Group wants to ban feminist books from a women's library - WTF?

Bambambini · 05/02/2017 17:54

Who on earth would want to ban feminist books from a Women's Library? Hope that the Vancouver Women's Library stands firm and doesn't bow to this women hating group. Hope the library get's lots if support - this attempt to bully and censor seems to be becoming much more common, unfortunately.

pilly - you've been socialised to be nice, be kind, that's what gender is, social conditioning. Gender is a hierarchy and females are deemed far lower than males.

pilly - if I blacked up and demanded to be included, centred, in the the black rights movement because I felt black would that be okay or would you think I was a racist asshat?

pillypollypandy · 05/02/2017 20:47

@Itsallgoingtobefine
A woman is someone who self identifies as a woman.

VirgilsStaff · 05/02/2017 20:47

Pilly it begoves young feminists to listen to & learn from older women. Because many older women put their lives on the line for your freedoms now. If they had not done what they did, you would not have the freedoms now that allow you to maintain that you include, not exclude.

But my advice is, wait until you have your first job. See how you're treated compared with the man sitting next to you. Then after you have your first child. See how you're paid then. See what kinds of choices you have then.

Then wait until you're an old woman ...

Plus no one is saying that transwomen shouldn't have rights, they just don't get to take mine and my daughters away.

PencilsInSpace · 05/02/2017 20:48

transwomen are women

Can you explain what definition of 'women' you are using here please?

'cis' isn't a derogatory term at all, it simply refers to the people who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth.

At birth it was noted that I had female genitalia and therefore there was well over 99% chance I was genetically female. The gender which is imposed on female people is a set of roles, assumptions and prejudices which position us at the bottom of the hierarchy, so that male people can exploit our physical, sexual, emotional and reproductive labour.

I don't 'identify' with that and I don't know any other woman who does so of course it's derogatory. There are some fascinating PoMo definitions of gender as some sort of internal 'essence' of 'feeling like' a woman or a man or one of many other inbetween or other things. Those definitions have only been around since the 80's and I don't think they're useful, in fact I think they're regressive.

I'm a teenager and I manage to understand it

OK. As you get older and experience more of how the world treats you, you might find your opinions change. Nobody out there in the real world will care how you 'identify' really, you'll just be 'identified' by others as male or female and treated accordingly. Sorry to burst your bubble.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2017 20:48

A woman is someone who self identifies as a woman

Ok. And what would make a someone self identify as woman? Can I self-identify as a man, and be accepted as a man?

pillypollypandy · 05/02/2017 20:48

I have decided to leave this thread because it's call the midwife soon and I have some writing to do. Hope you enjoy the conversation further. Goodbye all, it was interesting hearing your views.

pillypollypandy · 05/02/2017 20:49

@VirgilsStaff
I have my first job. I'm a writer and broadcaster.

DameDeDoubtance · 05/02/2017 20:49

pilly - what are they identifying with? I am am adult human female, that's the only thing that makes me a woman, everything else is my personality.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2017 20:50

Please do come back Pilly, it has been interesting talking to you Smile

venusinscorpio · 05/02/2017 20:50

What about the idea that lesbians might want only to sleep with women and not transwomen because they don't find male bodies attractive? How do you feel about that as a queer person? Are they terrible exclusionary bigots?

DameDeDoubtance · 05/02/2017 20:51

So trans black bad, trans woman fine, but no idea why eh. Just think about it pilly.

VirgilsStaff · 05/02/2017 20:51

Yes, DamedeDoubtance I was wondering about a passionate defence of Rachel Dolezal. She was a passionate advocate & worker for people of colour. But apparently she is not black - it's OK to be transsexual, but not transrace.

And if you're transexual, you're allowed to attack women. Even though you claim you are one yourself.

pillypollypandy · 05/02/2017 20:51

@venusinscorpio
As a woman I don't think that is transphobic because attraction is a very fluid thing and it's something you can't impose rules on. You can't force someone to be attracted to someone, or date them. I'm open to the concept of dating a transgender woman, but accept it would be unlikely because I may not find them attractive.

Now I really have to go!!! CTM in 10 minutes!

pillypollypandy · 05/02/2017 20:52

Should read *as a lesbian, sorryy

venusinscorpio · 05/02/2017 20:52

You do realise that's considered a transphobic view by many?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/02/2017 20:52

Pilly, is Rachel Moran an awful person then?
If you don't know who she is I would suggest, in the nicest possible way, that you read her book, Paid For - it is very cheap on Kindle.
I say this because IME most of the people who use the term SWERF don't actually know an awful lot about the reality of prostitution and have fallen for the propaganda of the pimp lobby that suggests anyone not in favour of legalisation does so because they have something against women in prostitution, rather than the people who exploit them. It is a good idea to be well informed if you are going to weigh in on this.

MrsDustyBusty · 05/02/2017 20:55

Why would a writer and broadcaster want different views? I'm fairness, if she thought the same as usual she'd be out of a job.

Interesting to want to watch call the midwife which is transphobia, suggesting as it does that only so-called "women" give birth.

PencilsInSpace · 05/02/2017 20:56

A woman is someone who self identifies as a woman

A plibble is someone who self identifies as a plibble.

What sort of meaningless shit is this?

Bambambini · 05/02/2017 20:57

Virgil -
I'm not sure who is behind it as it's very new and just getting talked about. It's women hating stuff anyway and yes shocking - especially if that report on activists being violent and intimidating at the library are true. Hopefully some media types are aware and following it.

Call the midspouse,surely?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2017 20:59

Pilly I think you've missed CTM - it's on right now - Apple Tree Yard is on at 2100...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/02/2017 20:59

Surely Call The Midwife was at 8?

MrsDustyBusty · 05/02/2017 21:01

Must be the special non transphobic edit where people who feel like women give birth regardless of their unmentionable areas.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/02/2017 21:01

Hopefully some media types are aware and following

The thing is it's all very niche. Remember the furore about Bindel speaking at the Working Class Movement Library - it was all over Twitter and FB and in the end 4 (four) protestors turned up.
