being voted in was a shock
Thatcher cosying up to him was nauseating
His war on drugs - the effects of which are still being felt now - his totally mad wife and her love of horoscopes
BUT he did listen to his staff - he wasn't a narcissist like trump
I feel as worried now as I did as a teen in the 80s

woman12345 · 06/02/2017 22:22

Another old gimmer here.
Nobody I knew seemed surprised at Reagan being voted in.
We knew very little about Thatcher that didn't come straight from MSM, and everything I heard (that I recall) was very positive about her and that the UK loved her. (I heard a slightly different side of it when I moved to the UK Grin)
Yes, his wife fought against homosexuality (until her daughter came out) and stem cell research (until her husband got Alzheimers). Was remembering all this recently when I saw a meme about it. She was not a hugely popular woman, at least to my knowledge.

I am much more worried now than when Reagan was in.
