Or - is it ok because the USA is our closest ally and we are sending a strong message to him that allies shouldn't behave like that?

Well we are into a situation that most of the anti trump supporters rubbish the idea of us being there closest allie.

If you disregard that then we get into the argument that "us" thinking we have any kind of "soft power" as "little Englander" does a full 180 degrees on why the Brexit vote is wrong, there is a very large overlap on these threads alone bemoaning our "imperialistic" past, that we should now somehow use..

You tell me....

BestIsWest · 06/02/2017 21:05

Beautiful.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:05

ami I was absolutely crying laughing at that.

Dunlurking · 06/02/2017 21:07

Bigly boast - I have read ALL the threads might have missed a few pages of thread 3 and ALL the links. The Best AIBU threads ever!

Really, thank you for the posts and links. No need for swearing on this thread, or picking on one of the most informative posters Lurker. Smacks of bullying - were you trying to emulate DT?

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:07

ami I've seen a couple articles about his reaction to that skit, by the way. A couple said he was all upset, saying it was mean. I posted one earlier that was more middle of the line - he said it was a bit mean, but overall thought it was funny. So he clearly has a fairly good sense of humour in that regard.

BiglyBadgers · 06/02/2017 21:09

Phew ginger you have set my mind at rest. Grin

HamletsSister · 06/02/2017 21:09

Regarding the notion of holding the US to a different set of standards to, for example, Kuwait. Partly, I think this is because they frequently term the President, "The Leader of the Free World" or trumpet their democratic credentials. Whereas places like Kuwait and Saudi make no such claims.

It may also be that "the West" is held to different standards from "the rest".

Netanyahu’s hysterical rhetoric on Iran seeks to divert attention from West Bank settlement building

This all seems a bit convoluted between the May visit and the Trump visit. Trump's team saying they're moving things, May seems to be holding back. I wonder if Trump manages to ignite things where May will land on this.

We are the closest ally of the USA. People may not like it but we are. We trade with them, share a lot of their culture, work closely in defence and what happens in the US affects us.

I am also concerned because the politics of the USA is here as well - and I am especially concerned over the attitude towards minority groups and the 'othering' of them. We have that here and I do not want that to get worse.

When Trump did his 'Australia' tweet last week, that really surprised me. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK - we are very similar nations - and the language helps. I was surprised with his behaviour - and I bet it concerned many Australians as well.

American politics is disappointing at the moment - I expect better.

Wasn't Kushner going to bring peace to the middle East? Where is he these days, I haven't heard about him for ages.

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:13

I do wish they'd drop this whole "leader of the free world" thing. I have visions (and they're not pretty) of Trump standing on the railings at the front of the Titanic shouting "I'm King of the World!!" Hmm

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 21:13

I certainly get the impression that the Americans on this thread expect their country to hold itself to higher standards of democracy and civil liberty than Kuwait or Saudi Arabia!

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:14

Rumours in various articles have stated that Kushner is off socialising and with his family a lot as they "settle in to DC life." The phrase "leaving a vacuum for Bannon to step into" has been used a lot.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 21:14

Of course Trump seems to think it's all much of a muchness and you might as well live in Russia.

It sounds like he needs to go to the Head Teacher for a reprimand.

I'm all for balance on these sorts of threads Lurker, and would like to feel more positively about the future (as I think many would) - but that means offering explanations when you think something is incorrect or incorrectly interpreted. Not shouting at people for posting things they've read or seen. Might as well just shout snowflakes and have done with it Confused

The speech.

Does anyone else think that there are one or two passages written for him by a speech writer, reasonably articulate with a few decent rhetorical devices? And then he adds his own ramblings and flourishes. It must infuriate the writers.

lingle · 06/02/2017 21:17

I am finding the thread very helpful in its current form but would welcome corrections/critiques.

The more the merrier.

I can correct the Ivana shoe copyright thing if anyone cares (but I don't think it is important).

GingerIvy · 06/02/2017 21:17

ami I'll be honest, I don't think a lot of Americans think that much about "who is our closest ally?" There's a lot of patriotism and "we're #1" and the old chestnut "if we hadn't joined into WW2 you'd all be speaking German now" floating about in many circles. I think there are quite a few Americans that think they can do it alone - which is why the whole "build a wall" and "roll up the red carpet" thing isn't alarming some. It's certainly the thought processes I've seen in some. When the fighting comes to the US, it's rare. They tend to be in a bit of a bubble. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 were huge shocks because of that.

merrymouse · 06/02/2017 21:17

The Kushner Trumps also theoretically practice Shabbat from Friday to Saturday.

Bannon looks as though he sleeps at his desk.

cozietoesie · 06/02/2017 21:18

I would very much hope to be able to discuss that very point with you, Lurker, in 6 months. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to but..............Wink

Indeed.

Hamlets Every time you see him reading from notes, his speeches sound fairly logical. The moment he abandons the notes, it seems to go right back to his familiar patterns of complaint and justify, accuse and bemoan. Yes, he must drive them mad.
