Many, many people took recreational drugs in the 90s. Where are they now?

I'm not a drug addict and none of my friends were at the time, we just took Es at the weekend, sometimes other drugs. We all went to work or college, seemed like everyone else did this too. We had a great time, weekends were for dancing and hugging, I didn't get on with drunk people and one night stands and it suited me much better.
I moved away from where I grew up, nice area to another nice area.
When I mention partying in my youth to other mums where I live now, they look at me as if I'm an addict who needs help Confused.
Are they all pretending? There were thousands of us doing this so where are they now? And why do people who never took drugs appear to feel so morally superior? One of the women where I live openly talks about cheating the system financially yet looks at me like I'm scum because I went out and had fun 20 years ago. (And probably once a year now!) I feel that because I mentioned this one evening in a pub I have alienated myself from the local mums.

I've tried my fair share of drugs in the past but would never tell the friends I've made since having dd. I don't get the impression that they've ever tried a cigarette never mind popped a few pills and the rest

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 19:39

"The tax you pay on your chocolate goes towards our society. So yes, it does help!"

Why didn't you say that's what you wanted?

If ever I do an E again, I'll give you 20% of whatever it costs, if that will get you to leave peaople in peace to have a bit of fun.

What does it cost these days? 5 quid? I promise you 1 pound if I ever take an E.

Now that everyone's happy, we can go back to talking about the good old days Smile

Twittery · 06/02/2017 19:55

That's a nice idea Cote. £1 for the tax man and, remind me, who gets the other £4? Wink. Oh yes those lovely drug dealers, I'm sure they will use the money wisely. Confused

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 20:10

You lot are making me consider leaving a will in favor of whoever can prove he's a drug dealer.

I've known a few and they were far better company than you pearlclutching killjoys Smile

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 06/02/2017 20:22

I think the comparison between drugs and abortion is perfect.

Bodily autonomy prevails always.
As long as nobody is forcing you into either, it's entirely your choice what you do with your body.

If you don't agree with Abortion then don't have one- but understand that other people do.
If you agree with drugs then don't take them, but understand that other people will.

Also, before 1967, people were profiting from backstreet Abortions, a procedure which was done under sub-optimal conditions, unregulated, and many women died. In countries where it is still illegal, women are still dying unnecessarily.

Without regulation of the drug trade, the potential for both exploitation and batch contamination, is far higher.

It's a valid comparison in my opinion.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 06/02/2017 20:31

I don't think it's fair to call anyone who raises a concern about drugs a 'pearl clutches' . Yes a lot of us had fun and came of luckily scot free

But a friend told me this weekend that the generation on e users will have a propensity to arthritis. he used to be a raver his GP told him !

Twittery · 06/02/2017 20:39

You get me wrong Cote. I'm no pearl clutcher, in fact I want everyone to have fun including the victims of organized crime. Although I understand that doesn't bother you.

GimmeeMoore · 06/02/2017 20:55

I spent late 90s and early 00s at uni, studying and working.never taken any drugs
I did once have some mad dug, does that count
Never fancied any loss of control, and too scared to try illicit substances

LilQueenie · 06/02/2017 21:02

Im not reading 29 pages but will say as a parent there is no way in hell I would say oh its ok lots of people survived a few tablets. Leah Betts? I remember that well and Ive see what drugs do. Even 'party drugs' can lead to harder ones.

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 06/02/2017 21:19

LilQueenie
Leah Betts did not die from Ecstasy.
She died of Hyponatremia (water intoxication), not the drug she took.

On misunderstood advice (to drink a pint of water an hour) she doubled her water intake when she took more Ecstasy.
Unfortunately she flooded her body, which caused her salt levels to drop fatally low, and her organs shut down. It was a tragedy, yes- but it was not the drug which took her life.

GimmeeMoore · 06/02/2017 21:23

Unfortunately Ms Betts did not die from ingesting ecstasy, she died of Hyponatremia
Drinking too much water, causing her sodium levels to fall and her brain to swell
utterly tragic

Try visiting Mexico? I hear the drug trade is so much fun there Hmm

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 21:56

"e users will have a propensity to arthritis. he used to be a raver his GP told him"

Oh ffs. My mum has arthritis. She has never never touched even a cigarette, let alone drugs.

If there is any research anywhere that shows that past E users have had arthritis more frequently than a control group of comparable age?

Excess weight and genetic disposition are what affects your arthritis risk.

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 21:58

'I did once have some mad dug, does that count"

What is "mad dug" then? Sounds fun Grin

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 21:59

'I want everyone to have fun including the victims of organized crime'

Um... OK? Smile

OhMrsQ · 06/02/2017 22:05

Here!
I started at 15. Oh, the good old days :) dancing all weekend, making heaps of new friends, existing on chupa chups and fingernails!

'dancing in the fields of life are bouncing people in full flight'

Raves. Love them.

sigh.

GimmeeMoore · 06/02/2017 22:06

Mad dug, alcopop.pretends to originate from a watermelon or artificial fruit

FineLookingHighHorse · 06/02/2017 22:09

Id pay good money for an old style mitsi Grin

Most people my age who were taking drugs in the early 2000s would agree.

I pity the youth of today with their shit plant fertiliser Mcat and legal highs.

OhMrsQ · 06/02/2017 22:10

Wow.
Escape from Samsara. Future sound of London. Cyberdog!
Did anyone here go to Raindance? In the early 90s?

Interesting to read about the anti psychotics. I took aripiprazole and risperidone before I settled on venlafaxine.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/02/2017 22:23

Yes I went to Raindance

Grin < me at about 2am

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 22:24

I will never forget the first time I walked into a Cyberdog shop. I went "WTF! Shock" Grin

The music. The (totally spaced out) sales people. The clothes.

CoteDAzur · 06/02/2017 22:26

Ooh now I got what you mean by 'mitsi'. Good times Grin

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 06/02/2017 22:27

Did anyone here go to Raindance? In the early 90s?

I was maybe 5 years after you in the mid 90s MrsQ I started off with Helter Skelter Grin

Raindance have an event next month you know

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 06/02/2017 22:28

Does anyone remember night at clubs where you had to wear purple ? I went to one at Ministry (a club that I was never crazy about)

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 06/02/2017 22:29
