We should retain an honours system to enrage the people who really want them and don't get them.
This time it's David Beckham. Every year he doesn't get a knighthood I rejoice. It was also the same with my former boss, whose name you wouldn't recognise. I never used to say that though. For survival's sake I'd say: 'Oh my God! How could they have done that to you? Would you like a tissue? I'll just leave you alone with your grief.'
It used to amuse me that Bruce Forsyth was blackballed year after year. God knows what he did but now I feel a bit rotten and don't begrudge him in the twilight of his years. But if they give Jimmy Tarbuck a K I'm going to the barricades.
Other notables who've been passed over include Paul Dacre and Tony Blair which most people on MN would regard as entirely fair.
It's a tradition that former Prime Ministers get at least a knighthood - John Major was the last one. Baroness Thatcher was the one before him.
But Blair pissed the Queen off at the time of the People's Princess, so he's not going to get one. But it would be too obvious to skip him so no Prime Minister is going to get one any time soon.
I think Tony's making too much money to care and I imagine Gordon would be the kind of person to humbly accept his fate either way. I don't think Dave cares about anything or even knows what day it is.
I bet Theresa would love one though.
