One of mine is: "The role of logic as a motivation for human behaviour is largely ornamental." G. K. Chesterton, I think

Horopu · 05/02/2017 01:08

We are what we do repeatedly. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 05/02/2017 01:08

Don't worry about making a fool of yourself
Those who care don't matter
Those who matter don't care

And

With a cup of tea in you hand, anything is possible (Keith Allen I think).

And

Why fit in when you were born to stand out (Dr Seuss)

If you think the grass is greener on the other side, it's probably fertilised with bullshit.

"I have never liked you and I always shall"

I wish I could remember where it came from because I love it so. Alas, even the Internet cannot tell me.

(Also adore absolutely anything Dorothy Parker ever said!)

Agerbilatemycardigan · 05/02/2017 01:35

"The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence"

Charles Bukowski

melj1213 · 05/02/2017 01:37

I have a couple - both from Harry Potter, both said by Dumbledore (though I have many many more "favoourites" these are my top two) - the first one is the first time I was ever able to put into words how my mental illness felt - I have always struggled with my anxiety and depression, ever since I was young, and it was always so hard because so many people don't understand it and see it as just "all in your head" ... and this quote made me cry because I finally could put into words - and such simple and impactful ones at that - that just because it's in my head doesn't make it any less real to me ...

And the second one is part of a longer quote that I love, but this is the bit I use when I'm trying to make a difficult decision, and I use it as my moral compass - what is right and what is easy are not always the same thing and it is often tempting to take the easy path even if it is not necessarily the right one ...

And the second one

"This too, shall pass."

No idea who said it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/02/2017 01:55

I am who I am because of everyone.
The orange advert.
OMG. That statement makes me cold with goose bumps.

  1. 'A journey of 10,000 miles begins with a single step.' Mao Tze Tung (maybe).
  2. Get your shoes and socks on people, it's right around the corner.' Frank Zappa.
ScarlettFreestone · 05/02/2017 02:09

I saw this the other day and thought it was brilliant but I can't find out who said it:

"Equal rights for others does not mean less rights for you. It's not pie"

GertyTheGert · 05/02/2017 02:16

Dont put off til tomorrow what you can do today - because if you like it today, you can do it again tomorrow!!

lizzieoak · 05/02/2017 02:18

I think "this too shall pass" is from midrash (sort of Jewish folktales, the back stories to what is in Torah). It's about one of the kings, Solomon I think (?), and a run with that engraved on it.

I like Oscar Wilde's "we are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars". The Pretenders used it.

To keep creating, you have to be about change. Miles Davis.

'Life is about doing things, not about having things'.

You are entirely bonkers but I'll tell you a secret all the best people are.

If you are more fortunate than others it's better to build a longer table than a taller fence

Maverickismywingman · 05/02/2017 08:26

"Not my circus, not my monkeys" polish proverb

"Courage doesn't always roar, it can be the quiet voice at the end of the day that says 'maybe I'll try again tomorrow '"

OneMillionScovilles · 05/02/2017 08:46

"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." (Samuel Beckett)

This gets written on my wrist a lot (usually less flamboyantly!) to remind me to be kinder to myself... but keep going.

Everything worth doing is illegal, immoral or fattening.

Everything really worth doing is illegal, immoral and fattening.

It's better to regret something you've done than something you never done.
