It's the boy who cried wolf isn't it. You get caught out in telling lies, it's hard to regain that trust.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 20:34

toomany oh, I misunderstood - I thought you were asking because you wanted to share stuff you'd seen on FB. I don't generally share stuff on FB, as I have a lot of friends and relatives in the states (I'm American) that voted for/support Trump, and I don't want to get into political arguments with any of them. I respect their space, they (generally) respect mine. I've had to unfollow a few and unfriend a couple that were very aggressive, even after I stated that I did not want to discuss it with them. So no, I don't post stuff on my FB.

DumbledoresApprentice · 06/02/2017 20:36

I really enjoy these threads and appreciate all of you posting stuff. Keep up the good work guys!

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 20:36

ami I've seen that picture a lot today - I think I saw two that prefaced it with "an unfortunately timed photograph" or some such statement. Fair enough. I'm not horribly familiar with her and her views. I've heard some wide ranging comments on her, but haven't done enough reading yet.

I don't trust anything unless I see it with my own eyes. But even then, our eyes only see a bit of it and fills in the rest.

GingerIvy, I like that you post select material from your Twitter feed.

I'm not on Twitter myself, and have no desire to wade through the sheer volume of material on there.

Justanotherlurker, if there's material you think should be on this thread, please just post it instead of whining that other people haven't.

Though where you get the notion that MN is required to provide balanced views I have no idea. Sounds to me like the sort of argument you might use successfully to tie the BBC or an official body in knots, to derail something.

I'm finding these threads very useful for concentrating certain types of information and analysis. If I want something else, I go somewhere else.

cozietoesie · 06/02/2017 20:40

I've always appreciated your feed copies, Ginger. Keep at it - if only for me. Smile

Justanotherlurker · 06/02/2017 20:42

Impressed with Bercow.

Fucking LOL, sort your bias out...

In 2012, the Amir of Kuwait came to the UK on a state visit. He was given the "earned honour" of addressing parliament. Bercow said:

'Your Highness it is my privilege to welcome you here to our Parliament for this important stage of your state visit.'

Human Rights Watch has the following to say about Kuwait in its World Report 2017:

'Kuwait has no laws prohibiting domestic violence or marital rape',
'Article 153 of the Kuwaiti penal code stipulates that a man who finds his mother, wife, sister or daughter in the act of adultery and kills them is punished by either a small fine or no more than three years in prison',
'Adultery and extramarital intercourse are criminalized, and same-sex relations between men are punishable by up to seven years in prison. Transgender people can be arrested under a 2007 penal code provision that prohibits “imitating the opposite sex in any way.”'

'Kuwait joined the Saudi-led coalition that began attacking Houthi and allied forces in Yemen on March 26, 2015. Human Rights Watch documented 58 unlawful coalition airstrikes in Yemen, some of which may amount to war crimes, that killed nearly 800 civilians and repeatedly hit markets, schools and hospitals'

Israelis are banned from travelling to Kuwait
.
I am not interested in making apologies for Trump, but let's hold our parliamentarians to some standard of consistency.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 20:42

Pausing Thanks. I did ask a few times in the first few threads if people wanted me to continue posting stuff and was told numerous times yes, so I have. I post sources so people know where it's coming from (taking the time to add their "bio" info into the tweet so it's clear). I try to stick to MSM and reliable stuff for news, but happily post anything amusing, just to break up the news a bit here and there.

Ok - I'll give you one. Bercow has said Trump is not welcome to speak. But there have been plenty of other Heads of State who have spoken. They come from countries which have poor human rights records.

Is it hypocritical that Bercow said they were ok?

Or - is it ok because the USA is our closest ally and we are sending a strong message to him that allies shouldn't behave like that?

That's a good point - it's similar to one made about the petition. Personally, I think we hold the USA to standards we expect from ourselves. There are many countries in the world we have to work with who have appalling human rights records - but I never expected the USA to have a President who tweets about judges like that and who has such an open attitude towards people who are different.

I think it sends a message that the USA should do better. It's a modern democracy and it is supposed to be a beacon of freedom. Sadly, it's in very poor company right now.

Virtually all Democrats poised to vote against remaining Trump Cabinet picks

This is an important one. Hopefully they can get a couple GOP to vote no. Stories have been all over that she (and her family) have paid lots of money to various people to get this. She is entirely unsuitable. (even without the guns in schools to protect against grizzlies Grin)

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 20:55

I think that is a fair point lurker and from now on we should be expecting Bercow and other MPs to stand up more to such potential visitors. I rather suspect that in this case he is responding to public pressure and the views of MPs rather then just basing it on his principles, which as you say have been somewhat lacking in past occasions. All the same, I'm glad he has said it.

On ginger's tweeting there have been a lot of people on past threads saying they appreciate her putting up tweets and one of the things that we all do on this thread is link to interesting articles people may wish to read. If you aren't interested you don't have to read them, but I don't think we should stop something lots of people like just because one person gets shitty about it.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 20:57

I agree that Bercow's statement leaves him a hostage to fortune. It's likely that there will be future state visits from undesirables, because that is the way the world works. If some kind of standard is set now, what happens the next time?

It's not as though Trump is going to get a normal state visit anyway or as though anyone thought he should speak in parliament.

It would be a bun fight and I don't think Trump will be allowed near a microphone anywhere incase he says something stupid.

Trump is perfectly capable of digging his own holes.

Roussette · 06/02/2017 20:57

2 of the GOP are voting no. It is tied. Which means Pence has the decider. She is so so unpopular. Rightly so

I wish we could stand up to Saudi - but I am sure people have seen the reaction of our MPs when Saudi is mentioned.

Maybe this could be a sea change? I doubt it -the UK is for sale, no principles attached.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 20:58

But the bears ginger! Everyone knows central LA is overrun by bears all attacking schools and trying to eat children! Do you expect them to fight them off with staplers?

amispartacus · 06/02/2017 21:01

Oh - and I watch the press briefings from the White House. I love how Sean Spicer always starts off with how amazing Trump is and the positive press.
However, he lost ALL credibility when the crowd size was discussed. I have seen Obama's and Trump's inaugaration and the crowd was far bigger for Obamas. The White House reaction meant that I struggled to take him seriously.

Just to remind you though:

Has anyone noticed the classical music intro there? I'm reminded of Sir Humphrey arranging Jim Hacker's first televised address. Wink

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:04

Bigly Clearly you were unaware that in the states, teachers are all required to take "Defence against Grizzlies" (known commonly as DAG) which includes use of staplers as a defence weapon. Obviously it recommends a full size stapler, not those weenie little mini-staplers you get at the dollar store. Hmm

So clearly, guns in the classroom to protect against grizzlies is utterly unnecessary. Grin
