Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

Saying "yes" to an illegal substance the 1st time you are offered carries risks other than the hypothetical one of health problems & death.

It is risky behavior because the drugs are illegal. If you are caught, there will be consequences. Police will be involved, you can have a record, you might lose your job.

minifingerz · 10/02/2017 17:15

"Not sure whether you're being deliberately obtuse, but as we know drugs are illegal and they fund organised crime"

Is that worse than buying Nestle products or using Shell oil? or staying in one of Trump's hotels

perhapsiwill · 10/02/2017 17:16

Risk doesn't have to refer to risk of death.

Oh, you just said that

It's a good point minifingerz, but just like I wouldn't brag about staying in a Trump hotel (which I haven't by the way) I also don't brag about/get nostalgic about the drugs I used to do in my youth as I am now well aware of the consequences of organised crime. At the time I wasn't....and probably wouldn't have cared too much anyway as I was having fun.

Dulcimena · 10/02/2017 18:34

Oh it's all getting a bit heavy again!

This isn't old but it is really good, imo, anyway

Strongmummy · 10/02/2017 19:05

Love it Dulcimena. I saw 4 hero live once. Amazing. Live drumming to dnb - incredible

bummymummy77 · 10/02/2017 20:03

Love 4 Hero. Did anyone see Goldie's Timeless at the Royal Albert Hall?

Dulcimena · 10/02/2017 21:18

I never saw 4hero or Goldie - but timeless is just awesome and never gets tired. Bet the live drumming was something.

Logical progression, anyone? Grin

DoctorBeat · 10/02/2017 21:32

I took drugs in the late 90s and am now a doctor and mother and the hardest drug I ever do is a glass of Pinot Grigio on a Saturday night. My brother however did the same and took his own life last year. Sadly he never grew out of his substance abuse and had a miserable life plagued with mental illness and caused untold heartache for my dear parents. Sadly drug use can have a legacy that is not very pleasant.

Bedsheets4knickers · 10/02/2017 23:12

I'm here too also wonder the same

bummymummy77 · 11/02/2017 02:23

I used to run with the jungle/ drum and bass crowd. Having a bit of a throw back evening tonight much to dh and ds's disgust. Grin

bummymummy77 · 11/02/2017 02:24

Bukem is a miserable sod. Grin

Dulcimena · 11/02/2017 07:05

Lol! Maybe! But that album was so good.

Last night we I had a kitchen disco here too, dh was totally bemused. I found a dougall mix from dreamscape nye '93 that I used to have on cassette Grin

I have bonkers news!! I drove past a sign yesterday advertising BRANDON BLOCK doing in my local deadbeat dodgy nightclub!!!!
Brandon Block!!!!
Or Frandon Flock as I remember him, something to do with a blow job?!

bummymummy77 · 11/02/2017 14:12

Regretting our party last night now. Sad

Christ and I was only on the Chardonnay.

snapcrap · 11/02/2017 14:36

Brandon Block was on Celebrity Big Brother a couple of weeks ago so not terribly mad!

I was also a 90s raver but this thread is bemusing. Why would anyone think those people who were doing Es back then have all gone to ground or disappeared and why does anyone care what anyone did in their youth?!

I tell people I took shitloads of drugs if it's relevant and if it comes up, couldn't care less what their view is but not one person, whether they indulged or not, has been terribly interested or horrified.

As for 'don't tell your mummy friends' WTF? 'Mummy friends' are just other people.

Weird.

CoteDAzur · 11/02/2017 14:37

I was out on wine last night, too. Normally lovely people got aggressive as the night went on. There was shouting and some people were upset.

Never had anything but people being lovely to each other back when we were on happier stuff. Sigh.

Umm, I can't tell if you are joking, you can't really believe that can you ? ShockShockShock

Strongmummy · 11/02/2017 15:47

Is brandon block bankrupt or something?

bummymummy77 · 11/02/2017 18:11

If I get two day hangovers from a bottle of wine Christ knows how I'd feel after a night of e's or coke. The thought of it actually makes me go cold lol!

CoteDAzur · 11/02/2017 19:39

That's one of the good things about it: You don't get a hangover the next day. At all.

psychoactive · 11/02/2017 19:42

I like the afterglow it lasts for a few days 😊 (MDMA)

Strongmummy · 11/02/2017 19:42

Erm coke is horrific the next day!!!
