To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.

Albus Dumbledore

Least said soonest mended and A still tongue makes a wise head.

My Grandad and everyone else's probably

If you open your mind too much, your brain will fall out.

'To thine own self, be true' always lived but wish I could've always believed it!

Never let your memories be greater than your dreams.

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
Calm seas do not great sailors make.
We need a bigger boat.
Trust but verify.
Speak softly but carry a big stick.
Never complain, never explain.
Success is the sum of small things done correctly.

FartnissEverbeans · 06/02/2017 10:47

"Blessed are those who see beautiful things in humble places where others see nothing." - Camille Pissaro

"Will it make the boat go faster?" A friend read the autobiography of a competitive sailor (no idea what his name is, sorry) and in it he says his whole life revolves around that question. I work in a school and I find this quote useful for maintaining focus on what matters - kids' learning - and cutting down on all the superfluous stuff.

CaraAspen · 06/02/2017 11:04

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us..."

Marcipex · 06/02/2017 16:12

But it is no use wishing, as Oswald said.

Be nice to those on your way up, as. There's a good chance you'll meet the again on your way back down.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/02/2017 16:25

Never regret anything. After all. It was once exactly what you wanted.

You can take a horse to water but. You can't make him drink it

"Practice will never betray you" Kōhei Uchimura Japanese 7 Olympic medal winning Gymnast.

I tell this to my DC when they feel like guitar practice, spelling homework, times tables etc is a slog. I find his dedication and hard work inspirational.

Loving so many of these

A humorous one from me:

By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and sighing.
And he vows his passion is,
Infinite, undying-
Lady make a note of this-
One of you is lying! Wink

What's for you WILL GO by you if you don't pay attention and grab it on the way past .

I made that one up in response to the one I hate

phoenix1973 · 06/02/2017 21:13

Mainly sea ones:
An empty vessel makes the most noise. (Generally, the loud gobshites are waffling shite and quieter ones are more interesting).
A calm sea does not make a skilled mariner.
Accept that some days you are the pigeon and other days you are the statue.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

alltouchedout · 06/02/2017 21:13

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?

It is never too late to be who you might have been.

phoenix1973 · 06/02/2017 21:16

Better to be thought stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.😂
God gave you 2 ears and 1 mouth. Use them in proportion. 🤣🤣🤣🤣I say that to my DD when she's back chatting.....

' If a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever.' - the Dalai Lama.

I have this one tucked into a clear window pocket in my purse. It is that important to me.

Summerisdone · 06/02/2017 22:06

"If someone is too perfect they won't look good. Imperfection is important."
Cantona

"A wise girl kisses but doesn't love, listens but doesn't believe and leaves before she is left."
Marilyn Monroe

I grew up idolising both of these people but when I was very small I didn't quite understand either quote, however at some point as a teenager I finally got them and they have always stuck with me
