Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

This thread is going on longer than an unlicensed party in a unused train tunnel...

CoteDAzur · 09/02/2017 13:58

That reminds me of a man who once rented his boat for a party. He thought we would sail together the next day. He calls me up at 10:30 AM, saying "The party is still continuing! They are still dancing! How can they still be dancing?!?"

I knew how Grin

perhapsiwill · 09/02/2017 14:42

Grincote.
I think it was cote who kept it going. Well done on challenging all the pearl clutchers so articulately.

Yeah I've really enjoyed this thread, thanks for all the links.

Does anyone remember the Pet Shop Boys covering the morning show on Radio 1 in 1991? They had 20 minute guest mixes all week, it was amazing - proper rave music on radio 1! Shock Some awesome human has uploaded them here: soundcloud.com/jamiedmusic/sasha-pet-shop-boys-radio1-aug

I get where the anti drugs people are coming from though, I've lost two cousins to illegal drug overdoses. In the same way I've known people to break their necks, backs and other awful injuries from horse riding accidents and I'm just aware that's a real inherent risk but it doesn't put me off owning and riding horses. One of my running friends died last year (brugada syndrome or hocm, something like that) and I've participated in races where people have collapsed. Then I've known people whose lives have been altered dramatically in split second random events or accidents while going about perfectly safe seeming activities.

I've completely forgotten if there was a point I was reaching for there Hmm

psychoactive · 09/02/2017 14:56

I think the point is that safety is a complete illusion and quite a dangerous one in itself if it keeps you from experiencing life more fully.

psychoactive · 09/02/2017 14:56

(I have actually fried my brain, sorry)

Dulcimena · 09/02/2017 14:58

lol psycho Grin

I get what you're saying!

psychoactive · 09/02/2017 15:02

I've been a terrible influence on my children though

Did anyone here used to go out in Edinburgh in the late 90's? Spice of Life, Sublime, Subtle Logic?

CoteDAzur · 09/02/2017 16:16

I have indeed taken one for the team. And been very calm & patient Halo

My personal favorite was the aggressive, foul-mouthed person who called me various names including "horrible cow" over a 12-hour period asking me to apologize Grin

bummymummy77 · 09/02/2017 17:52

You were pretty nasty Cote.

bummymummy77 · 09/02/2017 17:54

And I'm far from a pearl clutcher. You could have got your point across without being as spiteful and completely unfeeling as you were. No need to be so unkind. It's the first time I've ever flipped out at anyone on mumsnet and there were others in agreement that you were being pretty nasty.

LolDeLol · 09/02/2017 18:19

So do the posters who have enjoyed drugs not care at all about the victims of organised crime and the drug trade or do they not think they exist?

Or do they care only a little bit but not enough to outweigh the fun of taking drugs?

Genuine question.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/02/2017 18:21

Don't do drugs now but wa las bang on it back in the day. I didnt care enough about implications of the drugs to stop doing it.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/02/2017 18:21

*but was

Chickenkatsu · 09/02/2017 18:26

Do people who use cars for short journeys care about all the damage that the oil companies do?

Most drug deals are just that, deals. Obviously it will be better when they're re-legalised.

LolDeLol · 09/02/2017 18:28

Fair play for being honest about it.

Well...as a teenager enjoying a misspent youth this wasn't even close to being on my radar. Not sure what your point is tbh, the thread is referring to what people were doing 30 years ago. Did you know about the links between org crime and drugs back then? Genuine question.

Strongmummy · 09/02/2017 18:50

I agree, I didn't think about consequence back then. What teenager does!? However, being older and wiser does make a difference, hence why being nostalgic about my past really doesn't sit comfortably with me.

YellowCrocus · 09/02/2017 18:52

I can say with certainty that those people are all still here. Teachers, doctors, scientists, lawyers etc.

LolDeLol · 09/02/2017 18:53

Dulcimena

Yes I was aware of them. Not completely but to some extent. I lived somewhere where there was a lot of drug use and drug users and had grown up around them. I had family members involved in the drug trade.

perhapsiwill · 09/02/2017 18:53

Loldelol
In my work I have supported victims of DV, I have housed the homeless and I have advocated for vulnerable people facing injustice. I have marched for equal rights for women, against fascists, gone on peace rally's, I don't eat meat because it is destroying the planet and because it is cruel, I don't buy clothes from shops where I am knowingly supporting slave labour etc etc. Forgive me if when I was in my 20s I took drugs and that at the time I didn't think about the victims of crime, I don't know if I even knew about it, it was 20 years ago.

OP posts:
Dulcimena · 09/02/2017 18:55

Ah well there's the difference then. I didn't have any drug dealers in my family.
